I think the word that you are looking for is " The Underdog " or " the Little engin that could" :) better yet if a Ford Fiesta beat a Dodge Viper in a sprint race that would be best to describe you.... just imagin the crowd would react to that... just in case..Hope I didn't effended you. I'm practicing and enjoying thanks. :)
A bit of reverse psychology/reverse role-ish helped me out with my confidence years ago. As an audience member, I've always had respect for DJ's and emcees who were able to hold their own on the mic. I'm sure many other spectators would think the same thing. So what I would do is picture myself in the Emcee's shoes and imagine the audience thinking highly of the job I would do. That gave a great boost in confidence. Another thing that helped out too is singing karaoke to get over stage fright.
@DjR3aper It was nicer than what I had used at Multi Opps! You tend to learn what you like and don't like when you get the opprotunity to use other's rigs. 8 Space Rack: 2 Sony CD Players 1 Stanton Vestax Mixer 4 space rack: Crown PB1 Amp ADJ Light Switcher 2 Sonic 3 Way Speakers (Sat on the floor) 2 Tri Pods & T sections Mirror Ball with 2 Pin Spots ADJ Sunlight 2 Par 56 Cans 1 Sonic CD Case (@100 CDs) Total Cost (minus CDs) = @$1700.00
dude you're exactly right this happened to me when i just little under two years ago, i walked into the venue and even the management crew didn't believe i was the dj but oh boy it took me twice as long as it usually takes to tear down cause of the amount of people that would go and congratulate me for the great job i had done

Brian you really hit the point home. I'm a 19 year old wedding DJ and i always win the clients I talk to just because I KNOW how I'm better than the competition and I'm confident. April will make my 2nd year on my own and I am thankful for talking with my uncle (previous dj) before attempting anything on my own. Also, I give much credit to Youtube and the awesome DJ's who are part of this community!! I have learned so much just from watching you all.
I totally agree with learning from established wedding DJs. I've got a mentor who's been in the wedding business for over 20 years, who helped build the wedding DJ industry in Orange County. I wish I had gotten to know him years ago, but I'm glad to work for him about once a month now to see how he runs everything on the day of the event. Within a few months, I've learned TONS of value adding strategies, which raises my bottom line. If you're a beginner, join a multi op as an assistant.
@djdaisentertainment Also to dog tail on that, I think DJing had always been an renaissance-like artisan, where the craft is mastered by a generation, and developed further by later generations. The apprentice would benefit from spending a few years learning from the masters, instead of trying to learn it themselves. It's much faster to learn from someone who's figured it all out, than to read about it online and do it from scratch. Of course this means you'll have to set your pride aside...
nice vlog brian, it really explains how a DJ can be better at a young age, and how a metor can say your ready to be on your own. what you explained about going on your own is like me right now, i'm 18 and i actually got handed down the mic this fall. and my fear of talking on the mic never happens. i have been in the mobile business for 3yrs now, and i love it.. an i love the MCing now!! i might do a response video later after Turkey day!! later
This did help me, I am a 16 year old DJ, I do feel like when I do help out older DJs, they get treated very different than I do. Don't get me wrong, I love DJing on my own, especially at 16, but when I go out with someone, it just adds that, help, and I do not think I will be going out on my own to a big gig like a wedding for a while. Anyway, Brian, do you know of any DJ businesses that are in Arizona? If so do you know how I can contact them?
Almost 40??Dude you need to get rid of those eye sacs cause they can give your age away..That visually doesn't happen til 45. lol..I wish I was almost 40 again.lol
@briansredd I hear ya..I was told that drinking lots of water helps and skin complexion too. Seems to work for me but gray hair runs in my family...One of these years I'm going to let the beard grow white and be the next DJ Santa at a Christmas Party (its tempting)lmao...I'd make a gig log of it too no doubt.lol.Cheers!
you taken me back to when i first started at 13 and a half playing bars went to weddings at 15 whne i used ot get asked awww are you helping your dad and my answer used to be yes :D and smile and about half way through the night people realised my dad had gone who was helping me set up and i was doing the gig darn did they get a suprise one of the things i used to do to alter the perception was use a voice synth to deepen my voice till i was about 18-19 landed my first full hotel contract at 16
You are so funny! You should make big bucks just for your personality!

Great video Brian. I love the way you share this stuff in such a well thought out, reasoned way.
How about letting us see some pictures of you with your early rigs?
Cheers, Paul.
