@sblackmun Lucky you! The Met now has an online database (it won't let me post the link) through which I learn that Lisa della Casa (!) was Octavian, and none other than Rothenberger was Sophie! With Otto Edelmann as Ochs, Mignon Dunn as Annina, and Sandor Konya as the Italian tenor!!
Que ces gens sont mignons, cet air tient du miracle, il n´est pas terrestre il est céleste. Remarquable exécution. Merci a Strauss.
both make me crying. its simply perfect. Heaven sake we have this film to watch it over and over again....such beauty in singing and acting breath taking...when people are enthusiastic about former opera-days here is the proof..now i understand why people sleep in front of the ticketcorner to get some...ma deepest respect for the ladies rothenberger and jurinac
Amen... very well said. I'm a Cellist and playing this opera was page after page of barely playable music... but what gorgeous singing...a real treat for the audience... for the orchestra, not so much.
What a pitty, that the original cast from the performance at the Salzburg Festival
(Lisa della Casa as >Marschallin) ist not in the film. Walter LEGGE insisted on his wife E. Schwarzkopf. And della Casa was pushed a side. But she demonstrated character: She did never come back to sing in Salzburg. Right she was.
I would also add, I think that Jurinac is now my favourite Octavian as well. Octavian is a terribly difficult part - one reason that he's present in nearly every major scene of this opera. Jurinac's vocal technique is secure, and she's blessed with a warm timbre and a 'floating' quality. Her characterisation is flawless, as well. I can see here why Sophie and the Marschallin would fall in love with him (played by Jurinac)!
You are right. She was super, but Lucia Popp was not worse. She had nearly the same timbre and her acting was quiete close to the acting of A. Rothenberger.
ich habe die aufnahme noch als schallplatte komplett und gefällt mir immer wieder besonders diese art der instenierung , nicht die modernen . das war eben oper ....
Enchanting ! Such wonderful singers, Rothenburg and Jurinac ! I think they make for the perfect respective Sophie and Octavian, and Schwarzkopf makes a fine Marschallin, for the perfect (in my opinion) main cast for 'Der Rosenkavalier'.
Although Rosenberger never lost the beauty of her voice even into her forties, you can tell just how light and floating it must have been in her youth. Enchanting!
Thank you so much for this posting. This scene from this film is an incandescent memory from over 40 years ago. Thank God it is as I remember it, with AR making some of the most beautiful sounds I will ever hear.
The Sophie came in early at "euer liebden"...but otherwise, beautiful! But it annoys me that she sang that wrong! Especially since it's a track they recorded beforehand...couldn't they fix that?
Heavenly singing. And I was fortunate enough to hear and see them in Vienna as a young music student.

At the curtain calls the audience sitting in the balconies went crazy, tore up their programs and threw the pieces down into the orchestra.

I was present at Schwartzkopf's debut at the Met. Does anyone remember who sang Sophie and the Rosenkavalier?
And yes, it was a completely amazing evening! Strauss's music at the end is perfect!

I think so, too. Innocence and grace, with an elegant manner about her - perfect for Sophie !
