@irish4life20 But this will beat a jeep when it comes to off roading, this isn't ugly at all, it's got a rugged beauty to it and besides, they designed it totally for off road use, styling and road comfort wasn't in the design spec.
Is it just me or does the double cab pick up have a much longer pick up area? I have 2007 one and it is no way as long as that. I am feeling very jealous!!!
actually, the most used vehicle used by militaries around the world is the toyota land cruiser. defenders lost out to land cruisers because the defender is too expensive for alot of the developing nations.
Actually, Land Cruiser70 series are more expensive than Defenders on most parts of the world, Land Rover was toppled by the 70 series because it is a much more reliable and stout vehicle..
The video is excellent. But it is only markting. This is because should bring semi axes of reinforced and self manufacture. Material is very weak. Lover of the brand but I am very disappointed. Finally!
when ever there is a world tour its always Landrover or Toyota that too it used to be FJ40 series in the past. I have driven both and both are the best in its class.
Sorry, you are wrong. Most militarys choose the mercedes G as new soldiercar. Even british troops startet to sell their old Defenders in favor of the G.

i think that for what it is the jeep wrangler might be better simply because it was designed to take on the rubicon trail and moab, and this was designed to take on some mud in york.
... ok... wow. most jeeps are shit, in fact everyone is except the grand cherokee and the wrangler. actually the grand cherokee is shit too, its just better than the other jeeps. but the wrangler's off road ability is better than any other 4x4. i think the defender is good too though, but if i had to choose which one to buy with my own money, i like the look, the interior, and the off-road ability of the wrangler much better.
yeah dude wranglers are bad ass, i have a '97 with a 5 inch lift and 31 inch mud rovers(there not that big but its not just a mud rig, i need the flex for the trails) and not only does it crawl over like everything but it gets through some nasty mud too
i still wouldn't buy one. the defender and the wrangler have horrible on-road driving habits. when i drive a car, i want to have fun. the wrangler can only be fun off-road. i'll stick to handling over that shit.
actually the wrangler is pretty good on road, well if you live in the country side like i do, but its not too bad on the high way either cause i drive mine from mass to maine all the time and its not that bad, i just like knowing when ever i feel like it i can hit up a new trail i see on the side of the road
I wish they brought the Defender back to the states, this particular version of truck is my favorite; a 4 door pick up with canvas top. I have a question for any Land Rover owner, what makes them go so well off road ? Standard tires, factory height and they go where other won't.
hi webscots, I own a 110 with a td5 engine for almost nine years now.
as for your question:
1. wheel articulation is immense, combined with a stiff frame
2. low gears and central diff lock.
3. tires..well its a touchy subject, I'm happy with cooper discoverer a/t, good on snow/ gravel and forest-tracks
4. The driver! As we don't have endless amounts of horsepower, the landy-drivers have to use it a wee bit more clever than the "step on the pedal till it smokes" brigade..:-)
Thank you so much for the response, I always wondered. I am a huge fan of the (as you say; Landy ) and really anything stout. I am a function not a fashion guy. I have some friends who jack there trucks up and put on mudders, I am much more subdued, and appreciate what the engineers at the factory do. I can pretty much tell by your cheerful answer that your a "Landy guy" til the end, and I say good for you. Best regards from the States.
it was nothing to do with ford, the british army stopped using them in 2006,therfor it was only then that land rover could change any part of them.the british army was the biggest buyer of them and did not allow land rover change them.
When looking at this video, I noticed the tires seem pretty basic, is there something that makes them go so well ? Over here in the states they give us crap tires, very quiet and give best mpg ratings, they're garbage in snow and ice and mud, and we change them out quickly, corporate cost cutting.
I think you;ll find they are still using them, in fact there is a massive refurbishment programmme in operation to bring all the old pre Wolf models up to the latest spec, hundreds of the armoured models were refitted after over 10 - 15 years service in Northern Ireland and are now in the middle east, that says something about their longevity
but not to the same extent that they were.i read that they were unable to offer enough protection for there troops when it comes to driving over landmines etc.
having seen those hummers in action they might be good at stopping frag ect, but they are very heavy and have to be pulled out of soft ground sometimes, funny enough by unarmoured landrovers passing by sometimes! Like the hummers but will miss the landie in service, hope the jackal lives up to british hopes!
Also the hummer is too heavy with all the armour on and often gets stuck in soft ground, leaving the British to pull it out in an unarmoured land rover, think if you scout around Youtube you will see a British chap using a short wheel base landy with no doors on easier to deploy from pulling a hummer out of the mud!
yes the Jackal will be replacing most frontline uses of the WMIK and other defenders. Still see if you can find some footage to watch of the jackal in action, takes air suspension to the new level and while i think it will do well noticed one broke down and had to be towed first time out with the pathfinders in afghanistan!
haha really? i used to live beside a traffic branch HQ in NI, seen the RUC and psni defenders headin out all the time...and comin back in covered in paint or scorch marks! ps wish my house had as many defenders sittin outside it as the one in the video!

Wranglers are trail rated? Land Rovers are world rated. When they do a around the world drive they dont use Jeeps they use Land Rovers.
Hummers are to heavy and to big for the military, they are slow and big easy targets.
The Defender is small and quick, you dont need armor if they cant hit you.
The Defender is the most sought after 4x4 in the world, I just wish they sold it here in the US.
