Believe it or not, when people first started ROM Hacking, their stuff was pretty crappy. Even though there are more tools available to change things now a days, keep in mind he said it was his first. He was probably just playing around with stuff.
Back in the day my stuff wasn't too great either. (But people liked it anyway for some reason.)
