A lot of people saying they dont deserve jail. As far as the story goes they did not follow correct emergency procedures and they could in fact have made it to land so maybe they do deserve to go to jail.
They could of made it to the airfield if captain was concentrated on one thing: flying the plane with minimum descend speed (as he should) As well as slowing down to reduce drag.
Copilot didn't turn the rotors in to position for glide. "Captain flys and coolpilot do checklist procedures" they failed to do that.
But anyway they don't deserve jail. It's easy for us to blame pilots. God knows what they went through. You don't expect something like that to happen.

It was a mistake from the pilot that did not check the refueling paperwork before take off when he thought the plane was refueled. In fact it was not refueled but the wrong fuel indicator was fitted (one from an earlier model). The difference was exactly 900 kg.

The pilots are not panicked at all, seem lil nervous -normal in such a situation-, but still remained professional. Survivors got all ape shit saying the pilot was panicking and blamed everything on him
Honestly every pilot would have ditched. In the simulations only 1/2 crews were able to reach the airport so 50% success with huge advantages like:
1.Knowing the defect in advance: No fuel!
2.Only simulating , your life is not at stake, you fail, just push a button and restart

His professional co-pilot would have looked at the glide charts and called out best glide speed, glide distance, and time to impact. There was no reason to put this aircraft down - it would have been able to glide home. An Airbus A330 managed to glide 80 miles with engines out (ran out of fuel because of a serious leak )and landed safely!
As you can see the main wing is floating - which means the fuel tanks are empty! the reason why things ended the way they did is because the captain ditched prematurely . It has since been worked out that had the crew feathered the props they could have GLIDED to their destination. The captain tried to ditch near a boat - which unfortunately didn't even see them! PE

But - they could reach the terrain only if they didn´t decent to 17000 feet when the first engine failed (but thats the correct procedure during single engine flameout). They could reach the terrain if they adjusted the props angle - but that would prevented them from restarting engines. Their fuelgage showed they had plenty of fuel - so they focused on restarting the engines.

Captain of ATR 72 that crashed in sea is former colegue of my father and yes unfortunately if the propeler was positioned for best glide ratio they would manage to get to the coast but unfortunetly there is no cure for panic, and panic is most common cause which lead to many accidents. What ????? the pilots didn't stop to pray !!! WTF is wrong with you people ? they were asking for god's help WHILE flying the plane because they were scared , any one would do that , they DIDN'T PAUSE to pray or something like that , they were flying the plane till the last second , I'm Tunisian and I understand every word they say , these men did all their best to crash safely !

@alexngai321 I mean, seriously, if they're talking about that last 10-15 seconds when he prayed, I mean holy shit, the only thing to do at that point is try to bleed off speed and keep the wings level. There are no emergency checklists to run through in the last 10 seconds before impact. How absurd. You heard one of them make sure the landing gear was up, that is proof they were thinking until the last second. The judge should be sentenced to life for stupidity. Unbelievable.

Once this crew was in this emergency situation they performed admirably, but the captain should never have left the gate with what he knew to be a questionable fuel status. He knew the fuel gauges indicated there was a lot more fuel in the plane than was in it the night before, he could find no record of anyone having added fuel, and he knew the fuel gauges had been replaced the day before. He violated regulations by taking off without reconciling the fueling status.

Very informative. I recall this when it happened but the news indicated that the pilot may have crashed intentionally. I'm glad to learn that he was rock solid and trying till the end. And I might also add, he seemed every bit as cool as the hudson guy.

@ransom1wi No, this plane with the fuel display problem is also one documentary on the "Air Crash" (not the 747). It was a mistake from the pilot that did not check the refueling paperwork before take off when he thought the plane was refueled. In fact it was not refueled but the wrong fuel indicator was fitted (one from an earlier model). The difference was exactly 900 kg.
They did survive! Worth watching!

The pilots are not panicked at all, seem lil nervous -normal in such a situation-, but still remained professional. Survivors got all ape shit saying the pilot was panicking and blamed everything on him
Honestly every pilot would have ditched. In the simulations only 1/2 crews were able to reach the airport so 50% success with huge advantages like:
1.Knowing the defect in advance: No fuel!
2.Only simulating , your life is not at stake, you fail, just push a button and restart

The nutter who put the wrong fuel guage in the aircraft should be hung up by the testicles,,,,which proves that in spite of the strict maintenance with aircraft..people are let loose on them who shouldn't be allowed near the airport..A jumbo from some banana republic flew into Heathrow with an odd engine in it.Vehicles were placed around it as they threatened to fly out again to get the floor repaired somewhere else..A correct engine was flown in from Boeing..You think I'm kidding but I'm not !

Professional? Really? "Try one's best" isn't the same thing as "Professional." A professional pilot would have pulled out the emergency procedures and gone down them in sequence. His professional co-pilot would have looked at the glide charts and called out best glide speed, glide distance, and time to impact. A professional pilot would have feathered the props much higher than 1100 feet. This is the audio that one plays for professional pilots to remind them what NOT to do.

There was no reason to put this aircraft down - it would have been able to glide home. An Airbus A330 managed to glide 80 miles with engines out (ran out of fuel because of a serious leak )and landed safely!

As you can see the main wing is floating - which means the fuel tanks are empty! the reason why things ended the way they did is because the captain ditched prematurely . It has since been worked out that had the crew feathered the props they could have GLIDED to their destination. The captain tried to ditch near a boat - which unfortunately didn't even see them! PE

Because of wrong fuel gauge from smaller ATR they thought that they still had fuel onboard, and thats why they tried to restart engines, thats what pilots always try to do unless there is fuel starvation, and in this case there was fuel starvation, but because of mechanician who installed wrong part they didnt know that. They lose some altitude and time when trying to do that, and were too low for nearest airport.

great pilots, their did their best. There were rumours that they could reach terrain. But - they could reach the terrain only if they didn´t decent to 17000 feet when the first engine failed (but thats the correct procedure during single engine flameout). They could reach the terrain if they adjusted the props angle - but that would prevented them from restarting engines. Their fuelgage showed they had plenty of fuel - so they focused on restarting the engines.

Captain of ATR 72 that crashed in sea is former colegue of my father and yes unfortunately if the propeler was positioned for best glide ratio they would manage to get to the coast but unfortunetly there is no cure for panic, and panic is most common cause which lead to many accidents. That little difference is difference between really good and average pilots. Most people that discuss here dont have clue about aviation and how jelly your bran can become when some unpredictinble stuff happen.

@milanboj85 they didn't adjust the propeller because they thought they still had fuel due to a faulty gauge. it's easy to play monday morning airline pilot when you know all the facts afterward, but they honestly thought they could restart the engines and get the plane down safely. i doubt anyone else would have magically realized that they were out of fuel and needed to feather the props. they didn't panic--they made what they thought were the right decisions to save lives.
