I once was the stage manager for ProgWest 2002 where Nick D'Virgilio and Mike Keneally were the core of a performance of the entire Shaming of the True album, with a giant band. It was a huge undertaking for such a relative unknown like KG. I was already a big KG fan so that was one of the best events I ever worked. Respect to anyone who takes on KG's music with faithful intent. At least there isn't a Gail Zappa figure to chase people away from doing so.
Are there any other live footage from this show availabe, or is it just this song and The Edge of the Earth that have been recorded on video from this concert?
I am a HUGE KG fan, as well as being a HUGE KG snob (when it comes to any other artists covering his music), and I have to give props where props are due!! You guys did this better than NDV's tribute, IMHO.
I remember hearing that on a NY radio station right after he died. They said he was scheduled to fly to London to meet with Banks and Rutherford the week after his dead. I don't remember if that was after or before they tried David Longdon and Ray Wilson for the same gig. And really,.. he was way, way better and more talented than those two other clownes.
Jeez... This Kevin Gilbert is truly fantastic! He does sound like Peter Gabriel to me, but since I consider him a genius too, it only adds to what I think now of Kevin Gilbert. Who would have thought that my aunt watching a lame video from Sheryl Crow actually was the reason that I got to know Kevin Gilbert? I read how she stole Kevin's songs and "built" her career around it. It must be hard for her, living and maintaining a complete lie over Kevin's dead body. Thanks for this video!
@SaborCaracter .....if I may. i just discovered KG thru links after watching David Baerwald videos. Both guys were instrumental in Sheryl Crow's rise to stardom. The invited her to join in their "tuesday night music club" to try out some of her material. In fact, she and KG were an "item". I had no idea.
FOr the record, that keyboardist, Matt Brown, is a friend of mine. This sounds really good. Really wished I had a chance to meet Shaun, because I really liked his first solo album (liked the second one too, for that matter).
My two cents? I think Shaun does and the rest of the performers do the song justice. Gilberts studio version is the definitive one but I have to give props to all of these guys. I miss Kevin and Shaun. RIP
Also hearing Shaun sing the line "Advice for the dying from the dead, Silence the voices in your head" has a very haunting feel that sends a shiver up my spine when I heard it.
WOW! What a great cover. That's no surprise since I've seen these guys do Genesis tribute shows at Paladino's in the valley a few times. Had the pleasure of meeting Shaun and the band following one of the shows. Incredibly is all I can say.
your right, I'm playing inside this bag of mine and nothing is happening....whats the trick? I do agree with hanky...
naturally I had to be critical of one of my favorite tunes, but respect to these folks for playing it. I don't see anyone else doing a better job. plus, I got no business being a hater....man
considering that THE SHAMING OF THE TRUE was conceived entirely in the studio and even that this is not Kevin Gilbert performing it's a rare and wonderful treat to see and hear any more honoring the music so much live for all of us to enjoy
I hate to say it, but I feel the need emphasize the fact that there is no groove to this song what so ever. The actual "city of the sun" is one of my favorite grooves to listen/play to as a bass player, as is alot of kevin gilberts stuff. I don't know why I felt the need to express this but I feel this is a very poor rendition of the song.
I have an idea of why you think this is a poor rendition. In this video, all the parts are mixed more or less equally, i.e., all the same volume. In the original Kevin Gilbert recording, the bass is central in the mix. In relation to other instruments, it is louder, has greater frequency range, and has greater tonal and rhythmic variety than the other parts. In fact, if you listen carefully, you will hear that all other parts are stagnant. In a word, it is a bass players' dream come true.
Wow. I just discovered this via you guys playing Brufords Hells Bells. I'm shocked at how great you all are. J Santiago, I notice you switched to bass on this tune, your guitar on Hells Bells was fantastic. So sorry Shaun Guerin is no longer with us. The good die young indeed. :(
this guy is amazing ...although close enuff is never the same , i wasnt turned on to kevin gilbert till after he was gone :( he trully was an amazing artist
That's really fucking good. This is a song that I never thought I'd hear a live rendition of. Excellent work. You did far more than do the material justice.
It's a great song, but I can't help but really dislike the performance. It's not that they don't play it well or anything, it just lacks any charisma or feeling on the stage. I think it's also because his voice is far less warm tone-wise than Kev's. Still though, good job and it's always good to see tributes.
This is a gathering of some of the greatest musicians I've ever known. Of course I'm biased, as I am married to the incredible keysman---the absolute, undeniable best in LA---Matt Brown. And, oh, John Thomas on guitar...why, there's no one like him in the greater LA area, either. And RIP forever to the phenomenal Shaun Guerin...was this not your swan song or what, my dear friend? Matt and I miss you so much...
This would make Kevin proud.

He was supposed to be the man to replace Collins in Genesis. But what a shame he died before his manager had the opportunity to let him know.

@vivelavidarocka Ray did a great job on Calling All Stations!!! Cut him some slack. He had to follow Gabriel and Collins as the vocalist of Genesis

@SaborCaracter
It does sound like Peter Gabriel but it isn't Kevin singing, it is Shaun Guerin. Doing a wonderful job I might add.
These guys must really love this song to present it so well. This represents a heck of a lot of work.

it is. But you're right, a wonderful job indeed! ;-)
