I had watched LOTSW for a few years when I saw this episode. As this one unfolded I began to realize that Compo (okay - Bill Owen) had actually died. It was as if I'd just found out a dear friend had died. I cried through the rest of the episode (and probably for a while past it) and was depressed for days. The characters (especially Compo and Cleggy) were so endearing is was natural to get emotionally connected to them.
I shall always remember Clegg he is one of the last ones left.
A programme which will be remembered for many years to come.
To all those others who are no longer with us and have given us so much pleasure over the last 37 years then may their dear souls rest in everlasting peace, Thank you for the pleasure you all gave to others!!

It was so touching and the adaptation of the theme tune was beautiful with the orchestra and when Cleggy said we thought you might like one last trip through the hills, I just cracked up. I have to say it wasn't the same without Compo but all the other actors were brilliant. Margaret in Wigan
I only just started watching it a few months ago, when my local PBS started airing some of the episodes [mainly ones from the 80's and 90's]. I got so attached to Compo, so I went and looked up the actor...I was so devastated to know that he [like some other characters I also liked] had already passed on.
Compo and the show have been part of my life and upbringing for most of my life. I can remeber watching it since I was 8. You know times have changed when life stops giving and starts taking.
One wonders what will happen when Clegg dies, God forbid. They may be able to continue it on, but I think if that happens then few will watch the show anymore.
The only man to appear in every episode, but when he goes, the last of the spirit of Last of the Summer Wine will too.
I found out about his death from this episode. It broke my heart. But I'm glad they didn't take the show off. The ten year episode is one of my favorites.
I am glad that the series is on going....the only problem is that here in the United States we do not get the most recent ones....to bad they cannot begin showing them on BBC-America....
He's not the easiest of persons to come across as one of my friends saw him last year in Huddersfield with a long over coat on him. He got the impression from Peter Sallis, "Im tired leave me alone. I'm fed up of people coming up to me"
He's not in it much now anyway as he's old. Frank Thornton and Peter Sallis are secondary characters as it's too expensive for insurance for them to do outdoor scenes. That's why they're never seen outdoors in the recent episodes. I think the new trio are quite funny. Russ Abbot (Hobbo) acts like Brian Wilde did with Foggy.
I met him in March and he was very, very kind to me, a wonderful and lovely man. Everybody can be in a bad mood sometimes, but what I experienced was nothing like that and he wanted me to come back sometime, and I´ll do it in a few weeks! Besides, he was in a Kingdom episode filmed last year (series 3, ep. 1), it´s on Youtube and you´ll be amazed, he had almost nothing but outdoor scenes and much more to do than in LOTSW and he was great! He still has it in him!
And I remember watching the show when I was 6- i'm 29 now and still love it, nowt to be ashamed of at all! KYLEROB19, you've done a splendid job here, ta very much!
Roy Clarke really excelled himself in these few episodes. There were three of them to say goodbye to Compo - do you have the second one, "Surprise at Throstlenest"?
You don't happen to have any episodes of Summer Wine from 1999 and 2000 do you? Episodes like 'How Erroll Flynn Discovered the Secret Scar of Nora Batty' and 'Lipstick and Other Problems'?
why did they get rid of brian wilde aka foggy. he didnt die til 2008

Sad to hear that the BBC are dropping the show.

And now the beeb has announced it will not make a farewell show. What a shoddy way to treat such a long running and well-loved show.

@Gulftastic totally aggree, the bbc has shown little respect to the actors and the viewers.

Bill Owen RIP. The word legend is used far too readily these days, cheapening its value, but Bill Owen was a true legend of the small screen.

It's going to be hard when Peter Sallis dies. He has such a strong wit and endearing personality. I'd love to have a cuppa' with him some day.
