A smoothbore flintlock is about as fast as you can get with a muzzleloader. with percussion, you have to get these friggin small caps out and on the nipple, and first remove the old cap. that costs time. And with the minie-Bullet, you are by most manual required to extract the ball from the paper before you load the bulled. that too costs time.

@ericwsmith22 now get 4 shots off in a minute with bullets wizzing over your head and cannon balls exploding around you. and yes obviously they will shoot 98% of the time if you regularly clean it, not to mention he was just trying ot prove a point. that on a battlefield in the conditions they lived in. the muskets wont be very clean, and will be VERY prone to misfire. just like the M16s, if they are clean they almost never jam, fire off hundreds of rounds, drag it through the dirt and it jams

@cptmiche well, conditions of war were diffrent back then, and a musket is far less complicated than a m16. very easy to clean, and i hear that misfire shit all the time. if you are halfway serious into these guns, you know how easy it is to get them working neatly.

A good Corps of british Soldiers would be expected to fire at least 6 times in two minutes, 7 being the norm. aand that is in Formation. If you are on your own and just blaze away, 4 or 5 a minute are feasible with sufficient practice.

Your firelock should not misfire 50% of the time. Mine fires almost everytime. If it doesn't you have a problem. Either your flint is dull. or your touch hole is clogged. There may be other reasons.

Anyways the americans also used a kentucky long rifle, which takes a long time to load but pretty accurate, much more accurate then a musket.

In contrast, every Prussian soldier was expected to fire 5 rounds a minute. The British army's downfall was its poor leadership.
