If you have ever read any of Suzanne Vega's interviews you would know what Suzanne said; "Luka was a boy I used to see in my old neighborhood, although it's not necessarily about him. It is his name, I did get his character, but this is not really the situation that he was in, and actually it could be about almost anybody who has been abused in some way." She even states it's not necessarily about the boy, but leaves it up to the interpretation of the listener...So I guess we are both right.

Yes, it's about child abuse. Suzanne Vega has also said that she kept the lyrics vague enough so that it could be about a battered spouse as well. Luka could be a child, woman or man.

Luka is definitely male. It's an eastern European version of Luke and it is never feminine any more than Luke is (although I have come across a woman named Luka, who looked old enough to have been born around the time this song was out).

I have to agree with Mrsunsn. At the very end of the clip is the logo of the old "Late Night with David Letterman" which was on NBC. The studios were in the same building as SNL, 30 Rockefeller Plaza in NYC.
