  • LMAO funny video, awful miming!!! gotta love the 80s. Thanks for posting, this is great

  • And yes, I socialised a LOT with my african co-workers and Soweto was a good hangout for us.

Forget the media it don't show the true picture.

Still love Johnny Clegg and great for his efforts, want to go back and show my son the areas I know and lived (Hillbrow, Cresta, etc).

  • Apart from few that lived there can understand the real situation. I was there from 1987-1997 and experienced both sides pre and post-apartheid.

Also seen the ugly sides like neck-lacings, bombings, etc.

What most people don't get is that most the problems were between the african tribes and many africans where pro-whites and voted as such.

There is more hatred between the african tribes than between africans and whites.

And never be an asian or half-breed there = bad news.

  • Brings back some fantastic memories.

  • Great video and song! I love Johnny Clegg's music. It just looks a little strange with people in traditional African garb holding electric guitars :)

  • Close your eyes & U don't have to worry about 'colour'; enjoy the music, never mind about 'black & white'

  • Coming from a 'White' 40-something man born in S.A. -It doesn't matter who you are in South Africa, when you hear a Johnny Clegg or Jaluka or Savuka song, you are reminded of who you are and the miracle of South Africa, no one has musically weaved people together in Africa like JC. -Loved by all SA's people.

  • Yeah, "where did the time go" ....... a beautiful walk down memory lane - This is how the "New SA / the Rainbow Nation" was meant to be ....... if only !!

  • johnny clegg is not white or black, he's a true South African that could over come the mindless boundaries of racism. There for a walking rainbow and insipiration that helped white ppl appreciat the native culture and allowed black ppl to see that not ALL whites wre evil, racist pigs. Everybody else should follow in his example. from one white Zulu to another. Amandla siZulu

  • this song takes me back to my childhood in South Africa and brings tears to my eyes

  • I'm an 18 year old college student, instead of buying food I'm buying this LP...

I can't help it, I love Johnny Clegg! Such an amazing man, and performer. Lucky enough to see him last week in Portland, he has such a presence on stage, it's incredible.

No singer, songwriter, or band from my generation will ever measure up.

Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus? Are you kidding me?

  • I was little when I heard Juluka in Los Angeles growing up and then later Savuka. I thought it was pretty awesome. Because of Johnny Clegg, many of us enjoyed Paul Simon's Graceland while others were calling foul. This group was a real post-punk kick in every racist's arse.

  • the white zulu

  • I am proud to be Johnny's nephew, and I've been slowly uploading his entire discography to YouTube, including his rarest album, New World Survivor, which had a limited edition of 2000 autographed copies. Check it out on my channel

  • Johnny Clegg (with Juluka or Savuka), PJ Powers, Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Margaret Singana, Cinema, Ballyhoo, Ricardo - South Africa had awesome music in the 80s (I'm not sure if Ballyhoo were 70s or 80s but Man on the Moon was one of the awesomest South African songs ever!!!). Yo - anybody else from Durban on this post?

  • Racism schmacism. Yaaaaawwwwwwwwwnnnnnn!

  • This song always brings tears to my eyes.

  • This makes me pine for home more then anything else. I wish I could be in my country and call it mine again, but I take solace in the fact that we all continue to exude the spirit of Africa. Our home will always be in strife: it's the way of the land, but the goodness that Africa is, the will to love this earth and everyone in it, will ALWAYS live on through us. I may be "Australian", but my blood will never change from being African, no matter what a piece of paper says. I am African for life.

  • @shesperfect469 AMEN I could not have said it better !!!

  • @shesperfect469 AMEN I could not have said it better !!!!

  • Johnny was ahead of times

  • Ah yes....I still have this vinyl album. 'Almost wore the grooves off it, and was very lucky to see Juluka at Massey Hall, Toronto. We all danced - we couldn't help it. A great band.

  • Johnny Clegg rocks!!!

  • Makes me long for home

  • I miss as Africa. :-(

  • Man these guys are so cool!!!Johnny Clegg and his lot are awesome! if they can work together as black and white united why cant the rest of the nation do that! these guys make me proud to say im south african, white and not racist! I believe that one day there will be piece and love amoung all cultures in S.A once everyone realises that skin colour does not change the colour of ones blood, heart, mind and soul, we are all human with beating hearts, feelings and emotions, no excuses for racism!

  • Forgetting the political aspect; his concerts are unbelievable! I was never so worn out in my life then after 90 minutes dancing with Jaluka. Just never so involved with the music and that includes Springsteen concerts.

  • and by the way two people who dislike this vid are seirous fag's!

    word!

  • man this is epic. tellin ya... white zooloos & band. one love

  • NOW THIS IS THE SHIT!!!!!!!!!!

  • culture is relative......and i want to have sex with pretty much all of these guys...

  • culture is relative

  • Surely SA's greatest ever singer! During apartheid, SA produced awesome singers of different races. Ricardo's song "Daddy", Brenda Fassie's "Weekend Special", Margaret Singana's song for Shaka Zulu, Cinema's "Fire of Love" and numerous songs by Johnny - I loved them all.

  • where does colour fit into it guys? come on we're over that now get a life!!

  • simcha. cool that Johnny is your uncle. I met him in 1982 when he and Siphu brought Juluka to Washington DC. They were banned in DC because of a blanket ban on EVERYTHING South African. About 50 of us young musicians working with a prominent (black) lawyer and some activists got the ban lifted about 6 hours before show time, and saw the best show ever. If you are in touch please remind him of the story and tell him that we remember him and Siphu.

  • USUTHU!!!!

  • great song the man is a legend

  • Legend. That is all.

  • Johnny & Juluka were such great performers ~ I was lucky enough to go to a few of their concerts back in the 80s and they truly were amazing. After concerts he had time for his fans and was just like a regular guy.

Fantastic music, I hear these songs and I'm back in Africa again.

  • love johnny have for eons.havebeen friends with him for just about as long.

  • Goddamn it! I'm Johnny Clegg's nephew, and i'm proud of it. he doesn't need you to defend him, or criticize him. the one thing that really get me and my family annoyed is that every single one of Johnny's songs on youtube always spark political racial discussions. that's what he fought against all these years. please stop it. these comments are entirely unrelated to the video, and are in bad taste.

  • @simcha23 that's cool that he is your unce...you know for a black kid living in the south of the U.S., Juluku was very inspiring to see on early Mtv. Mtv rarely played anything African, let along "white" and "black" people.

  • awuzwe bafana bam!

  • Not a big fan of THIS song, but Jaluka's Scatterlings Of Africa is one of my favorite albums ever.

  • wena we zulu!!!!!!!!!

  • fuck yeah 420 huff jenkem everyday

  • It's raining hard here in Sydney now and it doesn't feel like home :(

  • The most awsome song having a beach party in Plet

  • Beautiful, Proud to be African

  • About 10/15 years too early, sadly.

  • I like this song, but I prefer his stuff with Savuka.

  • Awesome.....you go Johnny

  • Awesome!

  • ahhh , listened to this on my euro road trip, reminds me of all the good times. . . south african till i die!

  • If you liked Juluka and the South African 80's rock scene in general and have any memories or photos to share, how about joining the Facebook group "South African 80's Music Scene"?

  • The best ever!God bless!

  • Ashame racial controversy mars humanity. I'm white but this is quite pleasant on the ears.

We all need to get along & enjoy this song. Peace.

  • Kaninha87 you are a cross-breed between a baboon and a hyena. You attitude stinks mate!!!

  • Kaninha87 - Are you so fecking stupid as not to know who Johnny Clegg is and what he stands for. You ignorant prick!! Get your facts straight before you make judgements on people. Johnny was one of the only white South Africans to make a stand against the government at the height of the apartheid era. He is considered a legend by most South Africans, black or white, So feck off Kaninha87. you suck!!

  • @justinvanzyl -Are you Irish by any chance? I'm seriously just curious.

  • @Bimfirestarter

I'm South African but now live in Ireland? Why do you ask? Must've been the "fecking"??

  • kaninha87, wena ipipie mfene! ophou kak praat en fok weg van die plek af as jy nie gooie dinge kan se vir n land wat jy weet fokol van! die mense in die lietjie is legends in SA! read up on ur African history before making kak comments like that my CHINA, now VOETSEK jou drol!

  • why do people who know nothing about a certain topic always talk the bigget crap

Kaninha87 pull your head out of your arse and find out about south africaand its history before shooting off your mouth.

  • Hmmm... the guy singing has a PHD in African Studies... was/is regarded as a hero by the black majority for his role in the struggle against apartheid and white minority rule. In fact Johnny Clegg is singing a Zulu song translated to English for all Africans. Your racism shines through! Until you have been to Southern Africa and felt the African rain on your face you should perhaps remain silent about things African...

  • I lectured at the University of the Witwatersrand while Clegg was there. I don't think he ever completed his degree work. He was, however, awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Wits a few years ago.

  • @dogvillaman Jonny Clegg is a legend - the man is all soul for Africa - why do some people try to degrade and reduce a person's great honest love for something by saying stupid things like "er, I think he did not complete his degree" WHO THE **** cares ?! Look at what he stands for ! Good on ya dogvillaman - Clegg is a beaut !

  • oh and the clowning you refer to is some traditional urban Zulu dress...

  • Ah, so an american thinks he knows about south africa! Dude listen cearfully... there are undecustaed kids in SA who know more about you're own counrty and most Americans will ever know... know why? because american know nothing about the world or even their own counrty outside of the sate they are born in....before you comment again think really long about what you going to say, before you look like an idiot! again!

  • Ghouza, you're quite opinionated, aren't you? Don't judge Americans by the foolish ones. Just like in SA and around the world, the wise keep quite. Now into which group do you think you belong? You're mistaken in more ways than you'll ever understand, but it's unnecessary to get into that. You won't get it. Please keep your ideas to your foolish self.

  • @Giashandler yes, however it is based on experience....I've delt with alot of american's who have come to SA adn who have never left america... I've done internet support for american's and for UK most south african's are more educated, and know more about america than americans do...we know more about our own country than most americans know about their's... bare in mind I deal with idiot south africans, american and british on a daily basis....what do you do? what do you know about SA?

  • @Kaninha87 You suck man

  • @Kaninha87 Great Vid and ZERO clowning. Johnny clegg fitted in so well because he was willing to embrace other cultures, Namely the Zulu Culture. Dissing other people's culture makes you a Rascist twonk. I'm sure you wouldn't like me dissing your culture but i'm also sure you won't tell us without knowing the tide will turn. Do us all a favour and keep your Filth to yourself.

    BTW Johnny clegg Rocks!!!

  • ps this song was recorded in the early 80's...

  • 24 years have past since I left SA..wish I could go back and visit Cape Town once more...

  • 10 Years for me - I also miss it

  • Eight, wish I could visit as well.

  • When i go to work in the van my boss ian...Allways plays this song and sings it in the car its sooo funnyy now i love hearing it.

    -Gross-

  • Why do the Africans always blame the whiteman for everything that goes wrong?Funny to think that there isnt ONE country in Africa that have a proper democracy or. Every time a white person talks in disfavour an black man he is a racist, but when a blackman does the same to a white man, thats legitimate? Dont understand this

  • Just listen to the music and stop hating on people.

  • oh christ... grow up. "hater"? where do you get that? This guy was ASKING A QUESTION. He wasn't hurting you, you stupid little brat.

  • I'm telling someone to just listen to the music and not bring up race. I'm not name calling like you are...

  • ??? I was name calling. That's right. So what? What? Is that ILLEGAL???

  • No and neither is what I said so let's just leave it at that...

  • Actually, he wasn't asking a question, except incidentally.

    Why do ... - question.

...the Africans always blame the whiteman for everything that goes wrong?

Statement, and one a reasonable person might consider untrue.

Funny to think that there isnt ONE country in Africa that have a proper democracy.

Statement, and likewise debatable, or laughable if you intend to hold up Britian or America as "proper" democracies.

  • Dry up you stupid old bore and just enjoy the music. Africans DON'T always blame the white man and are really critical of themselves, just as we are (or most of us, anyway, though not you). Talk about racists - you're one. Africa's great.

  • Africa destroys africa...why because its Africa

  • We could say the same about many other countries in the world....And i think, Africa has been "helped" in this destruction, if you see what i mean.....

  • @Raymantis1 Europeans destroyed Africa

  • The best ever!God bless!

    from Spain

  • this is one of my all time favourite juluka songs..

  • sure does make one homesick for african plains..so sad

  • This makes me so homesick for South Africa

  • Same! i was born there

  • Wish all the crap would just stop so we can live in peace, I miss home and all the good times.

  • Me too. Never goes away, does it?

  • You never really get over leaving Africa, do you? You can try, but really we can never leave. Go well.
