Hey, where did you get your bees from? They are so nice and calm with you. I am looking to start a hive for the first time and I would like to know if you know what kind they are and if you could tell me where you purchased them? Thanks in advance Bro. Prepper :)
Maybe this will help. Entrance reducers on hives that are not fully developed are a necessity. the activity in front of these hives suggest you need them. The reducers that came with your hive have two common size doors. Since the bees are backing up with the largest, what you need to do is make your own reducers with larger openings, for this level of activity somewhere around 60-75% of the length of the whole reducer. Once the hive is full strength you can pull the reducers.
I really like the stain color! I have a Top Bar Hive and put 6 coats of the Helmsman Spar satin varnish on it, keeping the wood's color. After seeing yours, I wish I had used the walnut. Are your hives 8 or 10 frames? Did they come from Brushy Mt ?
you need to do two things 1 put a wooden entrance reducer till your hives gets strong enough !! 2 hang some yellow jackets or wasps traps 10 or 15 feet away from your hives !!
If I have that many wasps "visiting" the hives, I'd put in an entrance reducer NO DOUBT about it!! Even with nuc colonies that is too much space for them to defend!
@generalbomax I went out yesterday and put on the reducers. Within 60 seconds the front of the hive started to get covered with bees trying to get in. I am concerned the neighbors will start complaining so I removed the reducer. The hive seems strong enough to fend for themselves. I have not seen any invaders inside. I'm hoping for the best.
I had no idea watching bee's could be so entertaining, pretty cool. Bee's in a subdivsion? I would have thought that would be an issue, but apperently not. Those bee's are really cool, Im learning lots. Thanks! -You keep showing yummie stuff in the solar oven. Had to add that to the list too. Hard to keep up with you guys.
@paidskn1488 I was wondering that too. It could be that Italian bees, which these are, are bred because they are not aggressive. But they are aggressive enough to keep these wasps out.
@jerwar68 I don't. I have my nephew mow. :) Actually there has been no problem with mowing and weed whacking around the hives. Just don't aim the gas lawn mower exhaust into the hives when you go past them.
@BexarPrepper Great comment. I have entrance reducers but the bees are so active and defending their hive so well I don't want to cause a bee backup on the front of the hive by using a reducer.

@Riversland6544 LOL, it was so obvious! Why didn't I think about hanging out wasp traps. Thanks for the recommendation. That is just too funny.

Your neighbors have better gardens and flowers because of your bees.

Why dont the bees go out of there way and go full on attack?

How do you mow around them. Do they bother you or what do you do?

what about getting one of those door reducers I've seen others have so that your bees don't have to defend so much open space?
