One of the great things about Mr. Billington is for a number of years he taught kids at the Boys & Girls Club over in Batesville, MS as well as in the Clarksdale area. Interviewed him quite extensively.
I wish those assholes would shut the fuck up and Listen!!!
It's strange to see such a senior guy playing such timeless music on such a modern day guitar. Just seems. . .wrong. Sure doesn't Sound wrong though! I wish I could do All my gigs sitting on my amp. You really get the feelin' thatta ways.
I wouldn't say most of the tone froms from the amp... A good piece of wood is pretty important to getting great tone. But I agree his tone is awesome.
Wow, that brings back some memories. One time Jerry Dugger and I were hired to back up Mr Johnny for a few gigs in NYC. One of the gigs was some kind of benefit, and that is where I met JFK Jr. for the second time. He was there with Darryl Hannah. Mr. Johnny had hair then! Great to see him still going strong. And George Worthmore! Holy Cow. Have to get his number. It has been a good decade and a half.
This truly proves the old cliché - Less is more!! Choose your notes carefully, don´t waffle, make each note say something, let the tune breathe. When you learn any instrument you spend time learning the notes, after a few years you start to learn the most important lesson of what NOT to play. Cheers for posting and thanks for all the harp lessons!
Adam, I know you are always urging aspiring blues players to "leave space". Mr. Johnny may be one of the best examples of that I've ever seen in his second solo.
Then in his third solo he left so much space a dancer came to fill it in!
Exactly! I must say I'm heartened by how many people got the point of this video. Every single note Johnny plays is right. Guitar players who want to learn the contemporary Delta blues style would be well advised to woodshed with this. It's all about the fingers doing the picking, but it's also about precise timing and precise pitch-making--and about making all of it look so effortless that the genius isn't obvious.
The only thing that would of made this even better would of been you playing harp with Mr. Johnny, Adam. Thanks for giving us a chance to see and hear some great blues. You the man Adam!!!

LOL is he sitting on his amp :P
*accidently moves and rolls master volume to 12*
also is that a Musicman he is using? cause that sounds pretty good, and looks amazing!
StopTheMoti0n 2 years ago
It's an OLP I think. One of the budget Musicman models I believe, though I could be wrong.
Most of the tone comes from the amp though. And this guy sounds awesome!

Man, Mr. Johnny looks pretty pissed...But not at anything in particular. I'd give anything for a stage face like that.
Also, someone's whistlin' the blues pretty good, heh.

Damn, are there a lot of hot girls in Mississippi? I gotta make that my next travel assignment!

Yes, there are. I believe that the Ole Miss campus (University of Mississippi) has supplied the country with something like four Miss Americas.
