@americanfella this is not true. well, not across the board. my dad is a really good man, and he is a christian. he takes the "gods ways are above ours" quite serious in the way of keeping his vision of god abstract, not saying "god wants this" or "god forbids that". he realizes although he thinks the bible is divinely inspired it is still written by human hands. this causes him to live his life in roughly the same way i do. trying to be as good to the people around him as he can.
Well I never really see prayers for others posted online, other than Bible verses to help strengthen you or a request asking other people pray for them. In the New Testament, Jesus said where there are a group of people His Name, Jesus is certainly among them, and so two is better than one. And Christians don't serve God because they have to, but because they want to. Jesus doesn't force you to do anything but he certainly knows what's best for you.

Not just anyone who prays in public, watch the video properly before jerking your knee next time.

@TheASHBAD But as long as any supposed god does not have any affect on the physical world, it's motivated to claim that is does not exist.
You have to agree that the reasoning that lead up to that claim is solid; Yahweh will not get rid of your garbage. It's easy for you to try if you don't see it as a solid reasoning. :-)

@ladyofire Yeah you're making my point. Meditation is strewn with religious connotations. You can say that "prayer IS meditation" all you want, because that's not what I said. Meditation is not prayer, which is what I'm telling you. I don't care what prayer is or isn't, that's beside the point. Prayer is talking to a theistic god, that's not what meditation is. The statement, "prayer IS meditation, has no bearing on what I said, as it isn't true in the opposite.
Took some action to unite to lobby against religious influence. Otherwise whats the point. Noone is going to listen unless atheists have a voice politically. And the more atheists who unite the stronger voice/influence they will have.
@trixapete I just don't see why we should organise as people who don't believe in something, I can see it having some really negative consequences, such as giving theists more ammunition to call atheism a religion or cult.
@PrivateJoker17 You're overthinking it. Its just a group to speak up for the rights of atheists/secularists. Like the RSPCA represents the rights of children for eg. They can call us a cult if they like, just like most else they say its not true. When the church calls for more creationism, how r atheists to respond to this if they r not organised politically? And how r they going to have a voice worth listening to unless it speaks on behalf of large numbers? Hence join.
@PrivateJoker17 I think the idea is to let politicians know that they dont have to pander to creationists once they are in power and we dont need a country as powerful as America to be run by people who hear god talk to them.
@roseandserene : Me too!! I am going insane reading things that "god"supposedly did or did not do. If we could just (make) "believe"....It's pathetic.
I was doing the "Tebow " praying to my Garbage-Man while watching this, all hail the amazing Garbage-Man, he comes once a week to take away my dirty trash and far more reliable than praying to an Imaginary God (s). My prayers have been answered :)
Since when have christians ever done anything jesus preached anyway. Alot of christians, particularly in america, seem very well off, advocate killing, have strong family groups, hate their enemies and send anyone who disagrees with them to hell. So much for the meek inheriting the earth. They have more in common with the mafia.
i am familiar with that bible verse. Rick Perry is a moron. one day, i will stand on the steps of the capitol building on the national day of prayer and read that bible verse. and all the retarded liberal Christians will run home crying.
@sparks277 it was nearly eradicated, but of course some religious fanatic convinced the last few villages left in Nigeria to be vaccinated, that the vaccine was actually hurting their children. i believe Christopher Hitchens talked about this very incident in one of his later debates on whether religion is or is not a force for good in the world.
You've inspired me. I'm gonna pray to my garbageman, at least that guy gets shit done! In all my years of prayer when I "believed" not one thing ever happened that wouldn't have happened but by chance. At least the garbageman is here once a week and hauls away the inequity of my household. I don't even have to pledge eternal worship to him, just pay my bill every month and shit gets done. Peace!
Base spiritual experiences and meditation are experimental process of the brain. It's important as scientific people to research these things as well; despite the religious connotations that people have tried to create.
@MrIllustratio cont. understood (nueroscience-wise) area of our discourse on things such as character and morality. These are not religion-related superstitions. Neuroscience will one day explain exactly how they work and their nature, while religion will never be proven or supported. Two different things.
@MrIllustratio Learning to meditate, or learning to control the never ending thought process we have all day, everyday, is very beneficial to certain areas of our well being. Spirituality unfortunately is a word under arrest by religious superstition, and I guess that shows. Spirituality and meditation was incorrectly used by the person you replied to. Meditation is a physical and mental process of training your thoughts, and spirituality is simply a word for the not yet understood (nueroscienc
@MrIllustratio That's a bad point though. Meditation is an *actual* process
and has real effects. It has no origins with religion and is nothing like praying to an invisible theist god. Someone such as Sam Harris, who writes on his experience with meditation, is clearly invaluable in the non-believer movement; without someone like him, some people seemingly wouldn't even realize that meditation and spirituality are a separate area than the "supernatural", and can be studied reasonably. Learnin
@ladyofire That's a typical way of incorrectly mixing religion with spirituality. They are very different things. The problem is that spiritual questions are almost always strewn with religious superstition. Prayer and meditation couldn't be further from one another in nature. That's confusion, of a religious kind, right there. Man oh man...
@BER2ERKER Prayer IS meditation whether you refuse to believe it or not. Prayer is a form of meditation...and there are all kinds of meditation practices out there...kinetic or dancing meditation (whirling dervish), yoga, chanting, tai chi...the list goes on. And there is nothing that says that meditation and spirituality or religion shall not mix. So you are incorrect. There are many names of God like there are many forms of meditation.
God already knew your prayers before you were born. God holds mankind responsible for "sins" he knew you would commit before the foundation of the world, so you can "send yourself" to the hell he created for breaking the Laws he invented.
How do you know that they are praying in vain. The mind/brain is a very complicated organ with millions of connections that go untapped. Every scientist is perplexed by its intricacy. And we fool ourselves everyday with what we believe to be reality. I can see why you would irk at some folks praying like they are holier than thou but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Prayer or meditation is very beneficial to one's well being and is not a psychosis.
@ladyofire Sorry to inform you that you have no idea what you are talking about. Second stop using the term scientists so broadly and learn what field of science deals with the human brain. "millions of connections that go untapped" is not a sentence a psychologist would say. It even sounds stupid. My advice would be to learn the structures and functions of the brain and then you might not be so confused.
@ladyofire Last, you need to learn more about a lot of things; not limited to the human body and brain before asserting that pray and meditation is beneficial to one's well-being. Next, you next to identify the composition of prayers and meditation and explain why the components these anomalies create said effect. This will be your starting hypothesis. After that, you need to set up true experimental conditions and measure it for empirical validity; selecting a sample size of at least 2000 folks
@MrIllustratio OMG...you clearly don't know anything about the benefits of prayer or meditation. Lowered blood pressure, decreased risk for heart failure, anti-anxiety and anti-depression or stress reducing, and much more. Telling a person not to pray or that it's stupid is like telling them to give up on having a better quality of life. It's ultimately ridiculous and even maniacal. Stop the madness people!
@ladyofire don't forget a control group or it won't be a true experiment. If you get confused about how to begin this, I'm sure you can ask others here or perhaps I can explain further. You need to keep the conditions the same for all participants and do certain eliminations. You see, it's a lot of work, planning, measuring, and fact finding; not just simply saying prayers work or that some sky daddy is listening to you.
It is funny, today i posted a prayer today on my fb page, but i did not do it to show off, i did it to remind myself, what i need to do. I did it as a commitment to those i love that i do believe in Christ.
on your last point, God says when two or more come together in my name, i am there...So yes, if my friends read the same prayer, or know that i also believe in Christ may reach out if they need some help, like i may reach out to them!!
i was recently called bitter hearted, for making fun of prayer on Facebook. it was a rather funny insult because of who it came from. the most self righteous, egotistical bitch i know.
I am no religious zealot but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that atheists are fulls of shite. You guys throw out the baby with the bathwater and we cannot measure every phenomenon in the world. Ever been in love? Just because you can't measure being in love doesn't mean it does not exist. You'd be a fool to live your life that way. I believe in a 'global mind' or 'global consciousness' Look at the science on plants and you'll see just how everything is interconnected.
I wonder how many times churches have used Matthew 6:5-6 as their bible reading? What I'd give just to be a fly on the wall and see the reactions of the church-goers if they did.
There is at least one good aspect to prayer as the Western Christian uses it: it can be used as a tool to reflect and just be silent, like meditation. When people "listen" to what God is saying, they must infer it from their own feelings, which makes the voice of God their "inner" voice. If nothing else, when people pray in this way, it gives them a chance to look within themselves (even though they may think they're looking to God) and contemplate things.. It's like meditation for the Westerner
@Wittgensteinism The thing is, in stead of listening to a concious, they may be listening to rationalizations, which are worse. A concious should tell you to consider other humans in your actions while christian morality is mostly being concerned about ending up in heaven yourself, or trying to stay out of hell.
A concious calls you to do just to those around you.
Rationalizations calls what you've done just regardless of others.
@FHomeBrew A conscience* you mean? I don't think it would be accurate to suppose that people pray as a way of rationalizing things, i mean, if they were gonna do that, they probably wouldn't be praying in the first place. And besides, that's obviously not the type of prayer i'm talking about. I'm talking about the prayer where you're asking for advice or need guidance of some kind on a decision; trying to "listen" to God, not just looking to reaffirm something you've already passed judgement on.
@Wittgensteinism I knew I didn't spell conscience right :p Anyway, I think they won't knowingly pray to rationalize things, but they rationalize none the less. About your further statements: how would you tell the difference between "listening to god" and "rationalizing"? If god tells you "You did the right thing" or "It's not up to you any more" or "You've done all you could" How would you tell the difference between sound advice and a rationalization?
@FHomeBrew I see what you mean by "rationalizing", though i'd still say that's a different kind of use than the one i was describing. But even though i concede that ppl can (and probably do) use prayer in this rationalizing way, i think that only reemphasizes my point. It isn't about being able to "tell the difference", it's about the fact that people at least use it as a way to reflect on things. That's still better than not reflecting on it at all isn't it, even if they do rationalize it away?
@Wittgensteinism I don't think there's that many people who don't reflect on their own actions, especially in socially unjust situations. People who would pray to god would care more about their own salvation than righting the social wrong they've done/could fix. Well, in theory.
If people are to reflect at all, don't let it be prayer. It isn't moral.
@FHomeBrew The issue was about the fact that prayer itself was the way in which some people reflect. Of course nearly everyone reflects to some degree, but using prayer as a further way to contemplate deeply about things is hardly a bad thing..
And to the extent that people do that, i say it is a good thing, especially if they would not reflect on things in that way without prayer..
@Wittgensteinism Pragmatically I'd say yes, that is indeed a "better way" in that it should lead to a lesser amount of suffering. But doing the right thing for the wrong reasons is not something I consider moral :/ Helping people because you truly want to repent to those who you've harmed is totally different than helping them because you want to evade hell. Although this was a bit off comment, I see this as a consequence of reflection through prayer and without prayer.
ATTENTION ALL CHRISTIANS: The bottom line is God knew our "free will" choices before we were born. Free will? Hardly. God created people he knew were going to the hell he created for sins he knew we would commit as dictated by the Law he invented.
Sin=death and eternal torture. I repeat, God knew the "free will" choices I would make that will send me to the hell he created dictated by the Law he invented. Your God is a mass torturing psycho path. Why? Because most don't believe in him. LoL.
I would like to suggest that everyone worships me. I'm not omnipotent, I'm not omnipresent, I'm not omniscient. I do, however, have an advantage that most gods do not. I exist.
@Hyperplaterine OK, since you asked nicely, but only if you eat tulip bulbs on wednesday's and stand on your head chanting the birdie song at 11:27 for half an hour every sunday.
Interesting as usual, but bloody hell what's with the "I'm gonna look well cool if I spend 4 seconds pretending to look at something interesting on the left". Please please please quit this stuff !
@Atila6735 See, that's why I don't look at him or the background or the video at all, as this is not important in any way, shape or form to what he wants to convey. I just listen to the words and let them sink in and evaluate them by my standards and see if they match up or if I see something wrong in them.
Actually, its small pox that's been wiped out. Polio still persists mostly because of preaching against vaccination by local imams in central Africa and India, using, in part, propaganda produced by the American anti-vaxers.
Christian response: Ya'll be using them intellectual lookin' phrases of yours to brainwash people! Athiest: No, we're.. Christian: I'M RIGHT YOU'RE WRONG, LALALALALA
I am torn on this video. I enjoy the fact that you call our those that publicly post prayers for attention since, in my understanding of Christianity, it should be focused more as a private, humble relationship with Christ. I also loved the analogy of the garbage man at the end. Yet, I felt this video was more lose rambling than anything. Not bad, I guess I have grown to expect more from these videos. Still, don't mean to complain, just a big fan of helping keep my brother credible. Keep it up.
As usual, you raise some excellent points. Humans invented sanitation. Where was god when people were dying of diseases which were preventable by simply washing your hands? An 11th commandment could have saved so much misery; 'Thou shalt wash your hands once or twice a day'. Somehow the omnipotent creator of the universe thought it was more important not to make graven images.
I wish you'd pointed out that just after the Matthew passage you mentioned is the so-called "Lord's Prayer." It isn't some obscure passage. Every time the Lord's Prayer is recited in church, it's an affront to what Jesus requested just before. It is specifically NOT supposed to be a public prayer.
I get you. There are a lot of christian hypocrites out here. The truth of the matter is this, there are forces in the spiritual realm that attack christians minds. Therefore making a mockery of them. Unbelievers and regular people do not get attacked at the rate of christians because christians are actually trying to get to heaven and get the reward that all humans were made for. Unfortunately, everyone will not get that reward. Time is short and all must make their choice now.
Historically, we've already seen what happens when there are no or few atheists for the religious to pray at. When pretending to witness to the nonbeliever isn't a credible option. They start preying on each other. To the death.
This video started off great as it mirrors many of my thoughts about public prayer; but when it gets to the comparison between America and God, it goes down hill.
Christian Prayer Center ad is SO ironic! My Facebook updates are filled with one family member in particular who feels it necessary to post wacky Christian rhetoric everyday even though I'm one of the only 2 non-Christians friends with him on Facebook. I shared this video can't wait to see if my extended family throws a tantrum about it.
They don't realize that the reason people in other religions keep praying, is the same reason they do it... and it's not the results, since Christians "know" other gods aren't real....
When you're not able to recognize your own reflection in the mirror and use this handicap as a justification for hate and a screwed up sense of revenge, other apes are allowed to make fun of you... duh....

BER2ERKER 1 month ago
@MrIllustratio That's a bad point though. Meditation is an *actual* process

BER2ERKER 1 month ago
@ladyofire That's a typical way of incorrectly mixing religion with spirituality. They are very different things. The problem is that spiritual questions are almost always strewn with religious superstition. Prayer and meditation couldn't be further from one another in nature. That's confusion, of a religious kind, right there. Man oh man...
BER2ERKER 1 month ago
@BER2ERKER Prayer IS meditation whether you refuse to believe it or not. Prayer is a form of meditation...and there are all kinds of meditation practices out there...kinetic or dancing meditation (whirling dervish), yoga, chanting, tai chi...the list goes on. And there is nothing that says that meditation and spirituality or religion shall not mix. So you are incorrect. There are many names of God like there are many forms of meditation.

Prayer or meditation is very beneficial to one's well being and is not a psychosis.
ladyofire 1 month ago
@ladyofire Sorry to inform you that you have no idea what you are talking about. Second stop using the term scientists so broadly and learn what field of science deals with the human brain. "millions of connections that go untapped" is not a sentence a psychologist would say. It even sounds stupid. My advice would be to learn the structures and functions of the brain and then you might not be so confused.
MrIllustratio 1 month ago
@ladyofire Last, you need to learn more about a lot of things; not limited to the human body and brain before asserting that pray and meditation is beneficial to one's well-being. Next, you next to identify the composition of prayers and meditation and explain why the components these anomalies create said effect. This will be your starting hypothesis. After that, you need to set up true experimental conditions and measure it for empirical validity; selecting a sample size of at least 2000 folks
MrIllustratio 1 month ago
@MrIllustratio OMG...you clearly don't know anything about the benefits of prayer or meditation. Lowered blood pressure, decreased risk for heart failure, anti-anxiety and anti-depression or stress reducing, and much more. Telling a person not to pray or that it's stupid is like telling them to give up on having a better quality of life. It's ultimately ridiculous and even maniacal. Stop the madness people!
ladyofire 1 month ago
@ladyofire don't forget a control group or it won't be a true experiment. If you get confused about how to begin this, I'm sure you can ask others here or perhaps I can explain further. You need to keep the conditions the same for all participants and do certain eliminations. You see, it's a lot of work, planning, measuring, and fact finding; not just simply saying prayers work or that some sky daddy is listening to you.

... in other words, it's a mistake to think that prayer for anyone besides the person praying; it's a way to help oneself, not others.
Wittgensteinism 1 month ago
There is at least one good aspect to prayer as the Western Christian uses it: it can be used as a tool to reflect and just be silent, like meditation. When people "listen" to what God is saying, they must infer it from their own feelings, which makes the voice of God their "inner" voice. If nothing else, when people pray in this way, it gives them a chance to look within themselves (even though they may think they're looking to God) and contemplate things.. It's like meditation for the Westerner
Wittgensteinism 1 month ago
@Wittgensteinism The thing is, in stead of listening to a concious, they may be listening to rationalizations, which are worse. A concious should tell you to consider other humans in your actions while christian morality is mostly being concerned about ending up in heaven yourself, or trying to stay out of hell.
A concious calls you to do just to those around you.
Rationalizations calls what you've done just regardless of others.
FHomeBrew 1 month ago
@FHomeBrew A conscience* you mean? I don't think it would be accurate to suppose that people pray as a way of rationalizing things, i mean, if they were gonna do that, they probably wouldn't be praying in the first place. And besides, that's obviously not the type of prayer i'm talking about. I'm talking about the prayer where you're asking for advice or need guidance of some kind on a decision; trying to "listen" to God, not just looking to reaffirm something you've already passed judgement on.
Wittgensteinism 1 month ago
@Wittgensteinism I knew I didn't spell conscience right :p Anyway, I think they won't knowingly pray to rationalize things, but they rationalize none the less. About your further statements: how would you tell the difference between "listening to god" and "rationalizing"? If god tells you "You did the right thing" or "It's not up to you any more" or "You've done all you could" How would you tell the difference between sound advice and a rationalization?
FHomeBrew 1 month ago
@FHomeBrew I see what you mean by "rationalizing", though i'd still say that's a different kind of use than the one i was describing. But even though i concede that ppl can (and probably do) use prayer in this rationalizing way, i think that only reemphasizes my point. It isn't about being able to "tell the difference", it's about the fact that people at least use it as a way to reflect on things. That's still better than not reflecting on it at all isn't it, even if they do rationalize it away?
Wittgensteinism 1 month ago
@Wittgensteinism I don't think there's that many people who don't reflect on their own actions, especially in socially unjust situations. People who would pray to god would care more about their own salvation than righting the social wrong they've done/could fix. Well, in theory.
If people are to reflect at all, don't let it be prayer. It isn't moral.
FHomeBrew 1 month ago
@FHomeBrew The issue was about the fact that prayer itself was the way in which some people reflect. Of course nearly everyone reflects to some degree, but using prayer as a further way to contemplate deeply about things is hardly a bad thing..
And to the extent that people do that, i say it is a good thing, especially if they would not reflect on things in that way without prayer..
Wittgensteinism 1 month ago
@Wittgensteinism Pragmatically I'd say yes, that is indeed a "better way" in that it should lead to a lesser amount of suffering. But doing the right thing for the wrong reasons is not something I consider moral :/ Helping people because you truly want to repent to those who you've harmed is totally different than helping them because you want to evade hell. Although this was a bit off comment, I see this as a consequence of reflection through prayer and without prayer.
FHomeBrew 1 month ago
ATTENTION ALL CHRISTIANS: The bottom line is God knew our "free will" choices before we were born. Free will? Hardly. God created people he knew were going to the hell he created for sins he knew we would commit as dictated by the Law he invented.
Sin=death and eternal torture. I repeat, God knew the "free will" choices I would make that will send me to the hell he created dictated by the Law he invented. Your God is a mass torturing psycho path. Why? Because most don't believe in him. LoL.

Unbelievers and regular people do not get attacked at the rate of christians because christians are actually trying to get to heaven and get the reward that all humans were made for. Unfortunately, everyone will not get that reward. Time is short and all must make their choice now.
