A good idea is to add a house bit to the chicken coop to make it look neater, and to allow you access by putting a door on it. Another Idea would be to add a Fence Gate to it, allowing access. You should also put more fencing around the area you are building in to prevent chickens from escaping, if you so choose to add on to it.

If you want a nice-looking portal with 12 obsidian, build the bottom row economy-style and just place it so that the bottom of the portal is level with the ground. Then you can build the rest of the portal properly, and it looks exactly the same. (I realize this is a badly-worded explanation, so here is an equally-bad diagram :| )
