In the TTGL universe, Simon finds Lagann, he, Kamina, and Yoko form Team Gurren. This is like asking, 'What if Simon never took action?' Which is a good question.

Ya know, I have a theory. If you pay attention when the masked "man" dies, you can see the mask break away revealing a young woman. From the way the Simon look alike screams in anger at the end, I think that woman might have been either his mother or sister and she was forced there as a form of torture or way to control them.

I dunno guys this is interesting but, I think that if we got a Kamina-esqued as main character and pilot of Lagann the story would have been so cliche. Simon actually for me no matter how unimportant or weak was in the first episodes, he did a great role for the conflict and plot of the anime that fixed all and turned into something awesome different from Kamina, althou I like Kamina more.
