I've always wondered how Hitler came to power, really, when his ideas were so horrendous. How could anyone hear what he was saying and go along with it? And I've been told by all the history books and teachers that he was a persuasive leader and speech-maker, but I still didn't understand.
But if Adolf was even half the speech-maker that Mario is, I understand now how people followed him.
@kitlarson Search it. In essence, quoting Wikiipedia, "Examples of fair use include commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship."
@Dazza3500 ME! I just heard of him on RACHEL MADDOW....but heard this audio clip years ago. looked him up on WIKI...and of course the F.B.I. tailed him for a decade after he made this powerful speech. MARIO SAVIO (1942-1996)
'The operations of machine so odious that it makes you sick at heart?' Mario Savio, YOU ARE A PRIVILEDGED COLLEGE STUDENT, YOU ASS. You study and read and write, you aren't some poor Cuban who crossed Castro (whom you admired) or some villager murdered by the Viet Cong (whom you also admired) to make an example of.
@stronghurst1 Do you realize that Mario Savio was talking about/supporting free speech? I don't believe his background as a "privileged college student" really matters in this case. I would also be interested in any proof you have of him supporting "Castro... the Viet Cong" or ANY communist parties. Government rests on the shoulders of it's people but the people DON'T HAVE TO support their government if they don't believe in it's policies (censorship/free speech restrictions). Egypt, Libya...
@blazzerm Please. Why always call famous people hypocrite when they take part to those kind of things ? Do you really think they would be ready to give all their money away to be taken seriously ? Would you ? Fame brings money, but also allow them to talk in the name of the poeple and be heard. And about benefitting from a greed culture, LP are fair.
What also stands out in this mid-1960s very memorable oratory, and the accompanying protest, is the sense of "street cred" and dignity that everyone had. Contrast this to many of the protests in the Western world today, both leftist and rightist, which regrettably too often just come off as street-theater farce, even if they do have a significant political impact.

Let's just give this man his due.
@MessengerOfDreams Exactly my point...but very admirable of you to muster two full sentences about yourself (not once mentioning your "causes"). I don't get it.
Why does it seem that most activists have more tendency these days to make it about themselves than their causes (most of whom you have no idea what they really stand for but that they consider themselves activists). I'm not trying to tear you down, these comments just fit that scenario.
Okay people Linkin park are tossers, they always have been. They STOLE this idea from Fear Factory who used this sample years ago in timelessness on the album obsolete. They are more apart of the machine than any metal band out there, the singer was nearly in the back street boys!!He just didn't get in!!!Stealing an idea and pawning it off as your own is lame and destroying the meaning of this speech by a band who doesn't understand the significance of it and just thinks it sounds cool is also lame
@riastradh2 The music industry has a lot of that across many genres, not just dance and rap. As far as rock bands go,LP ain't hard. But what they are is insightful....They have gauged the political climate of both the US and the UK and decided to make a record that was what they wanted, instead of what their fans or industry expect.
It's a call for revolution, and I didn't want to be the one to point it out to someone who makes their point as eloquently as you.
@iankennedy280570 I havent' heard this new album, the emo nu metal crap they have brought out before this means i probably never will,so what if the industry does it alot they are still apart of it ergo they are tossers. Thats hardly insightful, it's been brewing for quite some time.If it meant so much to them they would have stepped up before now, trying to make a quick buck more like.Listen to obsolete, a timeless relevant intelligent record who linkin stole the idea to sample this speech from
@riastradh2 But what are we to do...tons of other bands have done this and Linkin Park is better than them all. But I'm glad you know exactly who understands what. I'm sure they have a deeper understanding of this rant than does some "tosser" on youtube trying to score points for Fear Factory.
@ccrosbie33 It's hard to believe they have listened to fear factory themselves so my assertion that they literally stole the idea is probably right? Also unless your a 14year old emo boy/girl thinking linkin park are so good means you have either very little taste in music or just very little musical knowledge to begin with. regardless of the insults Mario Savio would have turned in his grave at the thought of his an arm of the machine co opting his speech like this,it kind of spits on his memory
@riastradh2 I don't get it. Linkin Park probably wouldn't have listened to Fear Factory -- therefore they surely stole this? Please.
As for Savio turning in is grave over Linkin Park? Get real. The words of the world's most passionate and emotionally unstable sales clerk has been a product for longer than Che Guevara t-shirts. Okay, so you don't like Linkin Park we get it - who cares. But does using Savio's timeless words make them any less relevant? Maybe time to improve your taste, pal.
@ccrosbie33 It's obvious I meant haven't instead of have. don't be a tool. And it's far more likely they did and stole the idea, you can't deny that with much credibility Also trying to reduce him to a "unstable salesclerk" doesn't make linkin park any more credible. He did something most people including you and linkin park will never do,so give the man some respect. also how a commodity? I haven't seen his words on a t shirt like Che?
@riastradh2 His words are sold in songs DAILY -- like how you're arguing! How the hell do you function mentally? Yes, Savio is a product, too -- just not t-shirts. No, I'm not 14, and your categorical judgement of LP fans leads to me to beileve you don't quite get the whole Savio movement anyway. Are you yet another person trying to pose as an enlightening liberal -- exactly what our society needs more of.
By the way, I'm curious, do you even know what Mario is opposing in this clip?
@ccrosbie33 Where are his words sold daily?I think your bullshitting. My argument is sound and since you haven't been able to refute either of my two points kind of proves it.how does me saying linkin park are shit mean I "don't quite get the whole Savio movement" since i've explained myself in that regard loads of times and you still couldn't say anything against it?I don't believe in the liberal/conservative paradigm.Wow u looked at wikipedia and u think ur smart!! LOL fucking emo kids....
@riastradh2 I've refuted your argument already, how have you missed it? What a sad little person who just sees the world as he believes in his own little head how things are. You don't see the irony or dilution in Savio's words being sold daily? You believe instinctively that anyone who states a fact gets it from Wikipedia or who likes Linkin Park is Emo or a teenager -- and worse yet, you laugh at your own words while being wrong on all accounts. Don't write back -- you're a sad waste of time.
@ccrosbie33 .yawn, no I had two points on my first comment and you haven't come close to refuting them.ur sentence is rambling but all reality is in ur head, perception is reality. You haven't proven the "savios words sold daily" at all kid,you just said it,that doesn't make it true. Also ya i think you just looked up wikipedia, you sound like the type,if your not an emo kid and like linkin park it's way funnier LOL When did i laugh at my own words? Are u just typing now for the sake of it? FAIL LOL
@ccrosbie33 Also I wasn't posting because i don't like them,I was posting to point out they are so shit they had to rob someone elses idea to be "relevant" as you put it.And they are destroying the spirit of this speech because they are as much a gear of the machine as you can get musically.I haven't seen anything you've posted that can refute those two basic points. But hey you're a Linkin park fan, u must b right??After u get your first period you might start listening to good music!!
as a matter of fact, this vid had quite some views before LP aswell (if not for the greatness of the speech then for Fear Factorys Timelessness intro...)
@TheRugbyfullback Thumbs up if Mario Savio and the free speech movement and the Grateful Dead and the Diggers and Allen Ginsburg and Hunter S. Thompson and Woodstock and Altmont and Ken Kesey and a bus called Further and Wavy Gravy and Neal Cassidy the Acid Tests and Vietnam war protests and People's Park and the dawning of the counter culture in America brought you here.
Rage Against The Machine's video Know Your Enemy ends with Mario Savio's famous speech. There are several Know Your Enemy video's so pick the one that begins with G. W. Bush speaking about a New World Order. I can't think a band that's done more for Human Rights than RAGE. The Beatles probably come close with the "peace movement".
In the interests of the "who did it first" arguments, I'd like to point out that this was on the album "Operation Phoenix" (Fat Wreck Chords, 1999) by punk/melodic hardcore band Good Riddance, well before Linkin Park's used it. I'm curious to know what other groups have used. Whatever the case, the message and the sentiment is moving. Kinda makes you, I dunno, go out and do something about the things most of us just bitch about blogs and whatnot.
Oh shit! Now I remember the FF song! According to Wikipedia FF had GR beat by a year. Interesting how both bands, coming from drastically different genres, having nothing in common but their being from the SoCal area, cut tracks so close together with the same soundbite. I wonder if the 25th anniversary of the speech and historical events surrounding it had anything to do with seeding the idea for them. IF you haven't, please look it up on Wikipedia. The story is truly inspiring.
NO Rage Against the Machine gave this speech new life not Linkin Park. I love Linkin Park always have always will but they still trying to find themselves.
This signaled the beginning of the end of Higher Education and modern Adulthood. Now you have students getting course credit for protesting to save instructors' jobs. Using the Power Fist symbol and dipping their hand in red paint. And students care more about Psychology and the sexual proclivities of Adolescents than they do about the U.S. Constitution. They make a real difference because college budgets still get cut. Fight the Power!
an awesome, powerful speech.. especially toward the end.. i hope it lives forever .. never forgotten as a testament to the human spirit and a reminder.. a wake up cry to the masses to take action when its needed...
I don't know why people get worked up about Linkin Park putting part of this speech on their song. The song is about rising up against the owners of "the machine," and if anything the band is trying to get people to appreciate the history, and emotional weight of Mario Savio's speaking abilities. Either way you look at it exposure is something a lot of people need, especially here in America where a lot of people have lost contact with their history.
I wish there was activism like this today. Now most people are sitting idley and sedated while the top 1% steal everything that we have, and everything that those in the past have worked and died for.
Stupid. Does it matter if Linkin Park used this speech? Really, does it matter? The fact of the matter is, I looked this speech up because of them. And in a way, they've educated me and made me discover who he was and what he did and what he meant. That's why they put this in their song. To educate the younger people who were denied the opportunity to learn about this man in a textbook. To learn of a man who the government probably doesn't want us to know about. I commend LP and thank them.
the government is still trying to stop free speech see what is happening to Julian Heicklen and how the just-us dept has charged him with jury tampering for passing out free info on YOUR RIGHT to jury nullification ,which is the ultimate check and balance on govt. for as a juror you can judge the facts AND the law itself,if its unfair vote for aquittal. This sets precedent that under Stare Decisis the courts must follow,if you don't like a law change it in the courts. Julian is 78 and a real man
The guy in the background kind of looks like Malcolm X, and if Malcolm X is in the background, that means that this guy was LEGIT back then. He is and still is legit, but I mean if Malcolm X is there, that meant that he really was someone during that time. His words mean so much, good for him.
And if not for Linkin Park, I totally would not have the respect for Mario Savio like I do now. He's truly someone who should be in our American History books (he isn't at the present time).
London After Midnight had a clip from this speech in their song "Feeling Facist" long before Linkin Park had it in theirs. Say what you want about people using samples from speeches like this but for some that might be the only way we get any exposure to them and the travesties they're speaking against.

@ccrosbie33 It's hard to believe they have listened to fear factory themselves so my assertion that they literally stole the idea is probably right? Also unless your a 14year old emo boy/girl thinking linkin park are so good means you have either very little taste in music or just very little musical knowledge to begin with. regardless of the insults Mario Savio would have turned in his grave at the thought of his an arm of the machine co opting his speech like this,it kind of spits on his memory
riastradh2 8 months ago
@riastradh2 I don't get it. Linkin Park probably wouldn't have listened to Fear Factory -- therefore they surely stole this? Please.
As for Savio turning in is grave over Linkin Park? Get real. The words of the world's most passionate and emotionally unstable sales clerk has been a product for longer than Che Guevara t-shirts. Okay, so you don't like Linkin Park we get it - who cares. But does using Savio's timeless words make them any less relevant? Maybe time to improve your taste, pal.
ccrosbie33 8 months ago
@ccrosbie33 It's obvious I meant haven't instead of have. don't be a tool. And it's far more likely they did and stole the idea, you can't deny that with much credibility Also trying to reduce him to a "unstable salesclerk" doesn't make linkin park any more credible. He did something most people including you and linkin park will never do,so give the man some respect. also how a commodity? I haven't seen his words on a t shirt like Che?
riastradh2 8 months ago
@riastradh2 His words are sold in songs DAILY -- like how you're arguing! How the hell do you function mentally? Yes, Savio is a product, too -- just not t-shirts. No, I'm not 14, and your categorical judgement of LP fans leads to me to beileve you don't quite get the whole Savio movement anyway. Are you yet another person trying to pose as an enlightening liberal -- exactly what our society needs more of.
By the way, I'm curious, do you even know what Mario is opposing in this clip?
ccrosbie33 8 months ago
@ccrosbie33 Where are his words sold daily?I think your bullshitting. My argument is sound and since you haven't been able to refute either of my two points kind of proves it.how does me saying linkin park are shit mean I "don't quite get the whole Savio movement" since i've explained myself in that regard loads of times and you still couldn't say anything against it?I don't believe in the liberal/conservative paradigm.Wow u looked at wikipedia and u think ur smart!! LOL fucking emo kids....
riastradh2 8 months ago
@riastradh2 I've refuted your argument already, how have you missed it? What a sad little person who just sees the world as he believes in his own little head how things are. You don't see the irony or dilution in Savio's words being sold daily? You believe instinctively that anyone who states a fact gets it from Wikipedia or who likes Linkin Park is Emo or a teenager -- and worse yet, you laugh at your own words while being wrong on all accounts. Don't write back -- you're a sad waste of time.
ccrosbie33 8 months ago
@ccrosbie33 .yawn, no I had two points on my first comment and you haven't come close to refuting them.ur sentence is rambling but all reality is in ur head, perception is reality. You haven't proven the "savios words sold daily" at all kid,you just said it,that doesn't make it true. Also ya i think you just looked up wikipedia, you sound like the type,if your not an emo kid and like linkin park it's way funnier LOL When did i laugh at my own words? Are u just typing now for the sake of it? FAIL LOL
riastradh2 8 months ago
@ccrosbie33 Also I wasn't posting because i don't like them,I was posting to point out they are so shit they had to rob someone elses idea to be "relevant" as you put it.And they are destroying the spirit of this speech because they are as much a gear of the machine as you can get musically.I haven't seen anything you've posted that can refute those two basic points. But hey you're a Linkin park fan, u must b right??After u get your first period you might start listening to good music!!

Shut up about LP, this isn't about LP this is about the system the system that we all work for the structure that stands on us, the little guys, back.
This is about whats perceived as wrong and what we would do to stop this machine from continuing on.

I have Fear Factory to thank for learning of this. It's the basis around "Timelessness" on their "Obsolete" CD.
Arguably one of the best speeches.

Rage Against The Machine's video Know Your Enemy ends with Mario Savio's famous speech. There are several Know Your Enemy video's so pick the one that begins with G. W. Bush speaking about a New World Order. I can't think a band that's done more for Human Rights than RAGE. The Beatles probably come close with the "peace movement".
showtime0824 11 months ago
In the interests of the "who did it first" arguments, I'd like to point out that this was on the album "Operation Phoenix" (Fat Wreck Chords, 1999) by punk/melodic hardcore band Good Riddance, well before Linkin Park's used it. I'm curious to know what other groups have used. Whatever the case, the message and the sentiment is moving. Kinda makes you, I dunno, go out and do something about the things most of us just bitch about blogs and whatnot.
HandiCripple666 11 months ago

Way to go, cutting off the end of this beautiful speech.
SlugChristie 11 months ago
This signaled the beginning of the end of Higher Education and modern Adulthood. Now you have students getting course credit for protesting to save instructors' jobs. Using the Power Fist symbol and dipping their hand in red paint. And students care more about Psychology and the sexual proclivities of Adolescents than they do about the U.S. Constitution. They make a real difference because college budgets still get cut. Fight the Power!

besides, it was in my song 2 years before Linkin Park did it lol
Elextacytheband 11 months ago
I don't know why people get worked up about Linkin Park putting part of this speech on their song. The song is about rising up against the owners of "the machine," and if anything the band is trying to get people to appreciate the history, and emotional weight of Mario Savio's speaking abilities. Either way you look at it exposure is something a lot of people need, especially here in America where a lot of people have lost contact with their history.

Im not giving full credit to Linkin Park. I am a fan, but I just thank them for leading me to this.

I wish there was activism like this today. Now most people are sitting idley and sedated while the top 1% steal everything that we have, and everything that those in the past have worked and died for.
Pizzinator13 1 year ago 3

SodgleBodgle 1 year ago
it would have been a good speech if he'd been talking about something truly evil like social security.
andrelebaron 1 year ago
London After Midnight had a clip from this speech in their song "Feeling Facist" long before Linkin Park had it in theirs. Say what you want about people using samples from speeches like this but for some that might be the only way we get any exposure to them and the travesties they're speaking against.
