One thing that has confused me. I was pretty sure the TGFX16 was meant to be competition for the SNES and Genesis. And you compare old NES games to Ys, but the CD-Rom definitely came later, after the 16 bit revolution. In fact it was one of the complaints of the TGFX, that it wasn't true 16bit. So most of these games competed with Phantasy Star, Arcus Odyssey, the SNES version of Zelda, etc. I know the Ys games were released in 91 and later, same time as the SNES and Genesis.
To this day Ys is still my favorite game of all time. It may not be superior to the Final Fantasy games of today, but it's still the better game. I was bitter 4 and 5 never came to the states.
I recall hearing about a game called Ys 4: Wizards of Ys for the SNES. Does anyone else remember hearing about this?
It's funny how you used Alan Thicke... I remember waiting day after day for ups to deliver my turbo cd and Ys...my mom always had Growing Pains on at night. But man what a beautiful summer's day it was when I hooked that baby up in stereo. Watching the Ys intro at 12 years old for the first time will always be a favorite memory.
Memories...Ys sold me the Turbografx-CD add-on back in '91. So I parted ways with most of my NES games to a game retailer and some allowence money. It was $400 well spent :)
I Loved Ys I & II. The Ark of Napishtim was good too.
Dragon Slayer is still one of the best RPG's I've ever played. You are a little too harsh of the battle system. Boss battles do require a great deal of strategy... but you are right, like most RPG's the regular battles are very easy.
The Ys Complete remake for the PC is very good, Book I and II (which are the two first games), superb soundtrack and very good ingame art which is nicely drawn and everything. Seems like this was the case even when it wasn't a remake. :)
Good show, I'll watch some more eps, glad I found this!
i never even herd of this but i set down and wacthed the hole thing becouse i was bord and the person that was talk get me hocked on it a coudent leave
Sweet! It's about time someone acknowledged the soundtrack on Ys I&II. I'll always remember the movie sequence & music which links book I&II (4:42) and at the time I almost pis*ed my pants with excitement at how freaking ace it was! Type "Lee Kyung + Ys" as a search, this guy plays it on guitar!!
Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys are completely different games man, one's a Super Famicom game and one's a Turbo CD game and they have completely different stories
Watching this video reminds me of one thing. The turbografx was to video game music what fire was to the caveman.

This is awesome, though since alot of focus is placed on the music, Ryu Yonemitsu and Yuzo Kushiro deserves definite mention.
