For some reason, jury duty sounds like it would be really interesting. Maybe I just am a sucker for dramatic stories, but if they are in court for it, hopefully it is pretty good.
My mom was called for jury duty. But when she got there, they were all informed they actually did not have to do it for some reason... so she just sat around for a few hours with strangers. Woooh.
I'm not 18 yet, but my mom has been called for jury duty several time. She never gets picked because her father was a police officer and the defense always thinks there will be a bias. Which is stupid, because usually I'm the one who has to come to the "establishment's" defense when we're arguing.
Well; I'm becoming a lawyer so that's the most efficient way to get out of it cause we just aren't allowed. Or do the Homer Simpson method - claim to be bias against all races!
Also, we get picked for two weeks you have to continue turning up (minimum) so for those who didn't get picked for a trial, it just meant more waiting around until they eventually got picked. It was all a bit rubbish.
I didn't hate it, and at least I can say I did my 'civil duty' but I can't say I enjoyed spending two weeks of my summer break either!
I'm 21 and from the UK and I had to do jury duty this last summer. Things are a little different for us though, you said you could be excused for any reason but only one time - you can only be excused for very important reasons here, and a vacation doesn't count. It's incredibly hard to get excused! Also your first tip, attorneys don't pick from the jury selection, it's a second randomised procedure, though attorneys can protest to you being on jury, but your dress isn't a good enough reason!
I'm 19 and Jury Duty always seemed like a mystical thing that would happen to anyone else but me... now you've made me realize that it could. Thanks for preparing me, at least.
I got called in once a year or two ago. I had to postpone it to my winter break--got picked as alternate juror #2 (sit thru entire trial, but don't get to deliberate). It was an interesting experience. Case was not that fascinating, but the judge was pretty cool. I got paid and experienced many fine eateries downtown San Jose had to offer. :)
I got out of jury twice, I got a postponement because I was at school and then when it was rescheduled it was during the week I had to get surgery so I got a doctors note out of it. But low and behold wouldn't it be my luck then when I finally had to go I actually got picked for a case. It sucked but I got paid for it since I was unemployed at the time. Overall it was an interesting experience though and now I won't get called again for like 3 to 5 years.
Hmm... a high level of adorableness... Well that ought to disqualify him right there, shouldn't it? Just kidding. You're definitely adorable... at the highest level!! ...and somewhat pretty today too - you've been watching those make up tutorials, haven't you.
I'm too young for actual jury duty, but I volunteer in my town's Teen Court program. It's like real court but with teenagers and community service being the only punishment. I'm normally an attorney, but on the cases where I serve on the jury, it's excruciating. There is nothing more mind-numbingly boring than being on the jury. The only way I would ever willingly serve on a jury is if Atticus Finch was one of the attorneys.
I was summoned. I called and said "I'm a full time student" and was immediately removed from the list. Even though it was most definitely summer time.
Due to my autism I have a feeling if I ever get called for jury duty my parents will contact them, explain that I have autism and I'll probably not have to do it. And that's not using my autism as an excuse, I seriously would be useless in a jury.
I was selected for a jury once. It was actually a really interesting case about human smuggling, theft, and extortion. I would have been bored out of my mind if it had been something lame like a DUI. But overall it was a really interesting learning experience.
I was on Grand Jury and I had to serve for 3 months and actually it was pretty cool. I learned a lot about what was going on in the county I lived in and a lot about how different processes work.
Haha. Thanks for the tips! I plan on being very subjective and acting like a know it all.
Giving them excuses doesn't work either because they're very thorough. My aunt tried to get my grandpa excused because he has hearing problems and they had to go to the doctor to get proof. Lame.
I got called for jury duty. The girl on trial was a Paramedic. They asked me what I do for a living and I said "Im a Paramedic" and just like that I was out of jury duty. Everyone there thought I was lying but the funny thing is I actually am a Paramedic. I was hoping I could make up something crazy, like tell them I am an angry racist or something. But no :(
I've only been called once in 9 years. And I got out of it before I even had to go in and put on a show. They did it over the phone and I was randomly chosen to not have to do it. Luck was on my side.
I had jury duty last summer and it was HORRIBLE. We sat around for 6 hours and did nothing until we got called in. Then I was able to excuse myself because I had a doctor's appointment I couldn't miss. They really need to pay people more than $10 a day for doing it.
Oh, dear. Sarah, I usually enjoy your perky optimism and your views on life, but you are so wrong about jury duty. Yes, it can be inconvenient, but it's part of our duty as citizens to keep democracy alive. If you ever wound up in court, accused of a crime, wouldn't you want a jury of people who were willing to listen to the facts and give you a fair trial? I hope that the next time you're called, you'll go in with a more willing attitude. :)
Each and every one of us? Nope :) you don't have to do it if you're not a citizen, and I'm an Austrian citizen, so unless I get a US citizenship (which I might eventually), I'll never have to serve jury duty. But I'd probably totally be the person acting crazy in jury selection :)
i haven't gotten jury duty yet. but unless i really have something else i need to do i wouldn't want to get out of it. i've always wanted to serve and i get jealous when people tell me they got jury duty.
lol I had to go to jury duty in kansas and I lived in hawaii. I was only in kansas for 6 months! and I wrote them a LONG letter and had to prove that I was in hawaii by forms of employment and other forms..but they still havent sent me anything about it to go to another jury duty..now im back in kansas and havent been called to do it yet...
