  • That is some insane guitar.

  • The Art Tatum of guitar.

  • i need to stop being lazy, buy another guitar, cut my nails and learn to play the blues...

  • this piece is called "shuffle rag", Stefan Grossman says that at least

  • House rent stomp I think is the name, but sounds this tune Used to try to play.

  • Bill's 'Shuffle Rag' shows how good he was and his style has never been emulated by anyone even to this day! Pure genius and natural talent!

  • Cool,Thumbs up

  • ..I still can`t get over it...that`s just not from this WORLD !!!

  • Wow, I am literally jaw smacked by this incredible talent !!!! I have just learned some new Blues piece, and here I go thinkin`I´m doin half well....and then I hear THIS !!!! Awesome, totally awesome !!!!! -But I´m hanging in there,hahaha...

  • Bill Broonzy born June 26, 1898

    Happy Birthday

  • The name of this tune is Shuffle Rag not See See Rider!

  • fantastic tune - first heard this 30 years ago and just posted my version of it now!!

  • CooL

  • Glorious piece of music. You just want it to go on and on.

  • c est grand

  • c est grand

  • An English guitarist of some skill John Renbourn once wrote on an album liner note he started out trying to play like Big Bill Broonzy. And he's still trying.

  • This is not see see Rider (sorry Davo) Listen to the Studs Terkel recording , about 40 years ago, I have it on vinyl, This is Guitar Shuffle (Broonzy's words) . see see rider is a SONG ! Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee share the recording and play the wonderful Fox Chase, a masterful piece of harp playing.

  • @banjodag Ce morceau s'appelle "SHUFFLE RAG".

  • Big Bill got a lot of mileage out of this tune. He recorded it under different titles, and even under aliases for different record labels. I've recorded a version which is on my channel, where I've called it 'Guitar Shuffle Rag', which is the name I first heard it under. It's a great tune and fun to play.

    Gary

  • Thanks for putting this on!!!

  • @mrbrucebarham

he didn't write c.c rider its was written by a chick in early 20's called ma Rainey

  • He was fine guitarist and writer...just mint by anybody's standardsAnd as for see see rider he wrote that tune too, hate all the pop versions...i like his lyric best, but of course when I do it people still are so....hmmm, mediazed they cant think past elvis....kinda frustrating

  • @MrBruceBarham "people still are so....hmmm, mediazed they cant think past Elvis....kinda frustrating" ...well friend this is a good song, but if you spend time trying to think past Elvis I can understand why you'd be frustrated. Music is a tool for setting a mood, making emotion. Specific praise or criticism of the structure of the song itself might be more useful masturbation than comparisons to a dead king.

  • @oregonghostwave Ha well you miss my point..I dont try to compare it to elvis, but I do perform for a living and people, that is, audiences, are used to elvis' version more so that those of us that have an eclectic taste and a broadened sense of musical influences such as you and i, and they dont always react to new musics that invade their sense of definiton based on what they are used to having heard..I do not know if I am clear at what im trying to say...i do Bronzys version , not elvis

  • @MrBruceBarham I see (see) now. They are radically different versions. Perhaps Elvis should have used a different title, but then he might've gotten flak for pulling a Jimmy Page. I've been Trolling around Youtube picking on the subtler critics I find for a challenge on account 0 dollars and no sense anger... but an internet connection. You play Portland with this stuff send me a Youtube message and I'll listen outside the door if there's a cover... ; )

  • He was fine guitarist and writer...just mint by anybody's standards

  • Beautiful, just beautiful

  • is this d flat open tuning?

  • @Fruscianteistheman

It's probably played in C (most of it is very similar to "Long Tall Mama"). Could be his guitar was tuned a half step high.

  • Yeah - actually it is See See Rider ... available on iTunes - as is Guitar Shuffle

  • i wish i could play the guitar half as good as him

  • ma come cazzo suonaaaaa!!!!!!!!!! wowowowowowowowwowowowowowow

  • @follilolli pensa...sveglirsi una mattina e saper suonare così...morirebbero dìinvidia in tanti...ciao

  • A bit of Hey Hey, a bit of Long Tall Mama and a few other of Bill's favourite licks thrown in. I wouldn't fret too much over naming it. To me it just sounds like Bill havin fun and as usual giving our ears a treat in the process.

  • Superb! You can see why he influenced the KinKs and the Stones so much, as both bands gave him great tributes and deservedly so. Great blues licks!

  • Nothing See See Rider about this; it's Guitar Shuffle. Big Bill did a version of See See Rider, and what a version! Tied for best with Miss. John Hurt's IMO. Bill claims to have learned it directly from the steamboat Captain whom, he also claims, wrote it in 1908. He says he knows for sure it was 1908 because his best mule died that year. Also check out Blind Blake for some more masterful ragtime style playing of a different flavor. Enjoy!

  • @msfingerstyle1 thats right as rain i would have never thought cc rider ive heard a hundred versions before not like this at all

  • Fabulous!!! Timeless--the Real Blues! Thank You!

  • Wow this is great stuff. Listen how the Bass lines and the lead lines are complete. Nobody could play it quite like Big Bill. Amazing playing

  • hi sorry but it's not ccrider but it's the rag shuffle og big bill the title of the video is worse

  • Great fingerpicking! This is straight from the heart , you can feel it :)

What's the name of that weird looking guitar at 1;06?

  • mattie

  • Guitar shuffle by Big Bill.....really fast keeping up stuff here listen to Snooks Eaglen if you want to hear some more quick picking stuff........I like them both but Snooks is my favorite all time finger picker.....

  • Dang, he was like the SRV of his day. Smokin' riffs dude... tearin' it up! Thanks for sharing

  • This is great but it is not See See Rider, as said before its Guitar Shuffle. I have been waiting a long time to hear it again.

    Thanks

  • It's Guitar Shuffle, it's CC Rider, and a wholew bunch of other titles. Lots of old blues have different titles for the same song, depending on when they were recorded.

  • This is such a nice tune!!! Thanks soo much!!!

  • the best finger picker? maybe!

  • Ohh yeah.

  • Big Bill is possibly the best guitarist ever... He's almost too good to comprehend. I haven't heard anyone recreate his style - not even close.

Thanks for posting this - it's great to hear!

  • @markhaskins

    Davey Graham came pretty close

  • @neutralgray

Yeah for sure, Davey was close but he was never as free flowing as Broonzy

  • I know of three recorded versions of this by Big Bill. This is the best I've heard as he puts in a few more variations. I knew of this version but hadn't heard it for years, thanks for posting! The transcription in Grossmann's book is good but is incomplete. The title is 'Shuffle Rag' and it's a hard job to play it as lively as Broonzy!

  • amazing ..

  • This IS guitar shuffle. Big Bill did a later version of it on a radio show that came out later on record on the XTRA label in the mid 60's. Sonny Terry and Brownie were also on the taped show, with chat between songs etc. You can probably still get it, if you search for old records etc. Stefa Grossman has tabbd it in one of his books (about 30 years ago).Hope this helps re info

  • Look for the clip of Andy Cohen playing this tune here on YT. It's amazing. Furthermore, it gives you a good visual of finger positions.

  • Looks like my earlier comment didn't post. I think this is Shuffle Rag. Great tune.

  • Man alive. All he needs is one guitar.

  • This is wonderful if someone could break this down and share it with me I would be most grateful

  • my Uncle play guitar. He is so gifted he just plays. And we enjoy. this what big bill was playing some thing just come through his fingers. FANTASTIC thanks for posting

  • You can tell from the music that Big Bill knew some good times in his life, despite any other woes he might have had. Great music, superb musicality, makes me think of summer fairs and dancing with a glass of cider, thanks for uploading.

  • WOW! That is some great blues fingerpicking!
