I'm confused on the author (baronnmkd) intentions with this movie, I own this documentary along with a few other Alexander the Great documentaries, however they all, as with this one, just re-enforce the fact that Alexander and the ancient Macedonians identified as ethnic Greeks. I have a different theory about the name Makedonia. Mačedonia, another way pronounced by the slavs in the Balkans. The word Mačor means tomcat- strong and macho, we get our word moč meaning power. The root mačar comes from the balkans. Mača means cat. DONIA might mean river/valley.Many Yugoslav villages have the word Don. Avestan word for River is Don - note the names Danube, Dnieper, Dniester, The Don. Valleys usually have rivers.

well all that u both wrote are theories, acceptable theories. But there is no proof in order to turn this theories into history. Name similarity occurs many times, for example many japanese toponyms are similar to combined greek words. The word macedonia most propably comes from the greek word Maknos(meaning highlanders) with the common greek suffix of -nia, note that spartans who were of the same stock with macedonians(dorian tribe) called their land "Lacedemonia"(see similarities?)
As far as macedonia being greek, i think the correct is macedonia was "hellenistic". The macedonian royal house was accepted as greeks by the rest city-states but the average macedonian people was not. The main reason for this confusion is that according to ancient greeks, being hellenic required not only same blood but hellenic education and ideas. We know that the average macedonian people were not that much educated.
We also know that some greeks called macedonian barbarians, this is not sth new as we find out that many times greek-city states would call another barbarian. Like for example there are many times Athenians called Spartans barbarians and vice versa. So they fought each other.But Macedonia was the most powerful region of Greece and was able to take control of the whole Greece. I'm confused on the author (baronnmkd) intentions with this movie, I own this documentary along with a few other Alexander the Great documentaries, however they all, as with this one, just re-enforce the fact that Alexander and the ancient Macedonians identified as ethnic Greeks. Of course they we're first and foremost Macedonian, but it is pretty clear in this documentary that they were in fact Greek in essence.

Think rationally,how can Slavs come from the cold Siberia and inhabit half Europe,they were around all the time but their language got dominant after the 7 century,Balkan is a mixture of Slavs,Greeks,Illyrians,Thrakians,Macedonians,Paionians,Wallachians etc.Even more,how come there were cities in the ancient kingdoms with slavic words:Bylazora (Bela zora), Pela (Bela),many cities include the verb bel (white) even today (Belgrade).Macedonia (Makedonija) in slavic-majka and dom (mother and home)

I have a different theory about the name Makedonia. Mačedonia, another way pronounced by the slavs in the Balkans. The word Mačor means tomcat- strong and macho, we get our word moč meaning power. The root mačar comes from the balkans. Mača means cat. DONIA might mean river/valley.Many Yugoslav villages have the word Don. Avestan word for River is Don - note the names Danube, Dnieper, Dniester, The Don. Valleys usually have rivers.

@sneighwena It might be silly,but your theory might also be silly regarding the fact very few nations call it Machedonia.However I am happy to see that you also think that there is a possibility that the word has Slavic roots as the languages evolve and change throughout the centuries.Another examples are:Pela (Bela), Bylazora (Bela Zora),Stobi (Stolb,Stubovi) etc.Both theories are possible but I also heard that the word comes from the more ancient word Emathia or Mathia which also means mother.

well all that u both wrote are theories, acceptable theories. But there is no proof in order to turn this theories into history. Name similarity occurs many times, for example many japanese toponyms are similar to combined greek words. The word macedonia most propably comes from the greek word Maknos(meaning highlanders) with the common greek suffix of -nia, note that spartans who were of the same stock with macedonians(dorian tribe) called their land "Lacedemonia"(see similarities?)

As far as macedonia being greek, i think the correct is macedonia was "hellenistic". The macedonian royal house was accepted as greeks by the rest city-states but the average macedonian people was not. The main reason for this confusion is that according to ancient greeks, being hellenic required not only same blood but hellenic education and ideas. We know that the average macedonian people were not that much educated.

We also know that some greeks called macedonian barbarians, this is not sth new as we find out that many times greek-city states would call another barbarian. Like for example there are many times Athenians called Spartans barbarians and vice versa. This is because of political reasons and propaganda, trying to get the support from the rest hellenic world against ur opponet by calling him barbarian and non hellenic.

The new FYROM state has no relation to ancient macedonia, but imo they have a right to call themselfs like that cause they live in these lands for 1000 years, but they should distinguish the difference. I am greek but i cant understand the obsesion with the name, Egypt is also greek name should we try to make egyptians change it? As far Fyrom respects history and aknowledges it i dont have a problem with their name, but it seems they dont.

just the name macedonia doesnt make u macedonian. In ancient times all rational and logical mind would agree that macedonians spoke greek(similar to doric dialect), believed in the greek gods and had the same culture as the rest of greeks. If they were greeks by blood no one knows and no one ever will. What consists an ethnicity is 1 language 2 religion 3 tradition, afterall ethnicity is greek word meaning tradition. You fail to pass in all 3, while greeks fail in 1.

@dimalex8 Your theory that the language u speak makes u belong to that group is completely wrong,u must understand that the language is not a relevant factor in determining the genesis or ethnikum of a certain people.The royal house used the greek language only officially as lingua franca (the same as we use english today).However the spoken language of the people in Macedonia was not greek,it is sure that Paionians had different language than greek,a dialect between Illyrian and Thrakian.

the language spoke by macedonians was greek, we find tombs with greek inscriptions but no sign of other language(like philips tomb in pella). English is lingua franca of today, but i have never seen anyone greek or slavomacedonian having english inscription on his tomb. The paionians were not part of macedonia untill philip conquered them, this doesnt make them macedonians.

You are right in one thing tho, the royal house of macedonia spoke and wrote greek while the people wasnt so much educated. In south macedonia(arount mount olympus) they spoke dorian greek, in north a mix of greek with paionian, in east thracian etc. This is the reason why greeks considered macedonian kings as hellenes but the average people as barbaric(ofcourse this changed after alexander)

in ancient balkans yes, the one who could not speak greek and didnt had greek ideals was considered uneducated and barbarian even if he was greek. This is not sth that is rascist or dissrespectfull, this is sth that plato and aristotle wrote. The term hellenic and greek had diefferent meaning then. We have many times in ancient history that athenians called spartans uneducated and barbarian and vice versa. This doesnt mean that they were not greek.

nope, to conclude today we are all uneducated(with ancient standards). Cause only a little % of greeks know ancient greek. I for example know how to read and understand the original texts but i cannot speak ancient greek and i cannot understand someone who speaks ancient. Yes u are right, we are all the same and we dont know about the national feelings of anients, thats why i said we can only claim cultural heritage.

Philip was a barbarian according demosthenes the athenian(that is one of the main arguments by fyrom) but one thing that most dont know is that demosthenes considered athenians as the only hellenes, he also blamed spartans, corinthians as barbarians. That time athens had a war with macedonia and it was a common thing for them to blame the enemy as barbarian in order to get support by the ionian greeks.

i gave u a defination of ethnicity, its a greek word meaning tradition. The 4 elements that make an ethnic group are: Blood, Language, Tradition, Religion. Thats how Aristotle(who many think was ancient macedonian, he was born in macedonia but in the greek colony of stagira in chalkidiki which was never part of macedonian kingdom) and plato first defined ethicity.
Another thing u got wrong is that greek was not lingua franca untill alexanders death, it became from his death untill 1453

nope, macedonians mixed with everyone, not just u. They mixed with greeks, with bulgarians, with slavs. The point is ur nation has no cultural relation nor linguistic with ancient macedonians (living proof is the ancient macedonian inscription in front of the FYROMS parliament, written in greek). Its like Turks claiming they are Trojans just because they occupy in trojan lands. The point is that greece is the cultural and lingustic most related with ancient macedonia.

we are talking about ancient macedonia and its connection to the new slavic macedonia. I never doubt the fact that there were slavs who felt macedonians or never blamed ur country using the name. But there is one thing using the name and another thing using the history of the name.Yep they were called macedonian and named their language, culture etc. macedonian but it is clear that all this do not have any connection to ancient macedonia.

This doesnt give greece the right to monopoly the name. The problem is that FYROM wants the whole package that comes with the name. The propaganda by some slavomakedonians reached such heights that i have read Cleopatra spoke macedonian, Samuel was macedonian, Orpheus of greek mythology, Mother teressa and many others too. Its time to be logical, nobody can claim he he is by blood descent of ancient macedonians, not even greeks(except some isolated parts in peloponisus like morea and crete)

@dimalex8 Yes it's true that there are people who overreact,they are even mentally obssesed,but still you can not claim all the history and culture on the Balkan peninsula bcs there are arch. findings all over the Balkan and they belong to all Balkan people,not exclusively to Greece.If you were that exclusive and glorious,you wouldn't be on bottom of EU (together with BUL and ROM) and you wouldn't block a neighbour country in EURO-integration just because of a silly issue,my government sucks too

Yes it is true both goverment suck. First in 1991 u offered the solution slavic macedonia, with gligorov stating thattoday macedonians have no connection to the ancient one and the stupid greek goverment(the worst of the century) turn it down. After 15 years greeks offered this solution(along with north macedonia) but ur goverment turn it down and gruevskis infamous speech about how he descent of alexander the great etc.

The history of balkans is split in two categories. the ancient one where there were thracians, illyrians and greeks and the slavic era when the slavs came. The stupid balkan nationalism is what makes us fight like that. There are bulgarians claiming they are descent of thracians, slavomacedonians claim they are descent of macedonians, greeks think they are pure descents of ancients(sth stupid, nobody is pure), albanians think Pyrrhus and alexander were albanians etc.

Having greek flag with swastiga when it is known the history of greeks fighting nazis is disrespectfull to the 1 mil greeks dead by nazis. Having gruevski photos possing with a Fyroms map containig greek lands(like salonika) with the title united macedonia is what made it worst.
