Rear final drive for weight balance, but wouldn't they have to run two axles down the middle of the car, nearly doubling the what-cha-ma-call-it inertia? ..decreasing acceleration?

You know, same reason people put lightened flywheels and accessory drive reduction pulleys on their engines?
