  • just fully rebuilt my mg 1275 with a few mods gota drop it in my 1971 clubman saloon now hoping for 90+ bhp and in total engines cost about £650

  • 1380cc is how much HP?

  • @elitecssplayer depends what mods have done to the engine. that kind of engine should be around 100-115 hp no more than that. of course you will get more hp if you turboed the engine.

  • very cool. picked up my 1275 today to rebuild into a 1310

  • im about to rebuld the hed on my minis enging, thanks for the iside veiw

  • what is the whole a+ thing about i have recently brought a 1974 mini 1000 salloon and it says a+ engine but i dont understand

  • it just what this seris of engines is called. the a seris goes all the way back to the moris minor. im not sure f the + means anything special though

  • @lamby908 the A+ engine was British leylands idea of getting more bhp out of the normal a series without effecting the torque, the 998 A plus was introduced in 1980.

    A normal A series 998 had 38bhp, the A+ 998 had 40bhp, hope this helps.

  • Hi iv'e got a 1275 A+ sitting in the back of my garage it came out of a 1983 Austin Metro S looks much the same as you engine.Engine number starts with 12H Iv'e been told they were MK 3 Cooper S and clubman GT engines ,nice to one come back to life.

  • i love those engines, very reliable. same cant be said of the gearbox tho

  • awsome video! :D i love a series engines by austin :) there so simple compared to all the modern cars of today

  • wow that thing was disgusting.

    great video, great work

  • what cylinder have you got on this ?

  • nice video, whats the tune playing??

  • nice dude! is it a volvo b20/b18?

  • awesome

  • great video one of my favorites!!!!!!!

  • I have a 64 Austin Cooper witha 1275 high compession engine that is out and at the machine shop now. I found a 1380 big bore kit on Minimania, but it doesn't include a crank or connecting rods so I'm assuming I can use the existing hardware, is this correct and has anyone used this kit and how were you impressed.

  • Yeah thats right im using my original crank and rods, you can get a kit if you like but i only recommend doing thats if you wish to stroke your engine, some people dont like the idea of boring too much so they stroke to be on the safe side... ive been runing this 1380 a+ engine for a year and no problems its my everyday car and i take it to the track, they are tuff little engines but require alot of maintenance to run well... anyway good luck with your engine email me if you have any questins.

  • nice work man

  • nice work man

i just bort me first car its a 73 goner rebuild the engine to any tips for a newbie

    thanks man

  • very nice dude, i hope i can do the same shit on my mini lol

  • about how much does a completely assembled 1275 weigh?

  • I don't know for sure, but I do know that its possible for two grown men to lift it with some effort. I would guess approximetly 400-500 pounds. I know from experience how hard it was to do this when my dad helped me load it onto a truck when I had to transport my mg midget 1275cc engine to a shop some miles away. The mini engine is heavier because it has the gearbox in the sump.

  • Um ...no. A Dodge Viper V10 weighs like 600 pounds so an A series should be MUCH lighter. I found a site that estimated in the 250lb range which sounds more closer to what it should be.

  • The viper engine has a cast aluminum block with cast iron cylinder liners, aluminum heads, and crankcase. The a-series engines are 100% cast iron. 250lb is too light. My girlfriend weighs 200 lbs and with both me and my dad lifting that engine it felt like I was carrying more than 200.

  • OK I found a reliable source (austin rover online) They say in an article on the issigonis 9X that the a-series engine weighs 340 pounds. I'd believe that

  • I swapped a mk2 gti golf for a mini 1380 with a weber engine, still have not collected it...Anyone got any idea of the BHP approx??Cos he was not sure himself...

  • a stock 1275cc engine tuned for a midget in 1970 was about 65 hp. The cooper S engine was rated at 72 hp. MiniMania (dot) com ships tuned 1380cc units that develop 115 hp. Once you supercharge them they get 140hp!

  • hey nice job man! keep on rockin'!

  • yeah really. The engine looked almost like a lost cause at first. Kinda like the "spare" I keep in my garage.

  • Great stuff, i got the opportunity to ride in a 1380 afew months back..stupidly fast! never had so much fun!

would love to do something like that with my mini :)

  • hmm, maybe I should bore out my midget a bit then.

  • Hi jones, yes its great fun, i bet you would get good results for the midget too. personally id be more inclined to leave the midget original, especially as you are out in the states. also, the midget used the basic A engine... its better to overbore an A+ block because they are stiffer and have improved internals. its possible to wind alot of power out of standard bores, ive seen 998 turbos pushing out 120hp on the dyno!

  • HOLY SHIT! I do want to get a bit more out of it and I may need to slightly overbore because my car is rather high milage by now and the bores arent exacly as round as they used to be. Last i checked it was just at the limit before reboring would be needed. Is sleeving a better option?

  • ah, i see. in that case you may want to consider taking the bore out to +0.20thou (first overbore size) which will give you a small increase in capacity to 1293cc but wont effect the integrity of the block and doesnt cost much. sleeving is a good idea for longevity but it has to be done properly and it doesnt come cheap (in england atleast)

if you are thinking about engine overhaul i can highly recommend the book 'tuning the A series' by David vizard. absolute bible!

  • I have the "how to tune mg midget and austin healy sprite" I have heard of the vizzard book. I'll have to get a copy. thanks.
