that was a well built model, they had it positioned so when they knew it was about to fail that the blades wouldnt have hurt anyone. its quite amazing how fast they get before they fail though. but for people who feel like its money down the toilet, notice the first stalk of the support beam is perfectly straight and in tact. that is a very salvageable site.
they have been putting alot of these up in the Lafayette Indiana area one is only about 100 yards from I-65 feels a little strange driving by it so close to the highway. They do have a brake system so this should not happen.
@fuzzybunny1972 It was due to the braking system faulting and activating to fast. Thats why its easier to put these in load shutdown then to just slam the brake.
what happens is one blade breaks and the propeller becomes unbalanced and it flies apart. try turning on a fan without one blade. if it will get started at all, it will be unbalanced and tip over.
Because when a wind turbine's brakes fail... how do you suppose you would go about stopping it? Video evidence is a great way of observing the failure and determining a problem.
the stand is made of steal how can wind break steal

I've seen wind turbines go into overspeeds when the tips of the blades broke the sound barrier. Recurring: "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom..."
One overspeed went on for 6 hours before the machine threw a 42 foot blade a 1/4 mile. Needless to say, we watched all this from well upwind!

One day, when you get old enough, you might learn how to spell "VW"!
And learn not to comment one something in a language you do not understand!

@rewandy5 the wings of modern wind turbines turn 45° so the wind makes them stop.
