  • Wow I love this piece, and you did such a great job interpreting it! How long have you been playing?

  • @pianowhiz1 Thanks, I have been playing for about 12 years now

  • You're really good I'm so jealous I wich I knew how to play piano as well but for now I still have Chopin, Mozart Bach and Beethoven :D

  • I like that out of tune sound to this piano. It's badly out of tune, but it really has a feel to the sort of stuff I'm in to, such as blues piano. The out of phase beat sequencing sort of has that ghostly haunt, reminescent of those rag time, blues records of the early 1900s. Keep it up.

  • very nice interpretation

it lacks of some crecendos, minuendos, pedaling signatures etc...

but preety good for your age so far

    only one recommendation.

tune that piano please!!. it's killing my ears.

  • @TheChileanpsycho Thanks for the feedback. Looking back now, the piano was pretty badly out of tune! Since then I have gotten a really nice Yamaha upright grand to replace this 1913 beast :)

  • @whawk94

Do another video now and lets see your improvements

It's better to ask people that you don't know, they'll be extremely critic and they'll help you notice your mistakes

    ;)

  • So amazing and beautiful

  • Yep, Wesley. This is definitely the best of all the versions. The slow deliberate timing is what makes music especially so powerful. Especially with dear Chopin.

  • Pay attention to the phrasing in the sheet music, cause for the most part, your right hand is the same level volume throughout most of the piece, it just needs a bit of variety and the left hand is a tad bit loud.

  • Out of all the versions of this song I am in love with the way Wesley Hawkins plays it. I have probably watched this particular video 1,000 times, just looping on repeat for hours. Currently I am listening to my playlist which only contains this song over and over.

  • @Carolinie433 Wow! I can't believe you've listened to it that much! Thanks so much for the huge compliment and I'm so glad you've enjoyed my playing that much!

  • Well done...very talented. stay focused and get the piano tuned... otherwise it was perfect.

  • Excellent playing! And yes, you need a new piano ;-)

  • Excellent playing! I checked out this video because I'm currently playing this piece and I felt like the piece didn't have enough flow when I was playing it. You have passion, flow, dynamics, and perfect fermata lengths in the E flat major section. Keep it up :)

  • Why are you barefoot? Also, work on your left hand. At times it's too loud. And please, your hand is not a limp fish, don't be so sloppy!

  • you're trying too hard.. stop flopping your hand!

  • Beautifully done =) Thanks for sharing. Can only dream to play so wonderfully someday.

  • you have the touch¡¡¡

i wish the best in your life...you are blessed in your hands...carpe diem¡¡¡¡

  • you need a better piano. you got talent. just need an in tune piano

  • flawless for me.. great interpetation.. i'm waiting to see you being aired on cable channel someday, man.. you got sheer talent..

  • Thanks a lot! I have a long ways to go yet in my studies, but I appreciate the compliments!

  • way to slow man and stop with the stuipid hand movements its all so forced

  • Believe me, nothing was forced...if it looked forced, it was completely by accident :)

  • ur from bc? me too!! on the island tho:P nice playing. but like others have mentiond. could definately be faster at certain parts. seems to slug along at 3:15 keep playin! :)

  • you look bored.

  • it's nice but i thinks it needs a little bit of power to the piece so that the sound can reach the heart....but i do agree it's absolutely amazing

  • not to mention the speed's a bit on the slow side.

  • nice!

Too slow, good feeling, too loud, needs a few minor fixes.

im 13 and im going to play this nocturne for my national contest next sunday

  • you play with style but some parts should be a little bit faster.. that was good!

  • Wesley man where are you from? sorry lol i know it sounds like a stalker question. my bad. lol

  • I'm from Chilliwack, British Columbia.

  • BC! sweet! i went there once for vacation saw the Butchart gardens and loved it bro. By the way, i too am learning this piece. You played it great man. Keep it up!

  • You played this brilliantly, very reflective. :)

  • Beautifully done

  • This is great!

  • wow..how old are u?

  • you are very good, you are so full of emotion when you played that song, and easy going :)

  • i can really tell that you love this piece.

    it definately shows.

    bravo,

  • I was looking for the best version of this piece on youtube; and you by far beat Pollini!

    Absolutely fabulous!

  • no cheak out roisepianomum hers is a much beeter version

  • wonderful play, very impressed!!!

  • great job!

    Chopin is my hero

  • pas mal, un peu lourd sur le début....

  • Ahh, Romanticism.

  • I'd say any overzealousness would have to be caused by the context the photography puts him under. It's embarrassing to play such an emotional piece in front of anyone, unless the mood is just right. It's always difficult to reveal yourself, especially when it's Chopin. That's what I love so much about him. Everyone plays it differently. I do agree the last note, and a few "trill to come downs" aren't as deliberate as usual...

but these faults are only "faults" of innocence and humility.

  • wow, that was really deep :)

  • I'd like to believe it's the piano. That thing is hard to play in that space, plus the lower register is just a tiny bit out of tune... meanwhile... someone's standing there for 8 minutes recording it, making it EVEN MORE difficult to keep your... umm....

    compass. :)

I think everyone just wants you to play it faster because it's on an upright. Upright-bias effect. ;)

Play it like it's a Grand, My Boy, play it like it's a Grand.

    Absolutely beautiful.

Imagine overhearing it when he's alone.

  • A little less of pedal and rubato...

anyway the best performance i've heard in youtube of this piece ...

    gj bro

  • I think he did a great job at interpreting this piece, and I agree with the pedal, but not with the rubato criticism. It's almost right on.

  • to be fair i loved the technique you used in the middle section and the voicing was absolutely brilliant, but for god sakes man please dont end the song on that saggy wrist, end the song, the last note on an up. it gives the note more strength/drama

  • Ok, here's my feedback

    a bit less pedal

speed it up to about 70 or 72

dont hesitate to use plenty of rubato

at places like 1.20 be careful of that swiping motion your

doing to hit the left hand chords. typically a swiping motion is a big no no, and this is no exception

when you do your ups remember not to lift your hand too much, keep at least the tips of your fingers on the keys

dont let your palm or wrist drop below the fallboard

i like the middle section about 85 bpm with rubato

  • Wow! I think you are excellent I can only play the beginning of this piece and it`s one of my favorites...

-can you play Moonlight of Beethoven please?

I agree with you Chopin is one of the best although he is death

  • Better than anything I could of ever done xD

    Good job.

  • This video always takes the words right out of my mouth. I've wanted to play this song on the guitar but it will probably never sound as good as it does on the piano.

  • couldn't be any better, great

  • you played too slow, dont kid yourself.....but not bad for your age. You have a chance at being a great player but step it up!

  • How do you like to play it?

  • Why should it have to be faster?

  • You sound like a douche bag who is trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about. ;) Well done, Wes. You can NEVER be too passionate. What is music if not passion?

  • I agree with the second part! :)

  • Impressive. You are probably playing since your 3rd year of life? :P

  • Thank you. 6th year actually : )

  • i love, love, love you!~

this is so beautiful..you certainly put your heart into this..

your playing is great, kudos to you :)

can somebody give me the music sheet for this piece?

  • just...perfect...i'm crying..jajaja...really..you are a great player.i like how you play it, slow..sound so good..

  • Wesley, your performance of THIS song is GREAT!!! i LOVE the nice speed you played it in and the emotion u had. its PERFECT!!!

I have a version on CD/mp3 that lasts 8 mins for the SAME song so DONT speed it up. i LOVE it slow. steve from NYC

  • Thank you for the comment, When I first watched this video back I was also a bit taken aback at how slow I played it. But then I remembered the passion in which I was encompassed at the time, and my love for the music. As a result, this is what it ended up sounding like. Also about the pedal, the one on my piano is quite hard to use compared with others that I've played on and I continue to work on creating a good tone. Thanks again!

  • a little overzealous on the passion there bud

  • Are you a musician?

  • Blimey, did you just use the word encompassed? How old are you? I'm impressed!

  • Very, nice and mature interpretation but, sometimes it seems a tad slow I'd say and perhaps muddy which could either be excessive use of the sustain peddle or perhaps a flaw in the instrument.
