not the best performance but i must say that was quite epic. the composer is my music industry teacher now, it's cool to be able to hear his compositions like this.
we are preforming this song tonight at my high school's band concert. And this really is a hard peice. I an 1st flute and pic. It is hard but I think our version turned out really well :)
wow. this is REALLY Good. i have to play this song for my highschool band. i play on clarinet 1st part. this song is preety hard. especially those 16th note melodies. check Out My vids.
chill out, not every band has an oboe. when our band was far more spectacular than we were now -- like 3 years ago -- they apparently pulled off with an alto sax just fine.
i played this when i was in the 10th grade (2002) and we played this at festival and walked away with 5 stars...where do i begin as stated before the beginning solo is played by an obeo not clarinet, not hating on clarinets because that was my instrument of chose, horns were too loud and it seemed like a lot of blaring to me. not a good rendition. needs a lot of work.
@sherrieduran i agree it needs some work but the solo was played by an also sax not a clarinet at the beginning the way they did it. you seem to sound like you know alot about music but you cant even tell the instrument for the solo? im not great with music and i could still tell...just saying...
Good God! I could hear phasing throughout the entire song! And if they tuned, I don't think they did a very good job. And usually, the beginning of the song (that was played by the clarinet before the timpani roll at measure 8) is played by an oboe.
The trumpet could use a mute to add more effect it makes it sound way better. This is of my fav. song. you all need more practice but it sounded way better than the ascension
I had that trumpet solo in high school and the part actually calls for a mute. I also played it slower and improved the melody a bit to make it more dramatic.
we're doing this for my school and i play bari sax so my part is decent. no oboe?! awh mann not cool. its a tad our of tune in the beginning. like between the high woodwinds and the trumpets. we're doing this for orchestra.
well.. it's not that bad... the trumpet solo is good.. but heard some mis-pitches... the trombone part at bar 154 (viscous) how come is it so soft? it must be solid... the entry of drum is good as I can feel some musical style... tuba's entry during trombone part (roughly bar 163), how come I didn't hear anything? Anyways your band is generally good... the french horn is strong...
Love this tune!!!!!! Played it with the Irish Youth Wind enseble - it sounds sooo much better with the oboe playing the solo, as written originally. The sax sounds a little weird... But we have a lot more oboes over the ocean here in Europe, I suppose. Than God you guys used the chain and not a shaker like a lot of people do!
Spring Valley High School in Las Vegas played this song for marching band, it was awesome! And by the way the solo at the beggining does sound much better if the oboe plays it.
about four years ago, at band camp, The Music Learning Band wind ensemble played This with an oboe ath the beginning, it sounded really cool. this year the wind ensemble played Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!!
It was orignally composed to have an oboe in the introduction, Most high schools just use a sax in the place because there arn't many oboe players out there. Heard the wind ensemble at interlochen play this, amazing.
james madison university's concert band (who also commissioned this piece when it first came out) is playing this now, and as large as our ensemble is, we do not have an oboe, either. so we had to make due with using our alto sax, just like you guys did. this was pretty good.
I just thought to mention it but something that can really add excitement, is actually our director after the beginning solo gave a tiny cue and the entrance came as quite a surprise, whereas here it was quite obvious haha.
We didn't have an oboe player who could play the part because she was new to the instrument so the alto is cued and that's how we did it.
I know that we played this song a few years back adn had the oboe do it, and yes it is a big difference and sets the mood differently but you have to do what works with the group you have.
just get on with the song darnit....anyway great ,challenging grade 5 piece.timpani and oboe parts rock for this song..and woodwinds always go crazy...
i think that most parts are pretty good, if you have a hard wooden surface for a heavy chain. But you have to admit that most of the song sounds like a special alert on the news
Eh...The reading for the piece WAS a bit long. x.x But maybe my band director is just too ADD to write out long readings.
It's not a horrible performance, but notes could be a LOT clearer. I won't comment on tone or anything, because YouTube tends to distort sound a bit.
We had to play this piece last year(A bit frightening for a freshman flute player to be handed 6 pages of runs and upper register nonsense), and I know it's a bit hellish to get under your fingers.
we're playing that to! but we're in middle school... but we're the best band in maryland! and we always win first place in the hershey park adjudacations alongside other bands!
Good work. But it's a little sloppy. I played this a few years back in a local symphonic band. I'll post the recording if anyone wants to check it out. Don't mean to brag, but it sounds a lot better than this.
The oboe did excellent in this piece. The Ole Brook band just played this piece last night, and they did great. It sounded so real! Almost as if we were going through hades!
this sounds... pretty good, actually. it's a hard piece. my band played this last year at festival. i love this piece, though the french horn part was a nightmare for us rookies, at certain places.
Holy. I really hope it's a watered down version cause I'd cry if I had to march to that. We're doing The Planets/Adagio/The Rite of Spring and it's making me angry.
Actually, the trumpet solo and part of the clarinet runs were watered down. Everything else stayed and it's pretty hard to march and play that piece at the same time.
pretty good, a bit messy in places. you needed the woodwinds to come out a bit more in a few places, the basses were covering them a bit to much. The wave of sound is what usually happens to our band when we prefrom too lol. good job!
We played this last year in band (the whole Divine Comedy in fact). I had the alto solo (well cued for alto) in this song as well as the other solos in the other movements. The soprano solo in Purgatorio is insane!
i play keyboard... fucking difficult, but really fun! lots of block chords. pretty well done.

brought shame to the horn solo =/

inferno doesn't need an intro for christ's sake. The clarenet solo might as well put up a giant neon sign saying welcome to HELL!

But he read it today for us. I hope we don't have to when we actually perform it...But we're playing this song now, and it's so cool.
I got chills when we did the moaning part. Not this time though...lol sorry
