  • I LOVE how the prisoner chucks the remote

  • when the "ships" are down ... those civilized people will eat each other !! BRAINGASM !!

  • this was so smart of the joker. and the people are noble. who knows what people would do in this situation?

  • dam. reminds me a bit of 2012

  • This scene was probably more impressive than any "choice" scene from the Saw movies

  • his relationship with batman became more and more powerful to challenge his sanity. Why can the batman nevr kill him? Because he was the only vilain that managed to affect him psychologically to prove that their characters are very much alike. the joker put gotham to the test, he wasnt able to prove thats his madness was not madness and merely the same thoughts of a self conscience member of the public. but that dosnt mean its not true.....

  • This is one of the most dramatic and coolest scenes i've ever seen. Really well done

This scene alone makes me wanna see The Dark Knight Rises, because i don't know how they will top this.

  • how the hell can The Dark Knight Rises top this?

  • @elcap22 It can try

  • This was one of the most awesome and epic scenes I've ever seen on film.

At this point, it didn't matter that Dent was corrupted or that the Joker lived. The Joker had FAILED miserably. And do you know what was the best thing about it? Batman wasn't responsible for it, the Gotham police department wasn't responsible for it.

No, the ones responsible for defeating the Joker were the ordinary people of Gotham City.

    So. Bad. Ass.

  • @IAmTheStig320 joker was defeated symbolically in this scene, and that compensates the dozens of real victories he had during the movie?, all the people he murdered, the infrastructure he destroyed?

  • @crazytalkerman The Jokers interntion was to bring out the shadow side of humanity. Even if the Joker claimed to not have plans, everything he'd done lead up to this. The point of this was to destroy all hope- to show people will do whatever they can to survive, and simultaneoulsy prove with Harvey that even the truly heroic can be brought down to his level. He wanted to prove humanity was as ugly as him and failed. So I think the Batman (at least partially) won.

  • @IamIndeedLayingAnEgg so, you think if the civilians boat blows up, that´s not the worst case scenario?

  • its all game theory...

  • you just know, everyone would scramble to blow each other up in real life

  • @trollope4lyf2k8 I agree with you, this scene is bullshit

  • SAW.

  • DAMN DEBO STILL IN JAIL?!?!?!

  • Comment removed

  • (3:11) Dear Nolan: NOBODY TALKS LIKE THAT!!!!

  • Does anyone know the name of the actor sitting down at 2:51? I've seen him before but cant find his name..

  • My moms friend is in this movie, hes a prisoner :3

  • The Joker is a genius!

  • "Well now, who are you to decide? We oughta talk this over, at least!" - What a douche!

  • How did The Joker smuggle a hundred barrels without no one noticed?

  • any thoughts as to why The Joker would be reading the threat from his notes rather than just speaking at 2:30 ? What could that mean? that he has bad memory or that he was maybe just following orders? :-/

  • @nemirc I imagine having the Joker reading his lines was just supposed to be a little funny.

  • is it just me, or does everytime batman has his suit thing on, he sounds like he has throat cancer... kinda wierd

  • am i the only one to think that as a twist that whoever was to push the detonator would have blown up their own boat?

  • No, you are not the only one who has though about that. Ever since I saw the movie I have been questioning it. If the Joker can trick Batman into saving Harvey Dent instead of Rachel from the warehouse, then wouldn't he be smart enough to trick passengers of the boats into thinking the detonator went to other boat instead of their own. Something to think about.

  • No, you are not the only one. If i am in the civilians boat and i hear the joker say that, i would immediately think that the joker want the people in those boats to kill themselves accidentally, instead of what happens in this movie, where they almost start making list of the pros and cons of letting the other people kill them

  • @xxxxxxsusiexxxxxx Nope! I did too.

  • @xxxxxxsusiexxxxxx No, I don't think so because Joker wanted to crush the people's faith in each other. If it was a trick, and the people in one boat pushed the button and killed themselves, people would have martydomed them and villified the other because they wouldn't have known the truth about it. But it was true and they blew it, they would all feel guilty and ashamed altogether, both the survivors and the city.

  • this reminds me alot of the classic saw traps

  • If one "good" person detonated the other boat, then that proves they're far worse than the ones riding that boat, in chains.

  • what if u knew for sure that the other boat would detonate the bomd. Wouldn t u do it before them?

  • No, because then I'd have to live with it for the rest of my life. Which the prisoners didn't want either.

  • So u would prefer to die then to live with it for the rest of your life? This is exactly like a "saw" moment for me. Live or die, make your choice

  • id die for anyone.

  • I actually asked my mom a question similar to this scene. I asked her if she was in this situation and she had a choice would she blow up the other boat or not? she said she wouldn't blow up the boat. maybe I should ask my other family members the same question but knowing their morals and beliefs, they wouldn't do it. but I can't help but wonder if they would still think about it just a little.

  • This is a "Democratic vs Republican" analogy.

See if you can catch my point...

  • Tonight you're all going to be part of a social experiment...

  • YEah, Jokers a Sociologist.

  • This is a scene that I consider the best in the last 3 years of my life man! This rocks! When I watched this scene in the cinema, I can't even shake my hand, so intense man!

  • Just like the Joker says "You'll see......when the chips are down, these uh....these civilized people....they'll eat each other..."

The 'civilized' people on the so called 'good boat' were just as anxious and trigger-happy. Many on this boat were judging the prisoners as if they are all bad people at the core, but this scene proves that some of these 'bad people' have a profound sense of goodness and spirituality instilled in them.

I get chills when he throws the detonator out of the boat

  • I wish there was a deleted scene where the "citizens" press the button, except that it turns out that they had the remote to their own boat.

  • I thought so when i saw the movie for the forst time. you know, joker tells that you could blow up the other boat, but then you make yourself explode instead...

  • @dybeen with a mind like the joker that would probably be the case

  • Yeah, this proves that not everyone that does bad doesnt mean that they have no good in them, unlike the joker

  • It doesn't prove anything, the people are not real, it's a movie >.>

  • Well I think it kind of does. Some people just can't live with having taken the life of another whether they had to or if it was accidental.

  • You guys get to do an essay on this scene? Wow, that is cool.

I would write something like "It goes to show that our stereostypes and labels about the so called 'bad guys' can be misleading, as this scene proves that even self-proclaimed 'civilized people' can be just as dangerous when the chips are down."

  • we're doing this scene as part of a essay at school aaaand i dont understand lol :S

why are they all on the two boats anyway?

someone pleease answer, cause its for my coursework (: x

  • The Joker announces to the public that anyone left in Gotham at nightfall will be subject to his rule. With the bridges and tunnels out of the city closed due to a warning by the Joker, authorities begin evacuating people by ferry. The Joker has explosives placed on two of the ferries—one ferry with convicts, who were evacuated in an effort to keep the Joker from freeing them, and the other with civilians.

  • thanks, you helped loads (: x

  • Prisoner's on one side, citizens on the other, there moving them off the island so because the joker just treatened to kill them all :)

  • @AlisonLouiseTbh I realize you left this comment two years ago, but I was really curious, how did that essay go? did you understand the scene in the end?

  • Human factor in this moment can't stop my tears, cause its so great, especially moment with the big thug, he throw away difference between them..

  • i found out that they had their own detonator so if the citizens pulled it they blow up their own ship same with the cons

  • really? how? they had each others detonators, didn't they??

  • well its the fastest way to kill everyone cause if i were the joker id want them all dead so pull the trigger your own ship blows upr

  • That would make some sense, that's the kind of thing the Joker would do here, but blowing up the other boat is the kind of action that he would accept and reward.

  • its easy to say "oh i would of blown them up the first chance i got" now, but if you were on a boat, with a swtich controling dozens of lives, you wouldnt think the same.

  • Of course that logic also works both ways. It's easy to act noble and say "oh no, I would never blow up the other boat just to save my own life" but then when the time comes, it's easy for cowardice to kick in and blow them all to pieces.

  • "every time you eat a coat

    throw away your winter toad"

  • my grandma's in this!! :D

  • wich is ur grandma

  • relly? :) cool :D

  • sick that is awesome!

  • lol i know!!

she's the blonde one, uhm. can see her at 0:31 and like, 2:00 lol. ah epic. she doesn't even TELL US when she does this, i almost screamed and pointed at the screen in the cinema. i held it back as a little yelp instead so people looked at me funny :P

  • lol how did she get to be in it? Is she an actor or did they just ask for volunteers?

  • That's fucking awesome!

  • When Morgan Friedman first saw the cellphone/tv machine and said "that's too much power for one man to have," it was a dig at Google in general and Google street view, in particular.

  • look at 2:23, i have a video on that shot

  • who is the big tank guy that throws away the remote? iv seen him in a few movies. was he in the green mile too?

  • A few huh? Zeus, or big tank guy lol, has been in over 150 movies and tv shows.

  • That's not the guy from the green mile. But he's been in tons of movies in minor roles. Usually black movies.

  • Tiny Lister.

  • awesome quality!

  • he was expecting that he can turn every good people in bad ones, like he did whit Harvey, the detonator from the prisoners ferry was trowed overboard and the the guy from the citizens ferry was almost going to do it... great twists

  • I think that eitherway The Joker would have made each remote blow up the boat that they belonged to, to show that somebody's greed and selfish, heartless attitude would lead to their demise.

The people on each boat should have easily realized this, but the moment corrupted their judgment and would have pushed them to activating the remote. However, the man on the citizen boat didn't have the heart to do it, and the man on the prisoner boat was selfless and threw it out the window, showing good.

  • i know......also that girl that said.."They had their chances" didnt think about the cops/guards that were on the boat also.

  • deebo

  • Game theory

  • The Joker was absolutely right. Given the circumstances, ANYONE can be as ugly as him (except for a select few, of course).

  • I don't know though. I don't think I could go through killing others just to ensure my own survival. Those "selected few" are more than you think.

  • That's because you've never actually had to do it. But let's face it; it's easy to be all noble and say "Oh no, I would never kill a human being just to save myself," but then when you're actually put to the test, cowardice kicks in and you push the button. Personally I can't say for certain that I wouldn't do it, and people have gone bad for more trivial reasons than survival.

  • I didn't say for certain that I wouldn't do it I just don't think I would based on what I know about myself. Like I said before it all depends on the kind of person you are. I have heard that some people regard honour to be more important than life itself so who knows? The point is humans in any situation are capable of doing both evil and good things we are neither completely one or the another. Also some people like to say we're no better than animals but even animals are capable of kindness.

  • It is actually a very interesting experiment, how much do we trust each other and why do we trust each other?

I am just afraid in the real world (if we can use such a fraze in a situation like this) both boats would have pushed the remote.

  • i think 911 was a good example that humanity is still intact in people... everyone helped out each other in that situation..

  • Don't be so sure. People can sometimes surprise you with what they do. It all depend really on what kind of a person you are. I think this scene ironically calls back to what the joker said earlier about when people are facing death they show you who you really are. Well that's what happens here but not like he expected.

  • dude its DEEBO!
