Now I know why my father(who is one of the toughest guys I know in my life) was scared to death of this guy as a child,THIS CRAP WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES!!
Tobe Hooper was a genius, he totally understood what horror is. Build up the menace and suspense to breaking point then unleash the undiluted terror. Not some pretty boy being half heartthrob/half vampire. No! pure malevolent evil.
Jesus, Barlow is still a scary as hell vampire. (Completely different from the book, where he was a Dracula-style vampire who was in love with the sound of his own voice, but pretty damn effective.) It also helps that Reggie Nalder, the actor who played him, was pretty creepy without makeup (see him as the assassin in Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" for an example).
Show this to a bunch of Edward Cullen fangirls and enjoy the instant therapy bills you cause.
@cr199 I watched this with my father when I was 6. I had nightmares of vampires for literally 6 months afterwards, and had serious trouble sleeping over that period. Needless to say, my mother was a bit pissed at my father for letting me watch this.
@wlmason73 I was probably the same age or a little older when my dad showed it to me. When it popped up I turned and stared at him for maybe a second or two and then busted out in the most uncontrollable crying/screaming ever. This is serious shit, haha.
@711Seeker Argh.. just looked it up and there wasn't a movie! So that scene I remember is from one of the episodes!? Wow it really must've spooked me.
the only scary movie that has stuck w/ me since seeing it when I was young. Except the part I remember most is the boy floating up to the window tapping it. *shiver*
@711Seeker Me too! I don't think i've ever quite got over the window tapping, 20 years on. The one sitting in the rocking chair creaking and waiting wasn't much nicer either.
@SarahCullen19 LOL; coming from a girl who's put her last name as 'Cullen'? Twilight is full of sparkly, pretty-boys who are more worried about messing up their hair than anything else.
In this screen version of Salem's Lot, Barlow's appearance is a homage to Count Orlov in the 1922 vampire movie Nosferatu. Not only does Barlow physically resemble Orlov, Barlow is mute. His lack of speech pays tribute to Nosferatu, a classic silent film noir.
@elrond70 Yes...and what a great monster Mr. Barlow was...it helps a bit that character actor Reggie Nalder was a tad frightening BEFORE he was put in this effective makeup...I worked with a dude who's last name was Barlow, and I'd do my best James Mason to talk to him...
Salems lot is an awesome book. And it gives you the chills, alot actually.... But this scene is scarier than any of those chills. God i hate this guy :( I just kicked with both my legs into the desk and landed in the wall behind me. It was that scary.....
When i first saw this scene ALL them years ago, i had to hide behind my big brother. THE UTTER TERROR THAT I FELT AT THE TIME...Almost shat myself..love it.
bringing up twilight in every vampire clip is only making it more famous.. and vampires aren't real, writers can do whatever they want to the vampire mythology. Anne Rice's version of vampires is different than stephen king's version, and stephanie meyers has her own version of vampires.
Great vampires in this series, good to see a 'proper' vampire instead of the wussy, emo rubbish that we get served these days in insipid movies like the Twilight series.
Still the scariest vampire ever created for cinema. I saw it as a kid on T.V. And now again. Same effect, 7 foot vampire is scaryI am going to be Mr. Barlow for halloween This year, fuck it! As for Twilight it makes Vampires everywere want to run into a stake!
My grandma said she watched this when it was a TV series in the late 70s, she was on her own in the dark and has never screamed/jumped so much in her life, I laughed at her and then did exactly the same when I watched it! bloody scary and realistic (if vampires where real) for 1979! :O
@JordanEmonds ehhehe my parents let me watch this film in 1979 when I was just 6 years old, what were they thinking? looooool I fell off the sofa and didn't know where to run, then laughed about it days later, still love this film
Excellent! THIS is what a vampire should be. Before Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, in historical lore, vampires were reanimated corpses, perversions of the life & death cycle, or evil creatures that may have once been human. This movie captures that essence. Twilight is a piece of ~@%*
@TainoMantis Well, actually they based Barlows looks on the Nosferatu-film from 1922. The film is a spoof of Dracula, the changed the character names in that film because they couldn't get the rights for the book. Count Orlok, the Dracula character of Nosferatu looks exactly like this, minus the blue face.
Yes, I know. I was referring to vampire mythology throughout human history before Bram Stoker wrote the original "Dracula". Bram Stoker, as a writer, was influenced by the times he lived in and introduced romantic sub tones into his classic story. However, the concept of vampires is ancient and is found in many different old societies throughout the world. Those myths portrayed vampires as living corpses, un-Natural aberrations, or monsters.
Yep, it's close but for jump out your seat and shit yourself value this even beats American Werewolf In London's dream sequence (yellow eyed and fanged bloke jolting awake in hospital bed in the middle of the woods. Love the book and the original two-part tv series of this, haven't checked out the remake but don't think I'll bother.
Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to take a good look at Mr Barlow. Now that's a real vampire, not the sparkly people a certain... uh... woman named Stephenie Meyer has invented. I prefer ugly vampires over Robert Pattinson-ish vampires. At least they look "good", paradoxically enough.
How did Mr. Barlow get into the jail? Did he have to go through a security checkpoint? Did he have to fill out a NOK or family member form to see Ned the Plumber?
Finally someone who's civilized and provides the argument through proper language. Well the last line of my original comment suggested that I was impersonating someone who uses that kind of language. My name is Kosta just so you don't have to write my YouTube user name again. I hate and I mean absolutely hate Twilight and anything associated with it. If I misled you to believe otherwise I apologise
I sent an email to Tobe Hooper many years ago to thank him for scaring us all with this film. Didn't expect a reply but his assistant got back to me and said they would pass the message on. :))
Terrifying .... though ironic that the book portrays Barlow as more of a human looking vampire that talks .... and the folks behind the movie wanted the movie Barlow to be more like the German Nosferatu, and with no speaking lines. I think in this respect they made the movie way more horrifying.
@kosmot199 wow i read the book few years ago one of stephen kings best, the whole book had an atmosphere which sets it apart from the movie, but i still love the movie for being in that classic 70's horror, bit cheesy but still creepy and amazing set. straker was my favourite though, he was always james mason in the book!
This scene is the no.1 "scary moment" of ANY horror film EVER, even topping the 2"jump up" scenes in Jaws 1, etc. Other films may be scarier as a whole, but this one scene is unbeatable. Nobody sees it for the first time without being taken aback!
Well there you go, ha ha! To me that's what a vampire should look like. Not an erotic temptress with pointed teeth, in fact not a female at all. Male and gruesome! That last "Dracula" remake (Winona Ryder etc.) had him as a long haired heartbroken lover - ridiculous! Dracula = Horror! So say I!
Now I know why my father(who is one of the toughest guys I know in my life) was scared to death of this guy as a child,THIS CRAP WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES!!

Kurt Barlow is better than Bedward Cullen for several reasons:
1. He doesn't sparkle.

3. If Kurt Barlow fought Kurt Barlow, Ed Cullen would lose.
I could go on but I won't. In conclusion:

@kosmot199 wow i read the book few years ago one of stephen kings best, the whole book had an atmosphere which sets it apart from the movie, but i still love the movie for being in that classic 70's horror, bit cheesy but still creepy and amazing set. straker was my favourite though, he was always james mason in the book!

Now that's a vampire!
I'm so sick of the gay, blouse wearing, moody, "misunderstood", sulking vampires of the last 20 years.

This scene is the no.1 "scary moment" of ANY horror film EVER, even topping the 2"jump up" scenes in Jaws 1, etc. Other films may be scarier as a whole, but this one scene is unbeatable. Nobody sees it for the first time without being taken aback!

Well and totally agree with that one, still makes me jump when he suddenly appears (with music and shriek)...and Im 36 and trained ninja!!

So say I!
