Transatlantic Sessions is, from what I understand, a show that was produced by the BBC. There are many great songs from three separate sessions. Hopefully there will be many more. They combine world class musicians from many countries to produce excellent music. I think there is another show called Scottish Sessions - at least I think that is the name. Many of the same people. Excellent post.
TRANSATLANTIC SESSIONS is a TV prog from Scotland,it`s musicians, singers from Scotland,USA,Ireland and Canada all playing or doing their thing in an old house in Perthshire,Scotland, the DVDs are all available now but failing that just type in TRANSATLANTIC SESSIONS in the search box here and you can see them all.
@jaycon99 "Transatlantic Sessions" is a BBC Alba TV series for Scotland. The tunes last around 30 minutes. The sessions were produced in 1995/ 1997/ 2007 and 2009. This here is a very old one, maybe TS 1 or TS 2. The musicians look very young. The musicians are from Scotland, Ireland, England and the US bluegrass scene. TS 3 is available at DVD and 2 CD set. We wait for TS 4 now, it was on air in late 2009.
The first reel is "The North Shore " from Cape Breton and the last is " The Prince of Wales Reel " from William Ross's book of 1885. Not sure about the rest!
The second reel is from Iain MacDonald's pen : Ann(e) MacKechnie's favourite. a great tune ! The third is on Allan MacDonald's and Margaret stewart cd but I can't remember its name.

when will you realize that pipes are NOT melodic! maybe i'm just not used to the sound....but it basically sounds like a buncha racket to me. i prefer a 'rolling' fiddle/violin for that part of a song. leave the pipes for sad laments and powerful war songs.
Are you on crack? it's a different kind of melody to a piano or violin, for sure, but they have a rhythmic passion to them that no other instrument can match, save possibly the bodhrain. They're the most stirring instrument out there, bar none.
@jaksspring97 , your problem is with the tunes, not the instrument. Some reels are rhythmic in nature than melodic. These tunes would sound similarly "unmelodic" to your ear on any instrument. The principal requirement of dance music is that it be danceable, not that it have a strong hummable melody.
I agree with you BonDonnell. Back home in Nova Scotia it's very common to have piano/guitar/pipes cèilidh combos and I think they really work well together. I think they refer to the piano work as "chording"?
Please view my celtic channel for traditional, modern music in all the celtic languages, and dance, culture, history and more from all our celtic cousins :)
Wonderful clip. Met Iain MacDonald in Perth Austrlia when with the Battlefield Band many years ago. A very quiet and talented man. Have just purchased his CD " The First Harvest ".

This set could well do without that very annoying piano-spoils it

Ooooh, I beg to differ...only complaint is that the mandolin isn't accentuated a bit more, especially from 2:04 on (a la the studio track)

What's the name of the last tune which the piper plays??

"The unaffordable house band..."
Great stuff! That's how Pipes should sound, not the "Heedrum Hodrum" nonsense that the tourists lap up.
