  • i play keyboard... fucking difficult, but really fun! lots of block chords. pretty well done.

  • not the best performance but i must say that was quite epic. the composer is my music industry teacher now, it's cool to be able to hear his compositions like this.

  • butchered the trumpet solo. Just finished performing this at my high school.

  • we are preforming this song tonight at my high school's band concert. And this really is a hard peice. I an 1st flute and pic. It is hard but I think our version turned out really well :)

I can't wait to preform it tonight!

  • I did play this in highschool.

  • wow. this is REALLY Good. i have to play this song for my highschool band. i play on clarinet 1st part. this song is preety hard. especially those 16th note melodies. check Out My vids.

  • chill out, not every band has an oboe. when our band was far more spectacular than we were now -- like 3 years ago -- they apparently pulled off with an alto sax just fine.

  • wait... isnt the first solo supposed to be for the oboe?

  • i played this when i was in the 10th grade (2002) and we played this at festival and walked away with 5 stars...where do i begin as stated before the beginning solo is played by an obeo not clarinet, not hating on clarinets because that was my instrument of chose, horns were too loud and it seemed like a lot of blaring to me. not a good rendition. needs a lot of work.

  • @sherrieduran i agree it needs some work but the solo was played by an also sax not a clarinet at the beginning the way they did it. you seem to sound like you know alot about music but you cant even tell the instrument for the solo? im not great with music and i could still tell...just saying...

  • Good God! I could hear phasing throughout the entire song! And if they tuned, I don't think they did a very good job. And usually, the beginning of the song (that was played by the clarinet before the timpani roll at measure 8) is played by an oboe.

  • i agree with halomonkeys intros-bad

    inferno is hard song

clarinets couldve played better song needs work

  • brought shame to the horn solo =/

  • inferno doesn't need an intro for christ's sake. The clarenet solo might as well put up a giant neon sign saying welcome to HELL!

  • The trumpet could use a mute to add more effect it makes it sound way better. This is of my fav. song. you all need more practice but it sounded way better than the ascension

  • I had that trumpet solo in high school and the part actually calls for a mute. I also played it slower and improved the melody a bit to make it more dramatic.

  • kinda sounds like a song i played when i was in the honor band. Now that was cool. Vesuvius is a hard piece too and super cool. Clarinets rule!

  • Yes clarinets do rule! i play the clarinet and ive been to honor band also. my name is courtney! reply!

  • we're doing this for my school and i play bari sax so my part is decent. no oboe?! awh mann not cool. its a tad our of tune in the beginning. like between the high woodwinds and the trumpets. we're doing this for orchestra.

  • I've been playing oboe since last january and now I have to play this at Carnegie Hall in April

    IT'S INTENSE!!

it's so hard especially those sixteenth note runs!! but I guess i'm doing okay my orchestra is pretty good

we're also playing purgatorio (so glad I'm not a clarinet anymore haha!)

  • aw. no oboe solo :(

  • FayCo Symphonic band is playing this for the winter concert...it's pretty wicked fast.

  • well.. it's not that bad... the trumpet solo is good.. but heard some mis-pitches... the trombone part at bar 154 (viscous) how come is it so soft? it must be solid... the entry of drum is good as I can feel some musical style... tuba's entry during trombone part (roughly bar 163), how come I didn't hear anything? Anyways your band is generally good... the french horn is strong...

  • hmmm this is my trumpet solo, and i did crack once but you know what people...you're so critical. Jesus, i mean we're just a high school band.

  • its grade 5

  • It's a grade 6 i do believe.

  • Isn't this a grade 3 piece? ...sounds pretty simple.

  • what? there are some pretty nasty flute/clarinet runs

  • Love this tune!!!!!! Played it with the Irish Youth Wind enseble - it sounds sooo much better with the oboe playing the solo, as written originally. The sax sounds a little weird... But we have a lot more oboes over the ocean here in Europe, I suppose. Than God you guys used the chain and not a shaker like a lot of people do!

  • mannnnn, why can't our band play this?

    killer clarinets XD

    i'd love it.

  • Spring Valley High School in Las Vegas played this song for marching band, it was awesome! And by the way the solo at the beggining does sound much better if the oboe plays it.

  • How weird? Spring Valley High School in Huntington, WV might be playing this for the Wind Ensemble!!

  • about four years ago, at band camp, The Music Learning Band wind ensemble played This with an oboe ath the beginning, it sounded really cool. this year the wind ensemble played Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!!

  • The bands at my highschool played this...

..and we also changed it to an oboe.

Though as a sax player myself, I liked it played with a sax :]

  • It was orignally composed to have an oboe in the introduction, Most high schools just use a sax in the place because there arn't many oboe players out there. Heard the wind ensemble at interlochen play this, amazing.

  • my wind ensamble is playing this

the opening sounds so much better with an oboe

and the french hornists in our band are much better.

  • we've only got 3 percussionists in our band, we might pull one up from our lower group cuz its kinda hard to cover all the parts as it is.

  • my highschool band is playing this on thursday night. i think ill post a vid of it so you all can feedback.

  • man you could pick that first chair first trumpet out no problem :-D

it is a VERY fun solo indeeed

  • It is fun, I was going to do the solo in my band but the rest of the ensemble couldnt keep up so we cut the tune. I really liked it.

  • i did too

  • james madison university's concert band (who also commissioned this piece when it first came out) is playing this now, and as large as our ensemble is, we do not have an oboe, either. so we had to make due with using our alto sax, just like you guys did. this was pretty good.

  • I just thought to mention it but something that can really add excitement, is actually our director after the beginning solo gave a tiny cue and the entrance came as quite a surprise, whereas here it was quite obvious haha.

  • om my god they ruined the song by not using an oboe for the beggining, drastic mistake

  • We didn't have an oboe player who could play the part because she was new to the instrument so the alto is cued and that's how we did it.

I know that we played this song a few years back adn had the oboe do it, and yes it is a big difference and sets the mood differently but you have to do what works with the group you have.

  • i guess thats a good replacement

  • yeah, sax wasnt nearly as good as oboe, but hey, the show must go on...

  • Isn't that trumpet solo supposed to be muted?.. Otherwise... not GREAT but pretty good...

  • it is supposed to be muted and a lot slower with more articulation

  • yeah thats how we are playing it

  • It was muted in this.

  • the bass drum is having way too much fun i.e. he is way too loud

  • LMAO!

Our teacher had our drum major do a like...5 minute speech at the beginning of Stille Nacht when we played it! It sucked. I feel bad for that guy.

But he read it today for us. I hope we don't have to when we actually perform it...But we're playing this song now, and it's so cool.

I got chills when we did the moaning part. Not this time though...lol sorry

    Good job though!

  • just get on with the song darnit....anyway great ,challenging grade 5 piece.timpani and oboe parts rock for this song..and woodwinds always go crazy...

  • Apparently, they didn't have an oboe player. I know that part is cued in the first alto sax.

  • the tam tams are way to loud in the middle part

  • were doing this piece rite now, its a quite dark piece, but i like it

  • i think that most parts are pretty good, if you have a hard wooden surface for a heavy chain. But you have to admit that most of the song sounds like a special alert on the news

  • Eh...The reading for the piece WAS a bit long. x.x But maybe my band director is just too ADD to write out long readings.

It's not a horrible performance, but notes could be a LOT clearer. I won't comment on tone or anything, because YouTube tends to distort sound a bit.

We had to play this piece last year(A bit frightening for a freshman flute player to be handed 6 pages of runs and upper register nonsense), and I know it's a bit hellish to get under your fingers.

  • the guy took long enough to talk...

  • we're playing that to! but we're in middle school... but we're the best band in maryland! and we always win first place in the hershey park adjudacations alongside other bands!

  • GOOD JOB!!!!

    its sounds awesome!!

my band is playing that too!

  • Good work. But it's a little sloppy. I played this a few years back in a local symphonic band. I'll post the recording if anyone wants to check it out. Don't mean to brag, but it sounds a lot better than this.

  • The oboe did excellent in this piece. The Ole Brook band just played this piece last night, and they did great. It sounded so real! Almost as if we were going through hades!

  • this sounds... pretty good, actually. it's a hard piece. my band played this last year at festival. i love this piece, though the french horn part was a nightmare for us rookies, at certain places.

  • Would all of you armchair concertmasters shut up and enjoy the music?

  • Our school band is playing this right now, its much cleaner than this. Percussion is really sloppy in this i think.

  • oh my god talk for an hour dude...

  • This piece is awesome. I know this whole piece by memory because its part of our marching show.

  • Holy. I really hope it's a watered down version cause I'd cry if I had to march to that. We're doing The Planets/Adagio/The Rite of Spring and it's making me angry.

  • Actually, the trumpet solo and part of the clarinet runs were watered down. Everything else stayed and it's pretty hard to march and play that piece at the same time.

  • I can only imagine.

And all the tempo changes and stuff. Gah.

I'd probably just be like no. Haha.

  • luckily for us, the we have quick holds for tempo changes. This part of the show is actually pretty clean.

  • Robert W. Smith is a angry guy :P I'm in repertoire and played quite of a few of his pieces. Most have some pattern of ff>mp

  • pretty good, a bit messy in places. you needed the woodwinds to come out a bit more in a few places, the basses were covering them a bit to much. The wave of sound is what usually happens to our band when we prefrom too lol. good job!

  • Why isn't the opening solo an oboe?

  • =/ not dynamic enough..... I LOVE ROBERT'S WORK THOUGH

  • Does anyone have just the Alto Sax solo for this?

  • what the heck was that ending about it sounded really sketchy, lol

  • We played this last year in band (the whole Divine Comedy in fact). I had the alto solo (well cued for alto) in this song as well as the other solos in the other movements. The soprano solo in Purgatorio is insane!

  • ...and I sadly ruined it. :P I did it great everytime except for the one that counted!

  • way to much drums, great brass sound

  • Our percussion section forgot their Ritalin as usual.

  • wow. everyone was talking about how much they were going to suck, and out of nowhere they were all intense.. i'm impressed.

  • Awesome! Was better being there. Great performance and direction.

  • it was better when we played it...and it was better with oboe in the beginning :P (or maybe the video just sucks)

  • Yes, but unfortuneatly we have one shy oboe player.

  • we played this song except we used a soprano sax

  • Wow that alto sax solo is impeccable... I bet the chick who plays it is hot.

  • i wouldn't say its impeccable. very good for sure but not impeccable

  • ...it's a joke. That was my solo. But thanks anyway!

  • good shit. daunte would be dead without me
