Mr. Prior is very young and unfortunately being a musical prodigy does not make you a conducting prodigy (in the truest sense of the word: as good as a pro). It is so much more than being a good musician. I think he'll get there one day but he's going to have to work on his ego first. (I've met him so this isn't just speculation.)
All you arm chair conductors out there: HUSH! This is passionate and convincing conducting. He has plenty of time to refine his craft - the instincts are there. What were you doing at this age?
this is shocking - he looks at his score too often, his gestures are too frenzied and insane, his baton technique is at best poor and he is not in time with orchestra at several points. Not to mention at 1 point he stopped conducting!

@Choirmaster2007 i agree. the main point of the conductor is to have a solid sense of tempo for the piece. everything else to be stated clearly through his gestures with one or two hands. judging from his movements, they were supposed to play the opening movement at fffffff. confusing and silly.
im sure the attitude is different with orchestras in russia but if this guy was conducting me this way i would go out of my way to sound like crap...dont need his inflated gestrues and sophomoric banalities
@licoricestic i see what u are saying but this is WAY more musical and satisfying than seeing conductors simply keeping tempo and doing nothing more with expressiveness.
I just LOVE to see the way u are conducting Alex:D The passion, and the expressive way u are doing it is great! its really unbelievable that you are only 17!
Andre Previn tells the story of Pierre Monteux coming to one of Previn's first concerts as a symphonic conductor. When they got together for a "post-mortem", Monteux asked Previn how he thought the orchestra had played the finale of the Haydn symphony that was on the program. Previn couldn't remember any glaring errors, so he said, "I think they played it very well." Monteux said, "So do I. Next time, don't get in their way so much."
wow,,,,i just love music orchestra now...im 19...he's amazing and he's just 17??...so young and talented...im a fan of him now,,,..i hope he have a twitter account..
I am not a musician just a father of one so my observation does not have the critical eye of one that knows the music. But as one who appreciates the arts and performance I loved the show. Alex works with extreme passion and knowledge of his art. I love it. So cool Mr. Alex Prior. dp

Take note, Mr. Prior.

With so many attacks so audibly not together, you'd think that he might re-examine the way he beats time.
