@Timothyliu888 And while learning BSL i'm conlanging a sign language so get ready for some deaf diplomacy (and if it helps, I'm hearing, recently slightly deafened in one ear)
This is a really good video :) really useful i know a bit but now i know more and I have downloaded it to my phone. good pace easy another to follow. find it really wierd how for whats your name they say name your what. xxx
Thank you so much for uploading this, I've recently decided to try and learn BSL whenever I can and this has really helped me because you're going at a good speed! =)
Great job. It is nice from you that you make this video.
There is one thing which I don´t understand. I thought that people who speak the same language (English) will have the same Sign Language.
But there is ASL (American) and BSL (British).
It´s bad for me, because I want to learn Sign Language.
Fingerspelling is easier that ASL, but the other sign is different and I think It´s stupid. why is not universal Sign Language for everybody-for British, American, German, Japanese ....
@1b2w3w A lot of people have the same wrong idea about BSL. But it wasn't invented to replace letters - it came about on its own, so it has it's own grammar, syntax, etc. This means that speaking BSL is very different from speaking ASL, just as speaking English is very different from speaking Spanish. BSL is not a replacement for English - it's a language in its own right, recognised bu the European Union (EU) as a minority language
Thank you very much for these videos. I like how you go through the signs nice and slowly. This method is much easier to learn from with confidence. I am a beginner and find that most people move their hands to fast for me to follow.
wow thx for puttin the vid up it was very useful x i would really love to learn sign language and be good at it x i think it would be really useful in the future i hav a lot of time to learn though coz im only 13 :)

This is fab, wish I'd found them sooner. I learned BSL alphabet in college when studying to work with children but never got the opportunity to carry on and it was always something that has interested me. It would be fantastic to learn and help me tremendously when looking for more jobs in the childcare sector. Thanks so much fo putting them up - saved to favorites!
the signs for "your" and 'Mine" in BSL mean "yourself" and "myself" respectfully in ASL.
The sign for "hearing" in BSL means "deaf" in ASL.
ASL and BSL share the same sign for "language". The sign for "sign" (as in sign language) are similar, except in ASL, we simply use the index fingers but in the same movement.
I'm American and Deaf, and it's so interesting to see how our Deaf cousins from across the pond communicate! Interesting fact: @ 1:37, the sign for "hearing" means "deaf" in ASL! Cool, huh?
I am a student nurse currently on placement in childrens special needs. As yet no training on sign language has been provided and this has proved essential to the childrens care. These videos have helped me no end. Thank you so much x
I really found this helpful and I thought having no sound on it was beneficial I found myself watching your mouth movements which made it easier to understand. Thanks
thanks ive always wanted to learn sign language since i was a little kid i know the basics i just need to keep practising!! please upload more videos thanks loads xxxx
Hello, this is really helpful, im trying to learn sign language for my friend at college. i was just wondering with the "my name is..." how would you do the letters to spell Jay? :)
Really well done. :) It was done nice and slowly such that people who don't understand BSL can still see how the words correspond to the signs.
It's always infuriated me how ASL and BSL are different. Why on Earth is sign language not universal? Surely that would be a great way for deaf people to get ahead of the game. I mean it's a bit of a kick in the teeth if an English person can't even understand an American! (Maybe the two are very similar, but it's still a wasted opportunity I think.)
I am an American student stydying ASL, and I find the differences and similarities between ASL and BSL to be very interesting. Some signs are the same ("meet", and "thank you"), some are similar ("language"), some are very different (two-handed manual alphabet), and still others are like homonyms; they look alike, but have different meanings (BSL "What" = ASL "Where"). BSL also seems to rely more heavily on speech-reading. Again, very interesting. Thank you!
this is really great!! ive just thought about learning sign language as my mum teaches the deaf and my sister is also qualified in BSL. so id like to do the same. I find it fascinating and such a usefull language. Just hope with enough practice i can be understandable lol.
I've just been told that I'm going deaf. My life long dream is to become a composer, I'm mortified. Can someone explain why she said what's your name and then said it backwards? That just confused the hell out of me.
I'm learning ASL not BSL but i can still answer your question. In sign language it is correct to put "wh" questions at the end of the the sentence. So its not whats your name? its your name is what? Just like where are you from? is you are from where?
me and my friend are jehovahs witnesses and are going to a sign language congregation so we wanted to learn some sign language, this video relay helped and we both found it realy good fun. THANKYOU :) em&em
Thank you for this! I started learning last night and the way you signed and the way the person on my online course signed were subtly different, so I can see the signs clearer. Lots of new things in here to keep me busy practicing too!
Just want to say a big thank you for this. I'm deaf but can't afford to pay for a BSL course, along with my local deaf club this has been really helpful.
My aunt and her best friend who are both deaf are visiting me this weekend and I haven't seen them in ten years. I want to make a good impression and make them feel welcome so I'm hoping to at least greet them in sign language.
Hello, I am glad you found these userful. The reason why there is no sound on there is because when using BSL you dont tend to follow the same structure as English so I use no voice. Also it helps when learning BSL because you are not distracted by the voice. Failing that if you focus on the lip pattern accompanying the sign you should be able to pick it up quite easy. Keep practising! Best wishes Sonia
These videos are really good but I think it would make things easier if they had sound. Because I'm hearing, I'd be able to link the sounds to signs and I could remember them better.
Well--bare in mind that thier are regional differences in BSL all over the United Kingdom. BSL is not standardized like American Sign Language or French...so thier may be two or three different variations of the same sign in BSL.
Actually, ASL is not standardized at all. Some words have various signs plus regional differences including those in Canada where it is also used. Birthday has God knows how many different variations, I have seen at least four for rabbit, a couple of ways to express mad/angry (could be seen as different expressions) plus idioms relating the feeling of. Also, ask someone to give you the sign for pizza in ASL and you can spark a discussion on what its sign should be.
if that were possible, then why not just have one spoken language for the world... whilst we're here in could cuckoo land, why not just one religion and one country too! ;)
Thanks, I see. Another question though if you don't mind.... Why is it that when put into a sentence (or question), words are in reverse order. Seen here in "What is your name?" You mime "Name, what?" and sign sort of, backwards. Is this just the way it is? It makes it a bit more difficult to get hold of, rather like having to learn masculine and femmenine when learning French.
Thought I am HOH and do american sign language I can Answer this for you. Grammatically and syntax wise ASL and BSL differ from other languages. Because we as deaf or HOH are visual, our subjects are placed in the beginning of our statements, then we move on the the details of the subject.
So instead of "I am going to the store" itd be "Store, I Go"
A bit different, but thats the beauty of it all!!
Plus our grammar is very similar to that of our founders, French....
This is really useful, thank you. I'd love to learn sign. Some gestures are difficult to distinguish from others though. For instance, is there a difference between 'Please' and 'thank you'? also, 'I'm fine' and 'How are you?'. I can't tell. I should really learn this properly. Think I will
the example is actually in this video! haha. it's a '1' handshape that touches the jawbone/cheek area near the ear, and then touches the chin, with the palm facing front.
This is an absolutely excellant video, thank you! I cannot afford lessons yet (but definately plan to as soon as possible!) and your video has taught me so much already.
Thanks for doing this video! I work in a shop and I think a deaf customer would be pleased if I could sign just some simple phrases like these to them
hello the sign for please in british Sign Language is definately as shown in the video and so I am not sure where you have got this variation from (unless its American Sign Language or Makaton? I am not an expert in these I only know BSL as an interpreter myself. I hope this helps Best wishes Sonia
@nightworker314 I'm not sure if the second part of my comment was clear or not. SO, in ASL 'thank you' is the same as in BSL. but also in ASL the same sign ('thank you') can be used for 'good.' (I don't know what good in BSL is)
Hello, i take much interest in your videos. I am accually 11 but i made an account with my mothers age. When i am older i would love to be able to work with deaf people.
signing has allways intersested me alot. thanks alot for posting!
hello to be honest with you no it doesnt matter which order you sign them in but for BSL I tend to use Name Your What because that is using the topic comment structure- ie you are putting the topic first and then adding a comment afterwards. It also depends on if the sign language user is using SSE or BSL...I wouldnt get bogged down by it because as long as the communication is clear and both parties understand each other then that is the main thing. best wishes sonia
My name what? lolis - laugh out loud in sign - or silently laugh if it helps

A couple more fun facts from a Deaf American:
ASL and BSL both share the sign for "thank you".
The sign for "what" in BSL means "where" in ASL.
the signs for "your" and 'Mine" in BSL mean "yourself" and "myself" respectfully in ASL.
The sign for "hearing" in BSL means "deaf" in ASL.

Thanks for doing this video! I work in a shop and I think a deaf customer would be pleased if I could sign just some simple phrases like these to them

I thought "please" is drawing a circle in front of your chest??

hello the sign for please in british Sign Language is definately as shown in the video and so I am not sure where you have got this variation from (unless its American Sign Language or Makaton? I am not an expert in these I only know BSL as an interpreter myself. I hope this helps Best wishes Sonia

the signs vary differently from region to region so the sign you are aware of may be local to your region, kind of like slang really.

'Please' in ASL is open "5" palm towards chest in a circle. Just FYI. In ASL "Thank You" is the same in BSL but so is "good." again Just FYI

@nightworker314 I'm not sure if the second part of my comment was clear or not. SO, in ASL 'thank you' is the same as in BSL. but also in ASL the same sign ('thank you') can be used for 'good.' (I don't know what good in BSL is)

I'm a level 2 student in ASL, however I've decided it would be a lot more useful to learn sign language from other cultures!
Thank you so much for this video. Auslan and BSL are very similar! You probably already knew that, though :P

hey, can you help me with something?
Does it matter what order you say the words in because so far i have found 3 different variations for "what is your name?":
1) Your name what
2) Name your what
3) Name what you
Are these all the same or are some of them incorrect?

hello to be honest with you no it doesnt matter which order you sign them in but for BSL I tend to use Name Your What because that is using the topic comment structure- ie you are putting the topic first and then adding a comment afterwards. It also depends on if the sign language user is using SSE or BSL...I wouldnt get bogged down by it because as long as the communication is clear and both parties understand each other then that is the main thing. best wishes sonia
