This is really dirty. I do not understand anything he touches. This guy really need studies scales and tuning, and SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kind of playing is this???? This is a SCAM!!!!

The score, I believe for this movement, indicates a tempo of 1/4 note = 620.

@cleguia Why to "research" ? It is not some "thesis", but music, that is to be listened to and perceived and not "researched" ... If it sounds disturbing, disharmonic, ugly and makes a bad effect on you, it is more than enough to know ... If you take a food that tastes simply horrible - there is no need to "research" more, right ? :)

@violinoamore Just because a different culture's food "tastes simply horrible" to you because you aren't used to it doesn't mean that others don't find it delicious. This piece is supposed to emulate the sounds of machine guns. Of course it's disturbing--it's supposed to be. Are there ugly sounds? Absolutely. But that's part of the beauty of it. If all music was "pretty", we might as well just turn on an "easy listening" station and stop at that.

@cleguia (Real) music (in most world cultural traditions) was always supposed to be a direct reflection of the highest Universal Harmony ... that can uplift human soul and mind, harmonise it and get in touch with the reality that is beyond us ... What is the point to be exposed to same aggressive scraping ? What good could it bring to a listener ? Bach once said: a music that does not worship God and his glories is just a noise from hell ... This piece and many others are just examples of that

interestingly, this piece is played by hindemith himself much more slowly, and here at youtube, you only see version, where the violists wants to 'show off'.

When violists plays it as fast as they can they are not showing off, look to the composer´s indications at the score!!!!!!

when i first looked at that, i thought, "oh, lots of quarter notes, must be fine." then i saw "quarter note = 600-640." DDDDD=

with all respect because i love the man... hindemith played out of tune all the time. when he heard his own recording he was appalled. it was just a different time

i saw him do this as an encore to bartok last year...and then met him after and he said he almost popped a tendon playing it...beast, he's the only one i've heard bring out the "wild" part of this mvt.
