Uhm, the past. Why do people so fanatical about understanding the past? What is there to understand other the fact that the circumstances of our nations birth were such that a divided people with a vastly different views about the past were asked to create a future for themselves as the guise of a republic. I'm not sure what you're asking here. Do you want the etymology, the origin, for the word "slave"? A quick look at etymonline shows that the word comes originally from Latin referring to the Slavs, an ethnic group in eastern Europe. It gradually came to be associated for enslaved men and women because of the large numbers of Slavs taken into captivity, although when (or if?) this actually happened I don't know.

Yes, the Africans did engage in slavery. The concept of slavery was, certainly, not foreign. However, the euro system was unprecedented in its barbarism.

I don't think anyone can legitimately argue that the Trans-Atlantic slave trade is one of humanity's greatest sins, but latching onto that as the root cause of problems in Liberia is counterproductive.
