I watched it in both versions, and I personally prefer the Japanese ver. While I gladly can accept and appreciate the effort it took to make this, I believe the English dub didn't capture BECK in it's entirety. Then again it might just be my opinion. The English dub's not that bad, either.
@SpiritsRise Then enlighten me. How exactly is this anywhere near good dubbing? Chiba's singing sounds much more bearable undubbed. The person singing in place of the original is a horrible singer
@SpiritsRise I'm well aware of the voice actor's identity, but I still have to say I don't like his singing. I have no problem with it if he doesn't sing. Just keep the singing to the singers
@SpiritsRise For one, I don't have a problem with the japanese dub due to the fact that everything sung in this song is in english. I was also under the impression that either Typhoon24 or The Beat Crusaders did most of the songs on the OST. Also, try not to get butthurt; this is just my opinion.
@SpiritsRise lol weeaboo? Well, if you can't take opinions, you're obviously butthurt, and I wouldn't be calling people weeaboos with a profile like yours :)
@SpiritsRise Well, the same can be said about not liking a dub. Just because I don't like the singing doesn't make me a weeaboo. And I am not hating on the show, I happen to be a bit of a fan of Beck. I simply just don't like the dub for this song. If you're annoyed by an opinion, then too bad for you lol
Chiba is the same guy from Yu yu hakusho, yurameshi. He really fits the role perfectly. The singing rocks and really if you don't like the english version here is what you do. Don't listen to it. I know I know its a scary idea. If you have nothing better to do than say anime dub music sucks on youtube you should seriously reconsider what your doing with your life. Which is probably nothing. Go listen to the Engrish version if you love it so much.
@Kalvinwarrior have you really herd the jap dubs of the songs are really bad (only i got a feeling is good) and if you do not like the eng dub watch the jap dub.
Seriously you only have to listen to 5 minutes of this to appreciate how much EFFORT was put into the english voice version. Imagine the number of actors, the number of ours, and the number of SONGS recorded especially for this release. You japanese purists who argue that "NOTHING beats the original" are insulting the artists who put that time an effort into a show with very limited popularity in the US and possibly even making it more difficult for quality shows to be released overseas.
@AutumnDevi I wouldn't say the show had "very limited popularity." It was all over Much Music during it's initial run, sometimes as much as 5-6 runs per day. I didn't have MTV but I'm sure MTV played it as well. It was an anime that was syndicated on many music stations, so it probably had millions of viewers.
Clean vocals don't make a song good.....Sometimes you need that strained and haggard tone to get a point across. In this case...yeah if they could have used the japanese voice for Chiba it would have been better but I like how they tried to do it anyway.
This is one of the few dubs that do singing right. So shut up, open your ears, and stop your elitist snobbishness bashing others' enjoyment of the dub. Some dubs are decent. Get over it and stop assuming that the subs are the only way to watch anime, you weeaboo.

The band who performed the English dub have no right to put their own "feelings" into the song since they didnt create the song, chiba's rap sections shoulda stayed like the original cos it was created to be like that. And Yes there is proof because Anime fan in general watch the Japanese version of Beck and even prefer the dub due to the music and excellent voice acting. What your doing is hating,

I'm not "hating" it is a fact that most dubs are crap when the company can and should do a better job at it, therefore WE have the right to complain about the difference and that isnt "hating". Hating is when you bitch with no reason.
The dubs for the songs doesn't fit the rhythm of the music alot of the time so that makes it crap, its a technical thing.
And i think you need to read what i said properly and also read the comment i replied to.
But your point fails because Dubs don't ALWAYS do a bad job, have you forgotten about anime that actually have good dubs. Outlaw star? Cowboybebop? Wolf rain? DBZ?! Really dude, your just hating on dubs and bitching about it for no reason because they never included this or that. Beck's dubbing was praised by millions of anime fans, AGAIN we are a western culture therefore the anime has to ADAPT to our way of music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are a fool, nothing of what i have said implies that I'm arguing against localization; sure adapt and what not, but do a good job of it and if you don't then dont be surprised that people will complain.
Those anime series you mentioned are the best of the worst (DBZ dub is pretty bad), they still did a bad job on them.
Whether or no Beck's dub was praised, it doesn't change the fact that the dub doesn't fit the rhythm of the music. The "good dub" bar is set pretty low after all.
People i think your reading too much into it think of it this way, theres two different versions for us to listen to now if we like it we like it dont type a whole book disscusing it i like the english one i havent heard the japenesse one but even if i do hear it ill probably end up liking both so if u dont like it dont listen to it
do you here what you said. They shouldn't add they're own feeling to a song since they didn't create it. So by that logic you're saying people like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin have no right to do that because some of their best songs weren't created by them, get a fucking clue.
This is an anime not a song.A personal interpretation of a song, a cover or playing a composition not created by you to be judge on musical merits is different than localizing a foreign tv show with music on it. The feelings added to the songs is part of the anime so if you screw with the feeling you screw originality of the anime. They are supposed to localize not reinterpret. By my logic they have no right to add their own feeling cos this is more than a song and not a reinterpretation.
no dude, this song is done by a real band so saying this song is awesome is perfectly fine. Besides that would be like saying no one can ever say the song "What I've done" by Linkin Park is awesome since it was shown on Transformers movie. Just because a song is in a show doesn't mean it can't be judged or have feeling in it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You need to read what we've said thoroughly before you comment. This is about the original songs created for the anime being butchered for the english dub.
OMG! Would you people quit with your complaining? I like BOTH the japanese and enlish dubs. I don't care what you think of my comment, but they already dubbed it and there's NOTHING any of us can do about it.
I guess fans are divided evenly. So people please can you stop posting stupid comments like, "this has no feeling", "They ruined the show", or "Chibas english dub sucks". No one wants to hear you bitch so just watch the japaness version already.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the english dub is crap! i hate it. theres no feeling. chiba is really bad and fits better. sure koyukis voice isnt that very good, but the english singer isnt better either, and i hate it when americans laugh about bad english. then i laugh about the english dubbed version because they can't pronounce japanese names... so vote for RAW oder subbed versions (btw all dubbed version are shit, the german dubbs arent good either, or any other language spanish, france or whatever)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There's no feeling? What the hell is that supposed to mean? If you're referring to the Japanese tendency to yell all the freaking time, then that's just stupid.
i like the english dubb for a few reasons ive listenned to the english and japanese versions comparatively and chiba has more of a punk voice in the english version and i like that cuz the way the music sounds has a taste of punk in it and i like the english dubb for that
I think they only made the soundtrack for the Japanese version(which IMO is a lot better than the English songs) I'm not sure where you can get them now.
The songs that have english in it are better sung by english singers (seriously a japanese guy saying Typhoon 24 is ridiculous) but aside from that, i think the japanese is equal
I'm trying to figure out how to adapt it to a movie. i've got a few pages written but its hard cause i've gotta figure out what to cut to keep it short. I want some input on what to cut.
The Jaguar part.
The school festival
Or altering some parts
Like Saku being the drummer from the get go.
Any input will be nice.
The opening credits would be the same as the show. ;p
sounds great man but i wouldnt make saku the drummer from the start because him and koyuki become friends later on is a one of the many sources that drives koyuki to get back into music and the band.but cutting the festival wouldnt be that bad.but thats just my input.
dude, to think that they started out as a little band that played in live houses,...i know it's just a show, but that happens in real life, you know! crazy shiz, man.

I think this series was so horribly handled. The manga was so much more lively than the animation. No amount of bombastic music could save how dead and static everyone seems in this. The dialogue feels WAY too robotic, even in the original undubbed clips, that you can almost feel the English VAs straining to make it work.
Just calling it like I see it. The manga had so much more snap, which is ironic because there is no sound.
The overall atmosphere of the anime was overly serious and detracted from the humor that Sakuishi put it in. Even the regular Japanese voices sounded awkward and badly paced.
Music is meh at best. You never hear "Yukio's" guitar, if at all (it sounds like they just simply doubled the Les Paul guitar parts). Bassline is appropriately funky though.
if you call it like you see it then go get you damn eyes checked i know everyone has a right to an opinion but you shouldn't say shit like that its stupid and pointless
obviously i knew what u -.- i just didnt agree i could care less i mean most manga does have more effect on a person than an anime anyway but it doesnt mean the animation can ruin the series how bout this U REANIMATE BECK AND GET BACK TO EVERYONE WHEN IT FINISHED
"If you don't think X did a good job why don't you do it" is a grade school argument. Obviously I don't live in Japan and have access to quality animators (though if I did, I wouldn't be using the guys who animated MEDABOTS. Seriously, compare the two and get back at me. You'll see what I mean.)
Don't get me wrong, there are some good parts here. I'm just tired of people claiming ZOMG BECK IS AWESUM HATERS STFU despite the glaring flaws in the series.
The guy with the glasses sounds like a robot in 0:41. I think japanese version is much better, they take so much care to the voices. In this english version, Chiba has a very bad voice...
This happens to be one of the few animes in which I prefer English. I mean, the characters are made in the image of English speaking artists and the songs are more American and England based, that's why Beck sold more albums in America then in Japan.
@AutumnDevi @RikuReplicate
I watched it in both versions, and I personally prefer the Japanese ver. While I gladly can accept and appreciate the effort it took to make this, I believe the English dub didn't capture BECK in it's entirety. Then again it might just be my opinion. The English dub's not that bad, either.

And i think you need to read what i said properly and also read the comment i replied to.
My point is that they always do a bad job at dubs
Groundeyes 2 years ago
But your point fails because Dubs don't ALWAYS do a bad job, have you forgotten about anime that actually have good dubs. Outlaw star? Cowboybebop? Wolf rain? DBZ?! Really dude, your just hating on dubs and bitching about it for no reason because they never included this or that. Beck's dubbing was praised by millions of anime fans, AGAIN we are a western culture therefore the anime has to ADAPT to our way of music.

So by that logic you're saying people like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin have no right to do that because some of their best songs weren't created by them, get a fucking clue.
jfs1408 2 years ago
This is an anime not a song.A personal interpretation of a song, a cover or playing a composition not created by you to be judge on musical merits is different than localizing a foreign tv show with music on it. The feelings added to the songs is part of the anime so if you screw with the feeling you screw originality of the anime. They are supposed to localize not reinterpret. By my logic they have no right to add their own feeling cos this is more than a song and not a reinterpretation.
Groundeyes 2 years ago
no dude, this song is done by a real band so saying this song is awesome is perfectly fine. Besides that would be like saying no one can ever say the song "What I've done" by Linkin Park is awesome since it was shown on Transformers movie. Just because a song is in a show doesn't mean it can't be judged or have feeling in it.

No one wants to hear you bitch so just watch the japaness version already.

the english dub is crap! i hate it. theres no feeling. chiba is really bad and fits better. sure koyukis voice isnt that very good, but the english singer isnt better either, and i hate it when americans laugh about bad english. then i laugh about the english dubbed version because they can't pronounce japanese names... so vote for RAW oder subbed versions (btw all dubbed version are shit, the german dubbs arent good either, or any other language spanish, france or whatever)

The opening credits would be the same as the show. ;p
nicksantrizos555 3 years ago
sounds great man but i wouldnt make saku the drummer from the start because him and koyuki become friends later on is a one of the many sources that drives koyuki to get back into music and the band.but cutting the festival wouldnt be that bad.but thats just my input.

dude, to think that they started out as a little band that played in live houses,...i know it's just a show, but that happens in real life, you know! crazy shiz, man.

I think this series was so horribly handled. The manga was so much more lively than the animation. No amount of bombastic music could save how dead and static everyone seems in this. The dialogue feels WAY too robotic, even in the original undubbed clips, that you can almost feel the English VAs straining to make it work.
Decent music, at least.
BirdmanDeuce26 3 years ago
fuck u buddy the manga was good but the anime is inspiring and its got some bad ass music not decent bad ass as in totally fucking awesome.
So suck it you little girl!
JaYCole897 3 years ago
Nice of you to dig up a comment from ONE MONTH AGO.
The anime was crap. Simple as that. ANYONE could see that, except for prepubescent fanboys.
BirdmanDeuce26 3 years ago
Birdman...ur crap and ANYONE can see that
undergroundrevolt 3 years ago
Just calling it like I see it. The manga had so much more snap, which is ironic because there is no sound.
The overall atmosphere of the anime was overly serious and detracted from the humor that Sakuishi put it in. Even the regular Japanese voices sounded awkward and badly paced.
Music is meh at best. You never hear "Yukio's" guitar, if at all (it sounds like they just simply doubled the Les Paul guitar parts). Bassline is appropriately funky though.
BirdmanDeuce26 3 years ago
u got a point there........-.-
undergroundrevolt 3 years ago
if you call it like you see it then go get you damn eyes checked i know everyone has a right to an opinion but you shouldn't say shit like that its stupid and pointless
loopyfistfighter1 3 years ago
Right:
0:09 Chiba is freeze framed despite that part of the song being a spoken word section. Go ahead, check with the original. It's not the VA's fault.
0:35 The guy is supposed to be shouting. Why is he YAWNING?
0:37 In this scene in the manga, Satou and the GS man are ecstatic at the # of people. Why are they extremely flat and disinterested?
Face it. Whoever animated this, shit on a promising series. They cut corners on EVERYTHING except the music and even that's being too nice.
BirdmanDeuce26 3 years ago

I'll say it again.
WHOEVER ANIMATED THIS RUINED THE SERIES BY TAKING SHORTCUTS ON EVERYTHING POSSIBLE EXCEPT FOR THE MUSIC.
BirdmanDeuce26 3 years ago
obviously i knew what u -.- i just didnt agree i could care less i mean most manga does have more effect on a person than an anime anyway but it doesnt mean the animation can ruin the series how bout this U REANIMATE BECK AND GET BACK TO EVERYONE WHEN IT FINISHED
undergroundrevolt 3 years ago
"If you don't think X did a good job why don't you do it" is a grade school argument. Obviously I don't live in Japan and have access to quality animators (though if I did, I wouldn't be using the guys who animated MEDABOTS. Seriously, compare the two and get back at me. You'll see what I mean.)
Don't get me wrong, there are some good parts here. I'm just tired of people claiming ZOMG BECK IS AWESUM HATERS STFU despite the glaring flaws in the series.
You're a musician. Have high standards.

This happens to be one of the few animes in which I prefer English. I mean, the characters are made in the image of English speaking artists and the songs are more American and England based, that's why Beck sold more albums in America then in Japan.
