  • I just love how even though Debarre breaks a string, he still plays on like nothing ever happened. That's so awesome.

  • How is that possible?

  • "clearly stochelo has had better solos than here"

I don't get what you are talking about. He had the best solo here it was tasty, it swung and was not just a rash of fast notes/flashy technique, yet he showed that off here too.

  • Amazing!!

  • 20 people broke strings and couldn't carry on playing.

  • wow

  • The guy fucking breaks a string and barely misses a beat. I actually had my mouth wide open at that. Holy shit.

  • ANGELO IS GOD..

  • this is quite a real gypsy throwdown sesh goin on

  • BRAVO.!!!...BRAVO !!!....What an Amazing Moment in Music...These guys must have finished `Book 2`...or they really have `Instinctive Knowledge`.

  • 19 people don't like this = 19 people are tone deaf

  • I've heard years ago a well composed ballad can stand up at any speed. Everyone to his own tastes.

  • They're revving it up too much. Written as a ballad which would've sounded 10 times better. I don't equate speed with good.

  • @kingusmcgee well, a lot of arrangements I've seen of this have it at an up tempo. most copies of the music label it as such too. if anything I hear it faster much more often than slow.

  • @kingusmcgee

I like it at this tempo, it gives it more life and excitement. And Im sure that the performers dont "equate speed with good" either

  • I was there sitting on the famous stone seat!!! greta moment. angelo was very stressed...But he still for me the guitarist with the most dangerous way to play in trying différent ways.

  • One of the best ever!!

  • ale chibi tam jimi rosenberg

  • Bireli is good but most of his playing is like (good) abstract painter who'd throw shit on canvas hoping for pattern to emerge.

  • dam he pops a string and still plays like a beast. pure genius

  • Amazing..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome.

  • 332637 views...332637 are mine

  • 19 people tried to break strings like that

  • Fantastic!

  • Angelo is so gipsy..love him!

  • Bireli lagrene is awesome.

  • Well, that's what separates me from Angelo, he breaks a string and barely misses an entire measure. I'd break a string, get lost trying to transpose everything, start crying and then get asked to get the fuck off the stage.

  • HOLY SHIT lol... never realized that he pops a string in the middle of the song

  • stochelo has a bad habit of doing arpeggio runs and forgetting about the main melody in his melody.

  • @xemosintightsx I am curious about hearing you playing music.

  • @NAThan9871 ...and?

  • @xemosintightsx and you play not bad, but nothing compared to Stochelo's playing which is much richer and technicaly better than yours so be gentle when you do some critics on Stochelo's playing and melodic sense... For example I think you should not say that Stochelo has a bad habit because it gives the impression that you're a master and I'm sorry but you're not. Stochelo is.

Have a nice day and keep practicing.

  • @NAThan9871 we don't all have to be masters to criticize...clearly stochelo has had better solos than here . clearly he's years beyond me...i still have a decent amount of musical experience to tell you that this just wasnt his best especially compared to the angelo/bireli...im pretty sure i dont have to be any sort of "master" to make that comparison. every gypsy guitarist around will say the same thing i did about this particular performance of his.

    you are also not bad.

  • I wonder who the 19 idiots who disliked this are...

  • ANGELO DEL BAR!

  • Incredible!

  • In soviet Russia guitar plays you.

    good SHtuff.

  • greatest.....

    respect

  • He merits Lagrene on rhythm

  • troppo bello

  • Angelo could have finished his solo in a proper way even if 5 strings would have broken simultaneously because he is a true musician, all three are.

  • Trio of Dreams. Stochelo-Bireli-Angelo. Moré Bomba bashaven!!!

  • Why did that string broke, it's the very best version I ever heard of it!

  • theeesee pros ...

  • 4:23 :|

  • Love this version of this song... I never really liked this song until I heard Angelo Debarre play it... Sheer genius

  • Is this a bootleg or has it also been recorded in an album?

  • @altrogeruvah This is from a 2002 or 3 three hour DVD festival recording.

  • @ricaard Do you have more details of DVD release & is it still available?

I want a copy!!! Many thanks!

  • @P0STALBL0WFISH I found my copy on EBay! I believe there is also an audio CD of the same out for purchase! I played mine every day for a year! It's worn out, so it's time to get another! I've been a Django fan for decades, and I believe this period of Bireli's and Angelo's (and the others) careers is Manouche music taken to its ultimate evolutionary ends...

  • @ricaard Thanks Ricaard. I agree this is the ultimate in Manouche playing!

Can you give me more details of the full title of the DVD & CD and the record label & catalog numbers? This would really help me in tracking down a copy.

If you are also looking for a new copy for yourself, and find a supplier, please let me know via a private message or posting on this thread. I'll do likewise (I'm based in the UK).

    Best wishes

  • @P0STALBL0WFISH Bireli Lagrene & Friends LIVE at Jazz A Vienne, I'm guessing the Catalog number is FDM 36662-9.

Good Luck to both of us!

  • @ricaard :

Amazon.co.uk still have copies at the moment (though not for long I suspect!):

    Studio:Total Home Entertainment / DVD Release Date: 28 Jun 2004 /ASIN: B0001HKV8S

Many of the songs and artists featured on the DVD aren't mentioned in the track listings, or even on the menu of the DVD itself, but this is certainly the right DVD - this clip comes from chapter 23.

Now, anyone brave enough to try transcribing the solos?!

    Bonne chance, mes amis!

  • This video is hypnotic! I keep going back and watching it again and again.

  • Bravo Angelo!!

  • WOW! The Living Django!

  • That flat out smoked. I have Bireli's early acoustic albums and this was a nice reminder of his chops on the non-electric six string.

  • damn he broke a string. that always sucks

  • @JazzJunkie4 I know! When I bought and watched this DVD the first time, I was blown away by his explosive style, & when his string broke, it was like getting off a roller coaster halfway down the first hill!

  • any recomendations of others to listen to?

  • gonzalo bergara, robin nolan,.rosenberg trio, jimmy rosenberg, fapy lafertin, tchavolo schmidt, dorado schmidt.... so many

  • wooo!!! grab shell dudes... this is just fuckin' awesome. Thanks Afrohally for the upload here.

  • just breathtaking... so much beauty.. thank you

  • exemple éclatant entre génie et virtuose....

  • @Vitaminnn07 Actually, wrong. It's the same song. Just another interpretation. Because it's jazz, you know. Don't you hear those notes?

  • best gispy trio i've ever seen on you tube

  • @risingsun1987 check out tommy emmanuel and frank vignola and their bass players new album just between frets its greatest gypsy since django

  • I'm pretty sure this is the best Manouche guitar trio in the world.

  • I have to agee

  • WOOWW 3:59

  • Woooo!! even when the string brake down haha sounds good :D 3:59

  • Magique ! <3

  • Angelo is a monster

  • Lovely surprise! Came across this while searching for something else. Three world class guitarists, all in top form, playing music I love. Thanks so much for sharing it.

  • Loved all three, thanks for posting.

  • Seen stochelo live in july, he's really good, fluid and a great entertainer. Bireli also plays jazz and is more complete, but Stochelo's just as good as him.

  • That is amazing-his fingers are so fast. :)

  • AWESOME>>>>>>>>>>>>!!!!

  • o_O

  • Angelo Debarre is amazing, notice his string break at about the 4:00 minutes mark, he just keeps playing like nothing is wrong, but you see it on his face as it happens... A true performer in every sense.

  • yeah

  • I hear the spirit and the licks of Django in all 3.Marvelous playing!

  • I think angelo sounds the best, but Bireli is the man, rosenberg sounds ok.

  • wasn't a challenge... was a conversation...

    a bientot

  • if it was a conversation, angelo spoke better, easy to understand, and feel

  • judge as police... are everywhere...

    glad that i'm not both.

  • I first watched this video about the time it was introduced to YouTube. I was amazed at the talent and musicality displayed by all the musicians, and how much of an emotional impact it had on me, even on my crummy little computer speakers. I watch it from time to time, and it gets better with each listen!

  • Debarre's facial expression when the string breaks...haha

  • Gypsy Gitarre vom Feinsten

  • he breaks his e-string at 4:00, if listen to it musically it sounds pretty cool - maybe just one of their sick licks:)

  • I pretty much shat myself.

  • I love the end by Stochelo ! Wonderfull !

  • Signori........., questi sono gradi musicisti, mamma mia... sono inarrivabili!!!

  • He handled that pooped string like it was nothing!

  • QUOTE=He handled that pooped string like it was nothing!/QUOTE

Someone pooped on his string? Yikes!

  • I'd love to sound like these guys, take a listen to me and GIVE ME SOME HINTS!

  • Play 23 and a half hours a day and jam with everyone you can haha.

  • thanks! ha

  • Ummm.... Practice?

  • 5:12!

  • lol

  • Anyone know what kind of pickup/mic they are using in the soundhole of the guitar?

  • Looks like a transducer (picks up vibrations like a pickup) for volume and the percussive elements, and tight unidirectional AKG 1000 style mics in front for tone

  • 2:11- 2:15 !!!! Géniale la phrase ==> vais la repiquer !

  • 3:16 !!!

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Yes, Bireli is "better" and really has no peer in this genre but Angelo is one of kind, too. Just brilliant on the part of all three.

  • the rythm guy is a better player believe it or not

  • ..or not..!!

  • J'adore le feeling de Stochelo!!

  • kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-))

  • i bet as soon as that string snapped he thought

"Well, I am never using these strings again"

  • A gypsy jazz summit conference. I have the video, Birelui LaGrene and friends, from which this is taken. I've seen it about a hundred times and they still inspire awe. Someday I'll play like that, but it will be about two lifetimes from now, if then.

  • This Rocks!!!

  • du grand art !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • der spielt so das die seiten reißen hahahaha very good. angelo debarre and stochelo are the bests. but martin taylor is the god of the guitar.

  • That's not bad Angelo :-)

  • Wow! Debarre's solo is awesome. Love the great mix of Django and bop lines.

  • Debarre's lick at 0:42=AWESOME; good example of the bop presence in gypsy jazz

  • I like the melody he starts at 1:00

  • If you want chord changes then the must have is:

The Jazz Chords Changes Anthology: 487 pages

1558 Hand Written Great Tunes from the Jazz Repertoire.

The chord changes are actually often more correct than in the real book.

  • Sorry, I was trying to reply to a comment earlier on.

This is great by the way! :-)

  • This is absolutely amazing.

  • these men are the greatest at gypsy jazz... and guitar in general, i wonder why angelo always moves over his head in that funny position though haha

  • 3 of the best guitar players in the entire world and of all time together. Angelos solos were picture perfect and educated, Birelis were WHAT THE HELL IS HE PLAYING...but oh my god its wonderful, Rosenbergs were so smooth and flowing...all three make me want to toss my Gitane into a wall

  • Wow he broke a string and still went on!

  • Nice.. I play my self Gypsy jazz to....

I have a video that I play myself a gypsy jazz number....

    but BRAVO sounds FANTASTIC!!!

  • awesome!!!!!!!

  • bireli debarre is like there will never be another you and them their eyes ............. michto!!!!

  • So Fantastic Amazing guitar¡¡¡¡¡¡

like me too Oscar Petersen in Piano Jazz.

  • mind bending awsome

  • AMAZING!!How could it be anything less than *5*

  • Bireli's solo was my favoirte.

They all have such incredible control...the sweeps and licks are so clean. Not a note is muddled.

Nice cover on the melody when his string broke too....

  • I am convinced that the gypsy guitarists have the most command over the fretboard, over scales and arpeggios of all guitarists.

    Wonderful playing.

  • I would disagree, i think any great jazz players has the same knowledge, they just may not dig into the arpeggios as hard as these guys do.

  • anyone know their chord progression?

  • It´s on the real book!

    cheers

  • whats the real book?

  • The real book is somthing any jazz player needs!

It's full of jazz standards, themes and chord progressions included.

There are a few different editions, and different tones for the horns for example.

  • hey cheers found it

  • 3 KING ;-)

  • I love Angelo's Solo style, really jazzy more than gypsy in my opinion..love it.

  • This music is called Manouche, and Gypsy Jazz. It was invented by real gypsies (principally Django Reinhardt) after hearing Jazz. You can find Gypsy extensions of all kinds of music, they injected fire into local traditions as they travelled ( having been introduced to HORSES in northern India.

  • if u listen to traditional hungarian music and eastern european music u can hear alot of where this kind of stuff had ancestory, it's really interesting how all of this evolved simply by people being shown one style and they invent their own

  • gipsy*

  • amazing. I love gypsi guitar

  • FUCKING IMPORTS =)

  • amazing chops omg and even with a broken string!! crazy!!

  • FUCKING HOT!!!!!

  • this is fabulous. it must have taken a lot of practice to be able to play with that tempo so well. great stuff. thanks for posting this video!

  • hahahah he broke a string... wow

  • I hate to say this, but Biréli Lagrène is the best guitarplayer in the world.

  • How would you know? Have you heard them all? You idiot.

  • There Will Never Be Another Birelli Lagrene.Prove me wrong:)

  • does anyone know what pickups they're using?

  • i believe they're just using mics, which makes the recording sound very good and natural. I HATE AMPLIFIED ACOUSTIC GUITARS. no matter how good the pickup/guitar combo is it always sounds like the sound is coming out of a cheap keyboard or something. i know some people like it but dear god, it is no comparison to hearing just the actual guitar itself.

  • But do you know the name of that pickup inside the soundhole. Thats true there aren't lots of pickups which take the acoustic sound of guitar but this pickup does it

  • i'm pretty sure there are no pickups, just mics. if you look at the guitars when it's zoomed in they all have a mic taped onto the guitar.

  • What's the name of that mic??. I've been looking for those kind of mics but cant find them anywhere

  • I don't think anyone likes guitar pickups (also used on pianos) They are necessary you could not mic these guitars enough to get any presence without feedback. So the volume comes froma a pickup the tone is from the condenser mic.

In a studio with just a condenser mic or pair you would instantly hear the wood and the squek of strings and remember how great a properly recorded guitar sounds like, 10 fold better then this - this is all we can do live

  • Its always good to have a direct signal, but yea miking a guitar directly where the sound resonates will give you the most "natural" tone. For youtube it sounds great.

    Cheers
