@attase Yeah its like vodka originated in Poland , but everyone rates Russian/Ukrainian vodka as the top stuff...Rum from places like Trinidad Tobago,Jamaica etc are second to none :D
I bet if someone actually performed a study of the history of rum production in the canary islands they would find evidence of some the true "oldest distilleries" on the planet that may even pre-date the discovery of the new world!
actually they distilled sugar cane molasses into "rum" in the canary islands long before they even discovered the Americas. The Spanish King actually ordered the relocation of many plantations and sugar specialists from the canary islands to the Caribbean in order to expand and industrialise sugar production as the canary islands became to small to house the industry due to Europe's huge demand for sugar. Canary Islanders were the very first European cultivators to settle in the Caribbean

regardless of any debate, to me it is evident that the canary islands was one of, if not the largest contributor to what we know today as Rum.
