  • I remember this song being played a lot on Radio Caroline circa 1966 or thereabouts, there were a lot of "protest songs " about in those days, "We Shall Overcome", "Eve Of Destruction"etc, etc, what made this one stand out, is that it seems such a happy song. It is great to be able to play & listen to it. The video suits this song perfectly, it's an absolute gem!

  • Microsoft vision of the future?

  • That bit where she twirls the golf club around is just amazing. I've only just noticed it. Wow! WHIZZ

  • Jolly, childish song with a real unexpected sinister twist at the end...

    Great work.

  • Push a little button and the world goes boom! :P

  • easily one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

  • I hope that Ninette is getting something for the commercial use of this song - she deserves it after all the years.

  • wot a great song thanks its very Uplifting

  • love it

  • Pretty song, scary thought xxx

  • from this day on, whenever i push a button i will think of this song.

  • It's now easier to pay your TV Liscence online...

  • in a way, this video reminded me of 'The Sims' :]

  • you push a little button and you get bankgkok tranny porn

  • I thought this was a new pop/indie song! Nice.

  • Great earworm! The song has everything to make it catchy. Then again it was written by Tony Hatch. Nuff sed! :-)

  • This is a brilliant, simple but effective song written by Tony Hatch - THE MASTER! His sister Ninette has such a great voice.

  • thumbs up if you were here because of that advert on tv

  • Very annoying that youtube doesn't allow this to be played on the iphone. Any reason why it has been set like that?

  • BRILLIANT video! Fits perfectly with the song. If they ever rereleased this song, the would be the perfect video to accompany it.

  • having watched this again, she has a pretty good golf swing on her lol

  • The other night I saw part of this original film in BBC2's "American Dream" programme.

  • @drstevie

I have sent you a message to a link on amazon. I hope that helps you ;-)

  • yeah twin town!!!!!!

  • Typical of the BBC to co-opt something and change its original meaning.

  • is there an allbum ?

  • Such a simple song and what an amusing video too

  • What a Great little song!

  • I heard this on the BBC tv licensing ad :P

  • Push a little button and eliminate israel...lol..joke joke

  • Looks like an old edition of "Tomorrow's World". Or one of those classic '70s gameshows where the star prize was a kitchen with all mod cons.

  • Fabulous, can't get this jingle out if my head since the BBC started showing it as part of the licensing promo.

  • I love this song!

  • I love this song - it's a cute, happy song but also sounds like a gentle warning against technology, especially the ending!

  • so tony hatch is your uncle.i must tell uncle elvis

  • love the song. thanks for the info about the film. the full version is on youtube. 'Design for Dreaming 1956 General Motors Motorama Film' or just search for general motors 1956. the kitchen scene starts at 3:21. great how that just fits nicely and is just the right length for this song.

  • Hi, Kleopatra.

Thank you for your reply. I figured that the film likely dated from the late '50's or early '60's. I recall seeing a fair amount of such "futuristic propaganda" on TV when I was a child. For those who might be curious, the main set in the 1958 Jacques Tati film *Mon Oncle* actually looks a lot like the kitchen in this short film.

  • the woman in the video is not my aunt Ninette this is just some footage someone has put to the song which my aunt is singing when she was 15 and the song was written by my uncle Tony Hatch who composed the theme tunes for Neighbours, Crossroads, Emmerdale Farm and wrote many other songs including Downtown for Petula Clarke. There is a Facebook group about this song Push A Little Button so please join for more info. Thanks.

  • Hi Hayley,

As I Said To Hypnopomp a Few Day's ago, in Case You Missed it. I said It was Part of a Short Film Made by General Motors in 1956, to Highlight Detroit's Growing Prosperity. On Saturday Last Week. BBC2 had A Detroit Night, Car Manufacturing & Motown Music etc, and They Showed about 5 Seconds of the Original Film.

  • @1974Hayley It's a fab song though, kind of sticks in your head. Which is I guess what Tony was trying to achieve as he does with all the stuff he did for ATV Music back in the day.

  • @1974Hayley Any chance of it ever being re released ?

  • @1974Hayley

Has anybody realised that the message of this song is diametrically opposed to the message of the TV Licensing ad? They had to do some pretty nifty editing of the song to ensure it gave the viewers the message they wanted, which is that this wonderful automation has made it a lot simpler to renew your TV licence!

    TheWordandSpirit

  • @TheWordandSpirit

    yup

the song is about how easy and automated it was for someone to press a little red button and blow us all to kingdom come......

the BBC is saying how easy it is to push a little button to get ripped off for £145 for overpaid gits to get a around £3.5 billion of our money for putting on cheap crap. or get hounded and fined or jailed...

yep... I'm sure the original message of the song was not meant to be used for that.

  • @mustymodo

totally agree with you, the BBC are so patronising and try to make it sound like it's a joy to be paying them

  • @1974Hayley i think the lady might be dianna carol well it looks like her any way

  • @1974Hayley Added in FB now

  • ....Just because fashions have changed doesnt give you the right to assume such. Its called the 60's given time I am sure some immature individual will look back on what people wear now and say..."What are they wearing?"

  • IKEA!

  • Wow Hayley I hope your aunt is well, she looks great in in the film, and it's no wonder the song is still populal now being written by the very talented "Tony Hatch".

You are so lucky to belong to this family!

  • please join the Facebook group about this song and all the information you need to know can be found there. This is my aunt Ninette singing when she was 15 and was written by her brother (also my uncle) Tony Hatch in the 1960's.

  • My mum used to live round the corner from your unle how are things

  • fantastic i love it

  • fantastic tune cant stoo replaying it .

  • Does anyone know exactly what this film is, where it comes from, date, etc.?

  • Hi Hypnopomp,

It was Part of a Short Film Made by General Motors in 1956, to Highlight Detroit's Growing Prosperity. On Saturday. BBC2 had A Detroit Night, Car Manufacturing & Motown Music etc, and They Showed about 5 Seconds of the Original Film.

  • @KLEOPATRA1960s The 55 year old video footage you found is perfect for the song. You could not have found anything that suited it better. This song and that footage should forever be entwined.

  • Irritatingly catchy. Can I get it as a ringtone from anywhere?

  • @ThePM1947 just make it a ringtone

  • this is my aunt Ninette singing when she was 15 and the song was writen by my unlce Tony Hatch in the 1960's. There is a Facebook group about this please join.

  • how thick are the bbc to use this song??? we don't care about you license-payers - just push the little button and pay up!

  • please don't get me wrong, people, i love this fantastic song! and it's true i would never have heard it if not for the bbc ad. but surely if it's a gentle warning against automation, and the bbc are using this song to encourage us to pay for the tv license via computer - have they not misunderstood the point? i LOVE that this song is so popular! xx

  • That is a rather dark ending isn't it!

  • what a brilliant, and, unexpected ending

  • thats some deep shit at the end

  • I just heard it on the Telly OMG awesome

  • wow...I looked everywhere for this song!

I heard it on the advert and now i luvz it!

  • Yopu can download this from iTunes how great is that excellent !

  • how cool is that - back in the top 100 after 44 years ! more air play please !!

  • great song from a lovely lady. Michael x

  • A sparkling gem- recently rediscovered and as bright as ever-timeless!

  • The tune sounds like the verse of Sugar & Spice by the Searchers!

  • Maybe it's because both songs were written by Tony Hatch.

  • Yes, of course. The similarity between the two is obvious now. I believe Tony Hatch published 'Sugar and Spice' under the name 'Fred Nightingale'. He's Britain's Burt Bacharach for sure.

  • I thought this was done by the same peron who did "the beep song", because they appear (to me) to have a similar voice, and there is something similiar in the song... but I was wrong.

  • Great choon

  • lovely little tune. How did the BBC find it for their advert.

  • Fabulous, congratulations Ninette! I had no idea no you idea you were a superstar!

    Jonathan x

  • i just like this song,as said on BBC advert

  • There's something sinister about that video

  • hehehe, i loved that last line!

  • lame

  • I want it as a ring tone on my phone

  • this is also available to download on amazon. Go Auntie Ninette! Fame at last! xx

  • Good little number Ninette..... She is still as bright and chirpy as she sounds here... I live near her in Italy and she is a great family friend..... Good luck to them both!!!!

  • It's up on iTunes today (Sat). Apparently they found Ninette living in Italy. Belated stardom beckons...

  • Ah been waiting to hear this on here I knew someone would know it-how do the BBC come up with these tunes-mind you it was really good until the final "phttt goes you and me" reminded me of the nuclear threat of the 80's-to hell with Protect & Survive-stick this on and watch the pretty white mushroom cloud explode in the distance-how far we have come:D

  • This is great, thanks for posting, why isn't it on iTunes it should be, I noticed its on the Tony Hatch cd but long deleted ... hope for re-release...

  • dear mr Hatch re realese this and show some bloke called simon what a good song is thanks

  • what a great song. id never heard it before i saw it on t.v. I dont know why its never been used more before, its fantastic! Hat's off to the one and only Mr Hatch and that lovely voice of Ninette.

  • 247 Hit's in 24 Hour's, Amazing.

  • What a brilliant little innocent song. I have searched high and low to find this. I cannot believe that this song is not available to buy in the UK. This would be a big hit. Thanks Kleopatra for putting this onto YouTube

  • Yes, Everyone Keeps Saying what a Chirpy Little Song this is. I was Surprised it was'nt on YouTube, so I Thought I would Put this One on. My Copy is on the Tony Hatch CD "Call Me: The Songs of Tony Hatch". But I Don't know if it is still Available.

  • Terrific song and now it's being used by BBC to plug the TV License.

  • Yes, It is a terrific song, written by Tony Hatch and a single for Ninette in 1966.

  • Just found out that Ninette is in fact Tony Hatch's sister! The thick plottens.

  • I realised how Popular the Song is at the Moment, because of the BBC Advert. I was Surprised no One had Put it on YouTube Yet. So I have. I Added the Little Film Separately, And they Both Go Amazingly well Together.

  • Yes, the record and the film do go together remarkably well. Great job.
