my 5100using windows 7 (not supported by the 5100) doesn't detect the USB controller, but it boots normally and everything else appears stable.

could this be a bad south bridge?

I upgraded my Acer Aspire 5100:

2 GB RAM instead of the orig. 1 GB

Seagate Momentus XT harddrive (HDD) (250GB, hybrid type: i.e. includes an extra 4GB flash storage and a 7200 rpm disk) instead of the original Hitachi 5400 rpm HDD.

Windows 7 32-bit instead of Vista

Because of the new super quick HDD and the extra RAM, and the dual core AMD processor, the machine is very quick.

Windows 7 installs very nicely on it too. I might switch to 64-bit Windows if I ever put more RAM in it.

@yekiti you dont have money to buy quality becaus acer is complet shit, Toshiba last 4 time more longer than acer, + acer hardware is so cheap, it breaks and stop working after couple months. I had 2 acer laptops and they both broke within a year, I had a toshiba satellite for over 2 year now and work 100% had not problems since I purchase it... so, good if it fit u, but consider getting some quality when u'll get money.

yoo i have one like this and i had it for 1 1/2 years and i had a toshiba laptop and i broke 3 days after just crashed so toshiba was a bad purchase

im not saying all of the toshiba's are bad just some are

also Acer does not have cheap software/Hardware so fuck off bitch

Just to let people know Vista does have the abilty to use 100% of 3gb ram if installed. People complain that Vista cannot see all the 3gb of ram and that is a lie! VIsta used to see 2.5gb of memory but ever since I upgraded my ati x1250 to 8600gt I am able to use all of my 3gb of ram not a mb less. So for the people who complain just get a new video card!!

i know the 8600 sucks i regret buying the moment i played bioshock on it. that game put it to its knees. that was a waste of $100. i shuldve spent the $35 more on the 8800 but no my dad didnt want to pay the extra thinking it wasnt worth it. anyways all i want to ask u is why the hell did you post a stupid comment like "wow......... your an idioot your" could you please explain? thanks.

hmmm..ildo wat i want to do with my money and if i want to buy a new video card then i will buy a new video card. I think the 8800gt is more than enough for my needs and should be pretty good for crysis on med and cod4 maxed out. And last time I checked I control my life not you so dont tell me what to do.

hell yeah, i use all of 1 gb just running vista, firefox and virus software. i suggest 4gb for vista. that's my setup anyway, plenty left over for gaming, video editing, etc. i'm showing a total of 3581MB available, using 1007MB, 2574 free.
