Floyd went up to EVH and asked him to try it out.. Since Eddie was constantly using his Tremolo. He installed the first Floyd Rose WITHOUT the fine tuners on his Bumblebee (Which he buried with Dimebag). I'd say around 79' Eddie first used it. I've read that Eddie was the first to publicize it.. i truly believe that. Kramer later had a contract with Floyd around like 83'. Cheers! -Chez
@thegermanchannel212 Nope, it was Gary Kahlers on those Gibson Tune-O-Matics because they slapped right on the posts with a small route underneath! Hendrix relied on the old Bigsby tremolo on a Flying V
the original floyd rose didnot have fine tuners eddie van halen had it given to him by floyd rose himself and he tested it during the 1979 tour and on after that but the double locking is hard to say i also belive evh used it first of course floy rose used it before anyone so we are all wrong but around 1983-84
Eddie used a Strat Trem. in 1978. He didn't get the Floyd until 79 or 80. He originally hated the sound it gave the guitar, so he didn't actually use it until around 81 or 82.
See March 09 issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine re: Floyd Rose: "The first player to see one of the vibratos was renowned Hendrix impersonator Randy Hansen." Apparently this was on one of FR's personal Strats. May have been '76 (?)..FR then applied for the patent in early '77 as this article goes.
The very first guitarrist in use the Floyd Rose prototype was Randy Hansen, Eddie Van Halen used a production bridge, why they used them? probably for the Hendrix influence the divebombing without tuning problems, the guitar company who sold and install FR tremolos was of course Kramer.
Personally.......Id like to know the difference between Double locking, & Locking?? is the Double locking reffering to the Lock at the head & a lock on the Trem?
AlphaaaaMan: when u're using the originals, double locking has the best tuning stability. but very tedious work when changing the strings. it's good when u know ur limits on bending (pull-ups).
Hey, you didn't really ask for the name of the guitar, just what kind of guitar it was. I didn't get it right, but I was damn close. It was the black and yellow Charvel.
Ok, a lot of you guys only know what you've read on the internet and I'm willing to bet that most of you weren't even born at the time of the Floyd Rose/Van Halen invasion (not to mention all the other guitarists from that time). The funny thing, especially about Ed and frankenstrat, is that all the info is there in old print and photos... Even Eddie himself is trying to rewrite the real history of his guitar. I was there, I have one of the earliest Floyds ever made, by Floyd himself.
it wasn't EVH, but i don't remember where i saw who it was. anyway, the actual floyds weren't really made until the early 80s, although floyd rose worked on his design a lot earlier than that. his early floyd was a modded bigsby on a les paul.
evh use floyed rosefirst on the 5150 but floyed rose strated working on the flyed rose trim in 1969 affter seeing how fender trems allways whent out of tune and cus he like makeing stuff ... sorry for spelling
Truth's of Frankenstrat - Black and white, vintage trem VH1 tour
Red Black White no pickguard at all, gibson jack mount for volume pot, non working TELECASTER pickup in middle position, Original Charvel neck from Black and Yellow guitar with duct tape over Charvel name and VINTAGE trem for VH11 Tour
Red Black White, partial guard, non working blade switch in middle position, neck he used on Black/Yellow charvel for VH11 tour and orig Floyd 1980 Tour...
Brad Gillis currently owns about 6 of the first 10 original floyds, I have one and EVH has a bunch including the very first prototype with Allen Key adjusted fine tuners (!) only one that exists.
Another thing - EVH thought they were bright - he had an actual tone pot wired up hidden inside his Charvel Black and Yellow Electric to add load to the signal - sorry, I don't know the value of the pot. Look close at the Gold floyd circa Diver Down - 1st proto with working fine tuners...
OK... Randy Hansen, Brad Gillis and Pat Thrall were the first bunch of guys with Floyd - along with EVH. These units were built by Floyd in his garage - some parts machined by a friend.
EVH did NOT, I repeat NOT have the Floyd on his Frankenstrat until the THIRD world tour - Woman and Children First. He had the floyd on the Charvel Black and Yellow (originally came with vintage trem) and a Boogie Bodies Mahogany Body rear routed electric he built. He got his 1st Floyds in 1979.
This is just a guess.. Eddie Van Halen used the Floyd Rose guitar in 1977 and he installed it on his white and black Van Halen strat. Wheres my 100 bucks haha. Can you tell me if im right?
Mr. Floyd Rose made the first floyd rose original trem, duh, and it was built on a Les Paul type guitar, you guys should check the FloydRose website;)
The guy who first used the first floyd rose is the man Floyd Rose himself. I think the very first Floyd Rose tremolo (not the commercially produced version of it) was installed on a Gibson Les Paul. I don't know the exact date.
@GearVault I remember they were in adverts together, and Guitar Player put out a special interview book compiling all the greats of HM guitar, going back to Hendrix..even the late Randy Rhoads was in the book. Guitarists themselves don't always know about their own guitars, they leave that to the roadies!

first guitarist to use it would be Floyd rose, in the early 1970's (patents were not released until 1977 and it was installed in a gibson les paul,
However the first guitarist to promote it would be Eddie van halen in 1979 installed on his frankenstrat

on it a kramer 5150 he did not put it on his franky till 84 when he painted it red.

a "modified" fender stratocaster haha
(it sure wasnt pretty)
but it had some gibson humbucker installed i have no idea which though, probably a les paul

he never had a fender. he first had it on his kramer 5150 and then in 1984 he put one on his franky he made with charvel parts and a gibson pickup.
youaergay 2 years ago
actually the guitar was a fender strat.
it was a 1961 fender strat body and a neck he bought separately.
then he put the gibson pickup in it it was a completely modified guitar.
but it did in fact start from a fender body that he bought to begin with.
