The advert was fine, right up until the guy said: "I couldn't pay the mortgage or the bills."

The reason that the above phrase sounds dodgy is because his accident and his not being able to pay the mortgage are actually two unrelated topics: the reason he can't pay his bills is because he isn't being paid enough in the first place, not because he was crushed by a fork-lift. He would not have been able to pay his bills, regardless of whether or not he had been injured.

The more credible thing to have said, should have been:

"Due to the injuries, I had missed an appointment to pay my mortgage..."

Although that is a bit eccentric to put in an advert, it would sound more logical and more credible as to why he couldn't pay his mortgage or bills due to the injury.
