  • For more please look up "Me Tarzan" and "Rockin' Rickie Rocket" which my school did last year and they are extremely fun

  • oh, and most percussion instruments are known in the membranophone family, which means it can produce sound by itself, i.e. hitting, shaking, etc. so yes, the pen and table can be considered percussion, if the music indicates as so.

  • This was truly brillant. I LOVE seeing things like this, taking it out of the box. That's why percussion is so valuable and amazing, because it's the rhythm that can be taken anywhere.

  • XDXDXD

  • My Music Teacher is making us make up one of these!

We got to throw paper at her! XD

  • Watched this in class today :P

  • I'm in percussion (pit in marching band) and we did something inspired by this for our section talent show! It was pretty awesome, no lie.

  • awesome.. :D

  • K, we're doing this during our percussion class exam this year :)

  • Is the name of the piece actually "The Exam"?

  • absolute genius- John Cage would be proud. :-!

  • lil vikings

  • We hit it off so well after another visit busizz4me.info

  • HUSSS

  • Haters gonna hate, but I thought it was AMAZING. So well done, and so true to life! Anyone who's ever sat an exam in a big hall will identify with the sounds used here. such a shame someone coughed @ ~ 1:15 :(

  • Love it when they all go crazy!!

  • HiYa!! How do I get the music. I just want a couple of pages to use in my classroom as a score reading exercise.

  • pretty cool gotta like and save to favs!

  • Hey I contacted the guy who was said to have sheet music for this, but he never got back to me! Do you, uploader, have the sheet music? I'd like to get this for my orchestra's (El Camino Youth Symphony) percussion ensemble. Thanks in advance!

This sounds amazing too, must have been a lot of fun! :)

  • :D very funny:-)

  • lol this is crazy i fukkin love it :) <3

  • this is stupid

  • It SUCKS

  • wow...I really love "stomp"

  • mortal!

  • they were a little off on some of the parts

  • this is very very good, thanks for publishing this, i am in a percussion drum line/ensemble and i was sooooo excited to see something so creative! great job this is amazing

  • one part, one of them should go "Answers 0.57kmph!!!!!!!!!!!" and gets kicked out by a scottish shoetapper who kicks his ass.

  • This was really awesome! Would've loved to perform in this!

Been playing percussion for 8yrs, and was kinda sad that our percussion group at school was quite small.

  • lol never thought of something like this

  • that was retarded.....

  • i'm a percussion major, i know things

  • even the piano is a percussive instrument as a hammer hits a string!

  • idiots

  • bonne idée, mais dans l'ensemble, je ne suis pas impressionné.

Ils auraient pu faire des rythmes plus précis et élaborés, il me semble

  • The striking together of two bodies, especially when noise is produced.

That is the definition of Percussion. So this is without a doubt a percussion ensemble. Just because they aren't using instruments (Which really to me anything can be an instrument.) doesn't mean this isn't percussion. Snapping your fingers and clapping your hands is perc. Anything that makes a noise from when you hit it is Perc.

  • The rhythm so cool =D

  • i would love to do that at my school .but i would bring in a teacher with high heels and a ruler to smack on the tables

  • this giggling is awfully boring...

  • i dont suppose you guys would have a problem if i tried to teach this to my percussion section would you? lol. it doesnt look too difficult, and would be quite entertaining to do at the spring concert =P

  • comments like what? what does it matter if its indoor or outdoor? isnt percussion...well, percussion? lol

  • you have a lot of room to call someone ignorant. percussion is an art, music, a passion. if a percussion section uses pencils and hands to create their own music, then hey, still percussion. "percussion" is the art of making music or rythem using one object to contact another. sticks on a drum, hands on a bongo, hammers in a piano, and what do you know?!?! hands on pencils on a desk. great job guys, good rythem and coordination. especially since there was no sheet music.

  • @MeleeMunchkin You haven't seen anything else they have done, you can't say that they're not a percussion ensemble. They have made stuff like this, stomp-ish numbers, to Carmina Burana. So, you are wrong. Thnx for the comment though!

  • @PlatonnotalP i agree with meleemunchkin but ill put it in non-douchebagish words.

This is more of a rythm ensemble. if it were a percussion ensemble, it would have bass drums, snare drums, etc. Its a very good piece but its not "technically" percussion. I hope this doesnt offend anyone.

  • Yea... only a person as ignorant as you would call it not percussion. rhythm is the basis of all music and as a percussionist you expand your music and playing to all different types of instruments, be it a pen or a desk or a trash can. apparently you have not been exposed to good percussion ensembles because not all of the pieces have keyboard instruments. keyboards don't have to have the melody in this case the beats that are created are the melodic lines. do some research

  • Says a person who probably has no sense in melody... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to waste my indoor percussion competition doing this play.

  • this isn't indoor percussion. you really need to do some more research before you make comments like this.

  • THIS IS a percussion ensemble, I think you're the ignorant one... who can't spell rhythm xD

percussion can be anything, marimba, vibraphone, timpani, clocks, there all tuned percussion... so it's not just keyboards.

    ...

take this one from a 7 year percussionist/ drummer and ex music student.

    GET WISE FOOOL!

    peace motha ;)

  • thats @ melee...

  • @MeleeMunchkin Umm, no. Percussion is not restricted to just keyboards and battery instruments. Anyways, there WERE battery instruments!! Just because it was a desk or the floor doesn't change the fact that it was a battery instrument. And it had auxiliary as well: pens, sniffs, and yells. You need to learn the definition of percussion before you make a fool of yourself like this. And it also seems like you need to look up some other things because this is a music composition, not a play. Idiot.

  • @MeleeMunchkin a percussion instrument can be many things. In this case, they're all using desks as a percussion instrument.

  • Were did you go, to the school of the uninformed? I have played and witnessed many percussion instruments that did not require the use of a battery or auxilary equipment. Anything that makes noise can be turned into a percussion instrument.

  • @MeleeMunchkin sooo ive in a percussion ensemble for 3 years and went through lots of music and not once is te been a song that has keyboards sooo stfu

  • @MeleeMunchkin Percussion is anything that makes rhythm and you or something else its it to make it make sound... They definately meet all those aspects.

  • @MeleeMunchkin

Yeah... this really IS a percussion ensemble. Percussion is defined as any instrument or object that a person hits, shakes, or scrapes to produce sound (I should know, I'm a percussionist). There are many percussion ensemble pieces that don't use typical orchestral percussion. Only a person as ignorant would not identify this as a form of percussion. If there's no keyboards, battery, or auxiliary, then it doesn't mean it's not percussion. Who's the idiot who doesn't know better?

  • @MeleeMunchkin That comment was the stupidest thing I've ever heard, you should just take it down, you're embarrassing yourself.

  • @MeleeMunchkin If you can make music by striking it, it's percussion.

  • @MeleeMunchkin Have you heard of the contemporary style, where music continues to evolve into new divisions and acquires new mediums?

  • @MeleeMunchkin Hey bud, if you can make a sound with it then it's an instrument. if multiple people play and instrument then it is an ensemble. There for you are completely wrong. Only a person as ignorant would not know what they are talking about.

  • WHERE DO I GET THE SHEET MUSIC TO THIS

  • Did... they say "nein"?

  • Yeah... sort of. ;P They said "Nej!", wich is the swedish word for "no".

  • anyone ever seen the percussion group STOMP? seriously...all they do is play rhythms on things like desks, brooms, basketballs, etc but you can't say that they suck and aren't musical because of that......

  • Yea I've seen Stomp. I wish I could do that!

  • The classroom idea was so promising, yet the music is nothing but a series of rhythmic clichés. Although visually interesting, in my opinion there is little music going on.

  • ensemble only means more than one person playing,

  • Jgauthier5 your wrong, a percussion ensemble doesn't have to be percussion instruments and it doesn't have to sound musical.

  • I guess you don't like to think, right? Percussion is about rythm. I guess you can't grasp that thought... :P

  • sure its rythm but its not a percussion ensamble, its more of a cadence

  • Please google or wiki cadence, because you clearly don't know what you are talking about. :P Also, you haven't seen any other number by this group, so you can't say that these guys are not a percussion ensemble... you are just stupid, sir! :D

  • Uhm, lol... ok? So the type of music a group plays defines what that group is called? Give me a break. These guys are playing jazz, they do stuff like this and they have played Carl Orffs O Fortuna. The thing that YOU can't comprehend is that the term percussion is used on everything that can make a percussive sound, therefore, it doesn't matter if it's a classical piece or not, it's still made by a percussion ensemble. Stop being a douche... the thumbs down on your comments means that you suck.

  • one question, are you in this?

  • No i am not. But former classmates are. Sooooo?

  • i was just wondering

  • you are actually wrong. my marching band uses a brake from an old car as a percussion instrument. we also you a bunch of woodblocks tied together to sound like an army walking. so please don't try to call this lame when in sure all of the students in this video are good percussionists

  • Brake drum and marching machine, they are not very exotic instruments, nothing like this.

  • @Jgauthier5

Percussion is defined as any instrument or object that a person hits, shakes, or scrapes to produce sound (I should know, I'm a percussionist - and a classically-trained one, too!) Therefore this is is a percussion ensemble. There are many percussion ensemble pieces that don't use typical orchestral/classical percussion - I've played some of them! "The Exam" is not a classical piece of music, but other styles of percussion DO exist. Why Call me stupid if you can't comprehend? :D

  • @Jgauthier5

Firstly, I've seen, heard & played many percussion ensemble pieces that only use one type of instrument - for example, only snare drums, only xylophones, or only bass drums.

Secondly, they are not only using desks - they are using their pens, hands (clapping), and feet, too.

  • sweet now if only they would let us do this at my school....

  • Bravo!!! Congratulations to the teacher and to children of course!

  • haha my school did our own version of this at our percussion show called "Percussion Madness". It was pretty sick. Me and a couple of my friends got to jump off desks and it was pretty fun.

This is really sick though. They get into it. I love it =)

  • How cool... :) did you film it? Would love to see it... :D

  • that was siiiiiccccc

  • this reminds me of stomp

  • how can I find the sheet music for this?

  • Unfortunately, there aren't any sheet music. These guys learned it by eye and ear from their teacher and composer Johan Eriksson. But it shouldn't be that hard to learn this i think. :)

  • lol

  • It's quite fun promoting yourselves, huh? No, you're not better, at all... but you're not bad either. Keep it going, and please don't be overconfident... 'cause nobody likes an overconfident musician.

  • yeah axl rose

  • SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOL wowowoowow :D

  • This so cool my drumline teacher says we should do something like this for my schools spring mucical.

  • Awesome. That really rocks. Like the original STOMP ;)

How would a teacher react, if students do this in reality during exam?! :D

  • thats. a. great. idea. YESSSS!!!! haha totally wanna do that now.

  • Pretty sweet. Wish there were more split parts in the beginning.

Second part was a bit over my head. Not sure what head-banging and pounding your hands on the desk had to do with an exam...

No idea what you were screaming, either. lol

The concept, and the over-all rhythm was pretty cool, though. I'd try to work in some sort of feet-tapping, coughing, clearing your throat as well to the production... ... give a bit more atmosphere to the sounds of a test-taking classroom, you know??

  • Well.. The piece is about students. They are bored so they decides to have some fun.

  • Comment removed

  • anyone wanna make sheets for this? this is INCREDIBLE i'd love to proform it (of course giving credit to the original composer). but that is insane. i'd love to play this.

  • that was frekin awesome!

im deffinatly gonna talk to my band director about doing something like that :]

  • can you please tell me the name of the publishing company for this piece???? our high school wants to do it but can't find it anywhere..........thanks

  • Sorry, there aren't any publishing company for this piece. It's written by Johan Eriksson, an old teacher of mine, and i believe that there isn't any sheet music for this either. Another person who asked Johan got the answer that they have to learn the piece by ear(and eye)... it's not incredibly hard though. :) Good luck!

  • Well.. There aint any sheet's for it. We all learned it by ear. Johan (the composer and my former teacher) showed us how to do this piece by piece so to say.

If you want to do it you have to just listen and watch the video Im afraid.

    Good luck to ya.

  • Dude....thats amazing. I want the score for that shit.

  • that is so cool

i just saw the percussion ensemble at my school do this really really well and i had 2 see it again.

    who wrote this?

  • Johan Eriksson is the name of the composer. He's a old teacher of mine. :)

  • I liked it. :)

is the an original composition or is it stock?

  • It is an original composition, written by a old teacher of mine... :)

  • I wish our ensemble would do something like that. The only problem with the video is that the audio and visual don't match up, but I know you didn't take the video.

  • rhythms could have been tighter, its kinda sloppy... :(

  • I were there when they did this performance and i thought it wasn't that sloppy. Maybe it's the crappy quality that makes it sound bad in your ears? I don't know... :P but they're awesome for their age.

  • I agree with GaussRifleGrun

  • Then you are a retard. When you listen to a normal symphony orchestra and a noramal song, usually about over 40% of what you are hearing is coming from the percussion section alone.

  • What you said about the normal symphony orchestra part is sort of overexagerrated, most of the time percussionists play the parts that accent what everybody else is playing, and they don't play a lot compared to everybody else. But I agree with you, that percussion is the most versaitile and the most cool sounding in the whole band/orchestra/group, therefore percussion is very important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • how come when i do this in school i get yelled at lol!!

  • This isn't a percussion ensemble.

  • And how exactly do you know that? You haven't seen their other pieces and performerances have you? So I won't let you be the judge about that. You know, the body can be an istrument, so can an stool or a schoolbench... that comment just shows how narrow minded you are. Just enjoy the music, and stop being a cunt... :) thank you! ^^

  • This is more of a rhythmn group. A percussion ensemble has percussion instruments like, say, keyboards (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone), battery (snare drum, bass drum), auxillary (triangle, vibraslap, chime tree), and timpani. Also, I know this because I am a percussionist.

  • Read the previous reply... you haven't seen their other pieces. Thank you!

  • Show me.

  • As a percussionist, you should be open minded enough to realize that there are more instruments than the ones you listed. I have seen plenty of pieces like this, and I'm sorry that you haven't had the privilege! All the percussionists I know want to bang on everything that will make a noise - they are fascinated by sounds as well as rhythms. Next thing we know, you'll be saying "this isn't music." Sheesh.

  • You're an idiot.

  • Really? I've been pretty damn happy lately.

    Definitely not miserable.

    Get a life.

  • My percussion ensemble has all of this, but we also do pieces like this one. Percussion ensembles do all sorts of different things. Broaden yourself and stop being so ... narrow. Music takes many different styles.

I know this because I am a percussionist.

  • You forgot an entire classification of percussion instruments - idiophones. They include things like vibraslap, whip, sleighbells, lionsroar and so on and so on and so on. In other words most anything else you can think of that makes some soft of percussive sound. Plenty of percussion ensembles to pieces that do not have a particular melody. To judge a group based on one piece is a bit silly. I know this because I was a percussion major in college and a PAS member.

  • @GaussRifleGrunt

If you're really a percussionist, as you claim, then you should know that percussion is any instrument/object that a person hits, shakes, or scrapes in order to produce a sound. Therefore, this IS a percussion ensemble. I've seen, heard, and played many percussion ensemble pieces that don't utilize typical orchestral/classical percussion instruments. Also, I know this because I am a percussionist.

  • jsut had my gcse drama exam the other day on a scripted piece called the exam....

why o why did i not take this idea for it!!!

  • im getting my friends to do this with me lol

  • verry nice

  • I might do this in my next exam...or at an interview lol

  • what did they say near the end at about 1:35 and 1:39?

  • They yelled "no" and "im going crazy"... :D well, in swedish. xD

  • good, but i reckon you should check my stomp performance ... its pretty good i gotta tell you!

  • reminds me of STOMP

  • haha hloy fuck...nice headbanging

  • haha hloy fuck...nice headbanging

  • This should probably be posted again just because the Music dose not sync with the video but nonetheless a great video to watch

  • That was awesome, di yall make that up or go by music? anyways... great job.

  • Our teacher Johan wrote that piece :) also check out "music for a cranky old lady"

  • that waz hella tight

  • hahaha this is cool

  • hell ya

  • awesome! I wish the percussion at my school could do this

  • it's such a shame the vid and sound are out of sync. amazing performance.

  • Very cool. AT around 2:50, however, the sound gets a little out of sync, and makes the entire things look a little funny. But very good, I'm impressed at how much practice you must have put in to get a group that large to work together.

  • it got so subtle towards the end..

  • very nice :)

  • Great concept and the highlights came with those actions that seemed in place with the bored student persona -- the sniffing, drumming fingers etc. The middle part was a bit stretched, too little variety, too much pencil drumming and the sound quality in loud sections was a little jarring. You managed to stay together quite well, given your size. Nice work!

  • im in the front!!

  • I'm playing in the middle row.. =)
