The one thing I don't understand is why the farmers don't simply move their homes to the other side of the river and live closer to the farmland -- although the mere thought of having to haul all their shit across this thing is enough to give me vertigo.

@WesThorburn there are different villages on each side, so the bridge connects the different areas/villages with each other and the main lifeline - the Karakoram Highway. Farming land is very rare in those rough mountains, so you have to use every valley as efficient as possible. It is no easy place to make a living.
