how do you know the pilgrims destroyed their treaty with the indians it was kind of a mutual hate thing. do you suspose the indians on the east coast lived in peac with nature all the time. They were very well versed in the arts of war.
I make a point to watch this before every Thanksgiving dinner I have with my family. I've got this and the rest of the "This Is America, Charlie Brown" series on DVD, which I bought at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC in 2007.
it propaganda for the "we is the best country in the world" set and as time has passed more of what really went on is being discovered making this obsolete.
only problem is it taught a generation or two fabrications of what they wished happened. you lie for long enough it can become the truth which is terrible.
i hope one day people will accept things like a lot of the roman statues where painted bright gaudy colours, or that raptors had feathers. because even if it doesn't matter to most people it is the truth and should be remembered.
Two large myths in this short film: First - The Pilgrims did not go for religious freedom - they had that in Holland where they spent 12 years prior to leaving for America
Second: they did not share the profits with the money lenders in England - the stock holders took everything as payment to fund the project.
I never actually saw this special before, but I DO know it was on the "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" DVD and it was shown on ABC along with "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving."
The U.S. has certainly come a long way through history. Too bad those accomplishments have done nothing about Hollywood's emphasis on bullying and misandry in art and entertainment.
Not a shabby end to the Peanuts specials and whatnot of the 1980s. Now, off to the 1990s!
On a side note, I just remembered that some details about history may be off here. For example, I thought natives in South America came up with basketball...never mind. It's quite surprising to see PP in particular smarter than average, greatly contrasting her final strip appearances.
Hah. Who says this franchise never discussed race?
The Li'l Folks may seem out of place in some of these settings, but we hafta take into account that that's just how conditions were in those times. In fact, Part 4 and onward make some of these adventures out to be dreams. Nevertheless, don't try using this mini-series to justify whitewater rafting or motocross, okay?
Wait, a Peanuts strip appearing in a Peanuts cartoon? And a character mentioning Vince Guaraldi and humming the theme? Great galloping existentialism! Talk about breaking the fourth wall! And the 1960s as turbulent? I'm surprised they didn't take it further by declaring that period as their strip's golden years like most readers do, or the fact that that's when they started appearing on television. :D
Especially since he lived through many of these events and was a war veteran himself. In wake of that face-slap known as What Have We Learned, the torture of certain characters is thankfully, dramatically reduced so it doesn't get in the way of the lessons conveyed.
Mostly a series of instructional videos best watched in history class or at a library, but kudos to Schulz and his pals once again. They certainly knew how ta take serious subjects; research 'em well; and treat them with tender-loving care. Schulz LOVED his U.S. history, and it shows in both television and the comics.
LoL. I never thought that I would use this to write a short story. It's for a Social Studies project and I'm writing a short story about the Mayflower and the Pilgrims and... whatnot. This is actually quite helpful.
how does that make them different from anyone else in that period. Starting with the Catholic Church, then going to Henry the 8th, Mary Tudor, Elizabeth...etc
they all tried to control what people and used torture all the time.
Nevertheless, the pilgrims slowly started destroying the treaty they made with the Natives and then started killing them...a 50 year treaty is nothing...it was just time for the Pilgrims to build up their forces and fortifications.
They were imprisoned, tortured, and sometimes put to death because King James wanted to dictate every thing regarding the church services and their beliefs.
I'd say that was persecution.
Don't confuse the Pilgrims (Separatists) with the Puritans. The Puritans were the true "intolerant" ones. In fact, they were in power in England after they had King James' son beheaded.
I am surprised the fact the Pilgrims' faith in God is mentioned doesn't get this removed or keep it from being aired on TV with the way our nation is today, where we have to be tolerant of everyone's beliefs and feelings.
Don't get me wrong, I'm proud it's in there. Just surprised it's allowed to be shown.
@KBAFourthtime true but Charlie Brown cartoons were known for focus on the kids (the Peanuts gang) and you only heared as you put it the "wa-wa-wa-wa" stuff." from the adults and rarely did you see the adults. you would just hear them off screen. like for example RERUN was allways on the back of his mom's bike but you just saw a body side view or the back of her.

@SpinDashpro Because adults' faces are important in historical episodes, as are their voices rather than that "wa-wa-wa-wa" stuff.
