This is cool. I love crushed velvet, I have a blue crushed velvet chair from the late 70s that was my parents'. Too bad it's not in style anymore, but it looks so cool!
It really depends on the velvet you use and washing vs. drycleaning. If you emboss or crush a soft, knit velvet it's likely that the emboss will wash out. If it does, you can always just emboss it again. But for stable fabrics, with good crisp images, dry cleaning is certainly safe and in many cases washing is too. I'd experiment with a scrap in all cases to see how your fabric works with your cleaning method.
