@1lofoten You're obviously a troll. I'm a professional musician of 40yrs, Townes was one my main influences. This is absurd that you'd say that & u r the ignorant one.
JT cut my hair one night at the Catus Cafe he said it was for fishing lures.Swiss army knife in the hands of a ingin.Love this this version but Calvin Russell doing it is to real.
@gymhourfee Technically, it's Blaze Foley's J-200, the one that Townes "joked" about digging up Blaze to get the pawn ticket for. Since Towne's death it's been cared for and loved by JT, Steve Earle, Gurf Morlix, and Lucinda Williams.
@probinson1337 and you know, that was actually Blaze's Guitar, the one that was in the pawnshop when he died, and yes, Townes and 3 other un-named to protect the guilty folks took a backhoe and dug him up so Townes could get the ticket and thus the guitar, he said Blaze's Blues was already in the guitar trying to get out, Emmy Lou has had it at times (and also owns its twin) Todd Snider also plays an identical same year model one
@GIMMEADOLLAR1 Hell, he looks like a clone of his Dad, same lanky walk, his voice will never sound the same unless to takes to drinkin as much as Townes, so let's hope not
I suppose. The wood does look a little old. Then again, maybe it's just the light. I'll see if I can figure out what ever happened to that guitar (if he sold it or gave it away, etc.)
First heard about Towmes in the documentary. Then heard Plant and Kraus do "Nothin" on RAISING SAND. For me, JT's version knocks theirs into a cocked hat. Simple, direct, and painful. Absolutely sublime. Thanks JT.
If you look at his left hand, he uses his thumb on the first string (thickest) to get a deep bass note instead of using the F barrè chord. This is easier to do in the smaller frets, higher on the neck. However, this might not fit his vocals, so maybe that's why he detunes. To be able to play AND sing right.
I'm going thru sever DT's from Methadone and SAD SAD music is the only thing that helps my mind right now so fans of Towns and JT Van Zandt or Dax Riggs please send me toward more music of thier's or any ones that is like Heart worn Highway and Nothing. Thanks you So So Much for being such beautiful people.
Go on to myspace and look up Townes van zandt, there's a few pages for him, some with videos, some with just songs. Good luck with the detox. Do it good and you only need to do it once.
Ya ya hi JT, RICHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRDDDD! I miss you Richard, you didn't kill the camera man! JT I hope you have this footage, I want it.RIP RICHARD<I LOVE YOU!
I hope you will forgive my ignorance, but I love this music and have listebned to TVZ and others for years, however, the name Richard King escapes me. I have done a couple web searches and find nothing. Did I miss something?
J.T. really captured dad's spirit in his rendition. Always been one of my favorite Townes songs (they all are, almost!)& I like Alison Krause/Robert Plant's version too, especially w/the banjo! She only picks the best songs & musicians. jmo
I dig that the singer from my favorite rock band recorded a song by my favorite singer/songwriter, but I don't like that the sound of the distorted electric guitar blasted all over everything. It really ruins the powerful effects created by the holes which allow the listener to apply their imagination and feel a stronger connection to the music in my opinion. This is how it sounds good, with acoustic spaces. "Nothing is too much to bear."
I sure have to agree w/you re: usage of acoustic spaces! I use that a lot in my music (my son would say "mom why aren't you playing that?" I explained the idea of space to feel/think. I think I may have even learned that from Townes!
**I assume u r talking about Krause/Plant version (distortion) & think that is their way of making it their own, especially since they had 3 guitar players! T-bone is known for that style too, isn't he? Love Tom Waits "Trampled Rose", talk about hole in space!
Thank you J. T. ... We miss and love your Daddy too. There's a little peice of Townes soul in each f us who appreciate him ... There's a deep precious feeling for him among some of us.. We're glad he left us you and your little brother and sister..
It takes a lot of brass for a son to go into the same field as a brilliant father. JT though is simply terrific. Nice and restrained, beautifully done with deep passion.
Never heard this song rendition by JT before. Thank you for posting it. I almost thought that was Richard King sitting there, for a moment. RIP Richard.
JT, that's one of the best pieces on YouTube. Definitely a real recording.

does anyone know the tuning on this? aside from the capo on the 2nd fret. dadfad?
helenforsdale 3 years ago
the tuning is 7 degrees before top dead center.
ThiefInLaw 3 years ago
townes never did anything in alternate tunings (to my knowledge). it's in standard. that main chord is an a-minor shape
jcphockey7 3 years ago
The whole guitar is just detuned a half-note so in standard tuning (EADGBE), it's just the same as having your capo in the FIRST fret.
sortehull89 3 years ago
has he detuned for any reason?

If you look at his left hand, he uses his thumb on the first string (thickest) to get a deep bass note instead of using the F barrè chord. Dear Chejacko,
It was just a part of the lyrics from a John Dear Mowing Club song, called "Last Time I Heard Townes Singing"
Had nothing to do with a lie.
The virtual friends refer to MySpace, where there is a Townes van Zandt-account.
Thats all.
