  • JT, that's one of the best pieces on YouTube. Definitely a real recording.

  • pops would be proud to see his boy sing his song. Great song. nice cover.

  • You've been a musician for 40 years, if you haven't learned what presence is in that time - retire.

  • The torch has been handed over.

  • @opiumrebel Are you kidding me? Fucking use your heart.

  • @1lofoten

have your opinion I have mine.

  • Saw Robert Plant and Allison Kraus at San Barbara Bowl and when Plant sung this song it just stole the show.

  • chip off the old block !

  • Wow. Chills & tears from me JT! Amazing how much u are able to sound both like YOU & your dad at same time! Thanks so much for this.

  • @banjodawgg Doesn't sound shit like his Father. You ignorant donkey. This little guy is a fucking scarecrow.

  • @1lofoten Well, I am Banjodawgg & I Did NOT say that....!!!! Ampersand bDawgg did. sigh.

  • @1lofoten

@banjodawgg is NOT ME, I'm plain Banjodawgg & Love Townes & his son, who sings & plays w/the soul of his dad!

  • @1lofoten You're obviously a troll. I'm a professional musician of 40yrs, Townes was one my main influences. This is absurd that you'd say that & u r the ignorant one.

  • I sure wish the kid would cut a record. The world needs more music like this.

  • he's not a pantera groupie.. he was just a freakin stagehand..

  • Check out the bandana on the dude with the shades you Pantera fans!

  • I llike the duality between JT and Van Zandt. Soooo different in the mode of function but so talented.

  • JT cut my hair one night at the Catus Cafe he said it was for fishing lures.Swiss army knife in the hands of a ingin.Love this this version but Calvin Russell doing it is to real.

  • I bet thats townes J-200.

  • @gymhourfee It sure is, same on that Townes played Blaze's Blue's on on the European Tour

  • @probinson1337 - Good to know....It would be a crime for anyone else to own it......

  • @gymhourfee Technically, it's Blaze Foley's J-200, the one that Townes "joked" about digging up Blaze to get the pawn ticket for. Since Towne's death it's been cared for and loved by JT, Steve Earle, Gurf Morlix, and Lucinda Williams.

  • @probinson1337 and you know, that was actually Blaze's Guitar, the one that was in the pawnshop when he died, and yes, Townes and 3 other un-named to protect the guilty folks took a backhoe and dug him up so Townes could get the ticket and thus the guitar, he said Blaze's Blues was already in the guitar trying to get out, Emmy Lou has had it at times (and also owns its twin) Todd Snider also plays an identical same year model one

  • Speechless .... Wow !!!!

  • Nice, I like it, you have both talent and fell for the music. I think it would be nice to hear more.

  • Superb JT. Your dad speaking through you. I love this!

  • wow. sounds like the old man. maybe he wouldn't want to hear that, but to my mind, that's a good thing. great version!

  • I wish this video were inbeddable

  • what a beautiful song.

  • That was so beautiful. Unreal.

  • The guy next to him... Pantera veteran!!! haha

  • Hell yeah, haha. Looks like a Pantera roadie. Man, I think he's wearing a Willie Nelson shirt too, I think I have the same shirt, haha.

  • @jabuhrer1 It looks like Blaze's brother or son or something.

  • @GIMMEADOLLAR1 Hell, he looks like a clone of his Dad, same lanky walk, his voice will never sound the same unless to takes to drinkin as much as Townes, so let's hope not

  • @jabuhrer1 the guy next to him wasnt a pantera roadie. He was a stagehand for willie tho and a few other austin locals. He was my girlfriends dad.

  • @yoududude07 - CHLOE??? This is a good friend of Big Richard's. <3

  • @B0FF01 yeah its me... who are u?

  • That guitar is haunted.

  • Townes at his best, and purest thought...Agreed JT

  • Man, I agree that if you just listened to this you'd swear it was Townes.

  • If I didn't know better, I would've said that was TVZ.

His greatest contribution was the actual songwriting though, imo. Time for junior to get busy :)

  • Whats in the roots is in the branches.....

This is as good as it gets.

  • Like father like son...this makes me weep it's so beautiful. God i miss Townes

  • I agree, Townes at his best. Very, very well done by JT.

Bet that's Townes old guitar too! Gotta love the sound of the Gibson J200

  • the talent definitely runs in the family :)

  • I love this song.

  • This is excellent, powerful lyrics.

  • Beautiful performance.

I agree with wolfwhistle, music that is

presented in such a pure form is

    amazing.... Great voice.

    love the video! thank you.

  • This is how real music sounds ...

    Pure and fragile ...

    It leaves me breathless ...

  • Sounds very very authentic.

  • Gorgeous song. Beautifully done. My favorite bit on the whole TVZ documentary, actually.

  • Anybody know who the hirsute fellow to J.T.'s left is?

  • idk who he is, but im pretty sure he's the physical incarnation of AMERICA!

do you think that's townes' guitar? i know he played a j-200 and it would make sense that his oldest son would have it...

  • I suppose. The wood does look a little old. Then again, maybe it's just the light. I'll see if I can figure out what ever happened to that guitar (if he sold it or gave it away, etc.)

  • yea its Townes' guitar

  • steve earle

  • he is happy because the son took over and that's good! yet

    merci encore !

  • Comment removed

  • that doesnt look like vinnie retard and theres only one pantera

  • take it easy, i meant cause they're done, not that there's another band and ya it don't look like him, right on man, your awesome

  • @perfidiousguitarist The guy next to him was a very good friend of his. He wasn't a pantera roadie just a good friend

  • @perfidiousguitarist his name was Big Richard Or Richard King. Good friend of J.T's

  • Is that Steve Early joining JT?

  • Excellent.

    DDR

  • First heard about Towmes in the documentary. Then heard Plant and Kraus do "Nothin" on RAISING SAND. For me, JT's version knocks theirs into a cocked hat. Simple, direct, and painful. Absolutely sublime. Thanks JT.

  • does anyone know the tuning on this? aside from the capo on the 2nd fret. dadfad?

  • the tuning is 7 degrees before top dead center.

  • townes never did anything in alternate tunings (to my knowledge). it's in standard. that main chord is an a-minor shape

  • The whole guitar is just detuned a half-note so in standard tuning (EADGBE), it's just the same as having your capo in the FIRST fret.

  • has he detuned for any reason?

  • If you look at his left hand, he uses his thumb on the first string (thickest) to get a deep bass note instead of using the F barrè chord. This is easier to do in the smaller frets, higher on the neck. However, this might not fit his vocals, so maybe that's why he detunes. To be able to play AND sing right.

  • ah yes, i didn't think about it like that! thanks

  • Voice not quite as buoyant as his Dad's, but wow, easy on the eyes.

  • Great song, great performance

  • he even closes his eyes when he sings like townes.

  • Is that Steve earl singing with JT?

  • I'm going thru sever DT's from Methadone and SAD SAD music is the only thing that helps my mind right now so fans of Towns and JT Van Zandt or Dax Riggs please send me toward more music of thier's or any ones that is like Heart worn Highway and Nothing. Thanks you So So Much for being such beautiful people.

  • Go on to myspace and look up Townes van zandt, there's a few pages for him, some with videos, some with just songs. Good luck with the detox. Do it good and you only need to do it once.

  • Ya ya hi JT, RICHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRDDDD! I miss you Richard, you didn't kill the camera man! JT I hope you have this footage, I want it.RIP RICHARD<I LOVE YOU!

    -amanda

  • I hope you will forgive my ignorance, but I love this music and have listebned to TVZ and others for years, however, the name Richard King escapes me. I have done a couple web searches and find nothing. Did I miss something?

  • @mountnhome Richard Kings real name is Richard Didelot and he wasnt anyone big or famous... just a single dad working as a stage hand

  • O JT, so woderful to see& hear you playin ''''

You're such a mighty musician in your own right. Thank you!!!!

  • The first time i heard Townes singing

    I decided to get drunk

I broke up with my girlfriend

"Nothing" was the title of this song

The last time i heard townes singing Am G

    He was my virtual friend

Among some porn stars and would be singers

    I guess he'd understand.

    John Dear Mowing Club

  • DEAR JOHN, i dont know whether he'd enjoy your story, virtual friends where certainly not his thang.nor liars neither.

  • Dear Chejacko,

It was just a part of the lyrics from a John Dear Mowing Club song, called "Last Time I Heard Townes Singing"

Had nothing to do with a lie.

The virtual friends refer to MySpace, where there is a Townes van Zandt-account.

    Thats all.

    Greetings,

    Ilse

  • J.T. really captured dad's spirit in his rendition. Always been one of my favorite Townes songs (they all are, almost!)& I like Alison Krause/Robert Plant's version too, especially w/the banjo! She only picks the best songs & musicians. jmo

  • I dig that the singer from my favorite rock band recorded a song by my favorite singer/songwriter, but I don't like that the sound of the distorted electric guitar blasted all over everything. It really ruins the powerful effects created by the holes which allow the listener to apply their imagination and feel a stronger connection to the music in my opinion. This is how it sounds good, with acoustic spaces. "Nothing is too much to bear."

  • I sure have to agree w/you re: usage of acoustic spaces! I use that a lot in my music (my son would say "mom why aren't you playing that?" I explained the idea of space to feel/think. I think I may have even learned that from Townes!

**I assume u r talking about Krause/Plant version (distortion) & think that is their way of making it their own, especially since they had 3 guitar players! T-bone is known for that style too, isn't he? Love Tom Waits "Trampled Rose", talk about hole in space!

  • I think we're on the same page.

  • Thank you J. T. ... We miss and love your Daddy too. There's a little peice of Townes soul in each f us who appreciate him ... There's a deep precious feeling for him among some of us.. We're glad he left us you and your little brother and sister..

  • One of my favorite songs! Great version, it's like he's singing through his son.

  • Is that Richard King sittin there with JT? Sure miss that guy. Love the song. Great pickin' JT.

  • It takes a lot of brass for a son to go into the same field as a brilliant father. JT though is simply terrific. Nice and restrained, beautifully done with deep passion.

  • i know, i wish this dude would put out albums of his own.

  • Blessed be you can break away from the image.

Jacob Dylan has tried and the press and "fans" have killed him.

Dad is a visionary and you are blessed to have experienced his pain. You may not know it. We are eternal. Nothin is nothin.

  • This is awesome!

  • apologies, to robert, allison, and townes himself, but THIS is the best version I've heard.

  • Is that Steve Earle? Love, Mackey

  • Excellent! Great version on the upcoming Alison Krauss/Robert Plant albume "Raising Sand." Look for it. Love, Mackey

  • J.T., Thanks for the song. I am trying to learn to play it as well as you did. Great job!

  • your dad was great J.T. ...and so are you man ...your a true pure person in life J.T.

  • Never heard this song rendition by JT before. Thank you for posting it. I almost thought that was Richard King sitting there, for a moment. RIP Richard.

  • Excellent! Interesting how the spirit lives on.

  • man thats nothin

  • that song destroys me

  • one of townes best thx

  • Just a beautiful haunting song, sticks with ya,written by the master. Thanks so much.

  • Thanks very much for posting.

  • Wonderful!

That's all I have to say.
