Just 'cause Thurston & Kim are now separated as spouses, it doesn't necessarily mean SY will break up (although it might).They're continuing with their SY South American tour dates. White Stripes was comprised of an ex-husband & wife. Blondie still tour, although Debbie & Chris split up years ago.
It partly depends on the tone of the split . A bitter split may mean the demise of SY, an amicable one, maybe not.

@freezazoid You're so wrong! SY not just brilliant and loved by millions, but they are such a massive influence on so many bands that might a little more in the limelight. No Sonic Youth=no Nirvana, Radiohead, Placebo, Muse or Pixies. Would you miss any of those? Cos they all love the Youth..

@TheParanoidAndroid1 kurt cobain was a huge music fan. early influences were the beatles. Yes sonic youth was a band kurt liked, but PLEASE, Kurt still would have done nirvana without sonic youth. Same with frank black, same with thom york. And Muse is just an awful band that belongs on broadway btw... they sound like phantom of the opera.
If anything any band that was influenced by sonic youth would possibly be better if S.Y. didn't exist. Don't get me wrong I like SY but don't love SY.
