  • I miss Jerry. If we tap our heals together three times can we go back?

  • Give me FIVE!

    Still Alive!

  • woweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • "US Blues" isn't my favorite Dead tune by any means - BUT THIS ONE IS FANTASTIC! Do my eyes deceive me, or was Jerry actually humping the Wolf?

  • Can feel the energy threw my computer speakers!!!!

  • Great rock.

  • Cocaine is one helluva drug

  • Rock and Roll live to the limit. Great song with great guitars, percussions and vocals.

  • WOW jerry !!!!

  • Haha, awesome.

  • This one goes out to - ME! hahaha.

  • Yep late 70s coke induced Dead. Always nice to see Jerry play with energy. It's rare to see him play with THIS much energy from any time period. Sad that within five years Jerry would stand onstage like a statue, the band's energy fed off of Jerry. Though from the dark period 83-85 there are some good performances, it's just seeing it (if it's videoed) or just knowing how bad Jerry was during that period taints it in a way. But there are some stellar shows from his worst depths into H.

  • Knock out song. Jerry in great form.

  • Question: How can anyone "dislike" a Grateful Dead music video?

Even poor video quality is better than none at all!

  • Nice Version...Jerry Smilin' cool

  • 2:44 SCARY JERRY!

  • Does OSAMA HAVE THE U.S BLUES ???

  • @TheYankees2300

    Osama? LMAO!!!

  • wave that flag, Osama's dead!

  • Thank you Duke film school or whomever shot this!

  • Absolutely agree with other comments about coke - love the level of Jerry's energy and ear to ear smiles throughout the show. Check out the windmilling during Truckin' and the energy in Bertha!

  • Encore ?

  • @kocean1 Yes!

  • Raw dead. Jerry with the red shirt on perhaps. Excellent

  • HOLY S H I T !!!! That was freaking awesome. I need to hear the rest of that one. The Grateful Dead are the world's greatest rock and roll band.

  • You know, I love Jerry to death, so to speak, but it is just incredibly sad how many of the comments here are about what kind of drugs he was or was not on at this show.

  • @nlandess Jerry had no qualms about it, neither should you. I am a guitar player and it is completely true that certain drugs will have an impact on how you play.

  • @casualtySR I think you are missing my point here. I play music and am well aware the effect mood-altering substances can have on a performance. But the fact that it is the first thing people associate with a particularly animated performance - as opposed to him perhaps just naturally being in a good mood - is, to me, "incredibly sad." I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade. It just strikes me as regrettable he can't just be very happy, he has to be very high.

  • @nlandess shrug.. judging by all accounts of the time period with the band it's most likely true...a combination of both at least. don't be sad about it though, it is what it is.

  • Most people will never understand this pure expression of power. Damn I feel lucky.

  • rockin

  • Yeah, right, stick w/the coke, Jer, what r u crazy? "the coke" was a huge part of his problem. This is just a look at the guy BEFORE it became a huge problem. It blows my mind that so many of the deadheads out there never even saw this Jerry, the real Jerry Garcia. He had disappeared inside a drug induced shell that allowed him to continue supporting this gigantic jugernaut called the Grateful Dead. He didn't want all his friends to loose their great jobs and rich lives.

  • @blakester1957 Just curious - but where are you getting that info from? One of the biographies or something? I was jsut curious. And what happened when it actually became a huge problem? I hadn't read much about his coke problem, only the heroin, which seems to have become the popular focus and I am suspect about a lot of that mystique (the whole "dude! he went to egypt and smoked persian and became addicted!" etc.).

  • I saw Jerry hundreds of times between 1977 and 1995 and I NEVER saw him do anything like this! Not ever close. Those of you who went to shows know exactly what I'm saying! This is completely and utterly unexpected !

  • Jerry's on some kick ass shit.............

  • 3:15-3:40. WOW! ENERGY BOMB

  • PURE MAGIC : HOT BAND + HI-SO/HI-INTELLECTUAL/HIGH-SPIRITED-CAMERON

CROWD . EAST -COAST -BERKLEY . THESE KIDS KNEW HOW TO PARTY-GRATEFUL-STYLE.THEY KNEW HOW TO ELICIT A RESPONSE FROM GD PLAYERS . A STUDENT BODY W/THE COLLECTIVE INTELLECT OF A MENSA CONVENTION CAN MAKE THINGS MOVE AND SHAKE. THEY GOT THEIR MONEY'S WORTH THIS NIGHT,4SURE. AND LOTS OF REALLY CLEAN DOSE

    AROUND DURHAM/CHAPEL -HILL IN '78-'79. REALLY CLEAN-FUN-UP-STYLE

    DOSE . SHIT ,I'M GETTIN'MISTY . I LOVE THE SCENE , MAN .

  • Jerry seemed like he had a great night. Go Jerr!!

  • Grate rendition...! ;-)

  • I saw the Dead 81 times with Jerry, I was at the show the night before this one at WIlliam & Mary, Trust me, in his life Jerry was never this animated and mobile. There musta been something in the water....

  • I dig this clip a lot! Jerry seems to be having a blast!! Always nice to catch some late 70's dead! I'm not saying that 80's dead isn't bad but jerry seems more energenic during the 70s might be the drugs but whatever diggin the clip! Wish i was there! Totally born in the wrong generation!

  • Why can't people just enjoy the clip, instead of feeding us their bullsh*t opinion about what drugs they might or might not have been on... just dig the clip!

  • Jerry on FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Give me five! I'm still alive! Ain't no luck, I learned to duck!" I hear that... haha.

  • Hot, just all around hot... best US Blues "I've" ever seen. And I've seen a couple of 'em. Wish, actually, I could of seen this show a Duke (didn't start seen them till 85 though, oh well). Just has a great feel to it. They are all going off!

  • Run your,steal your wife!

  • is it just me or is everyone here really on their shit? flawless

never done blow but i imagine this is what its like

  • I am uncle sam, that's who I am!

  • Was there some bet going on as to who could be the bigger Rock Star for the evening? I gotta say, they are gettin' it pretty good there, and then Phil the Orchestra Master directs traffic. Great stuff. Sorry about Donna Jean getting lost in Bobby's bellbottoms.

  • Jumpin' Jerry!!! I play this when my spirits need lifting.

  • It was a helluva show.

  • I'm gonna steal your WIFE!!!! lol....I think that's the cocaine talking ;)

  • An epic leap! Always nice to see a happy and uncharacteristically energetic Jerry Garcia, video has made me smile each time I have watched it.

  • The REAL THING only comes along every so often.

Jerry LIVES. His music keeps him alive in our hearts and minds.

    PEACE

  • I have slightly different take on that... The "do your own thing" model proved to be Jerry's demise. we should have all cared enough to let him or anyone else who is hurting themselves to that degree know of our concern. We ALL basically watched him kill himself slowly. To this day i will not pass up the chance to reach out and help an addict. I miss him too much.....

  • Summer's not the same without Jerry

    RIP

  • wave that flag!!!

  • lyrics, what lyrics?

  • i was at this show. house lights on , we danced we laughed we cried hilarity ensued.

  • I acknowledge the drug use, but it doesn't always have to be about drugs. Sometimes as a performer, you just feel it. The band is FEELING IT and just completely cranked on it on this night. So fun to watch.

  • @pcrowley384 Yeah most definately agree with this statement. It's weird but if I refer to the Dead and drugs it's usually the ones that I was on, or unfortunately discussing the pitfalls of a heavier use....... But I don't think I've really ever said "yeah these guys are high and loving every minute of it", but this was a feel good and FUN performance and one that I haven't seen from them often. They still found a way to amaze me. I'm diehard Panic (R.I.P Mikey) but homage to the masters!

  • Jerry is AMPED! lol!

  • LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE RISE FOR THE PLAYING OF OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM... 0:04

  • Sound on this is amazing! Rocking my comuter speakers! Thanks for posting.

  • Very cool video, first show for me was New Haven Ct May 5,1977, the 77-79 run of GD was the best!!! Thanx fir sharing this, seeing Jer so energenic is almost strange.... the only time I caught him dancing around like that was at the '79 Rochester NY show where he did a "Chuck Berry" stroll across the stage, talk about an incredible nite!!!!

  • no junk no soul. h is a harsh mistress

  • I hightly doubt Jerry was doing much coke in those days you retards.

  • @xKeVyOx Yeah, it's not like any rock bands were doing coke in the late 70s! Don't be silly!

  • @xKeVyOx LOL 78 was like the height of jerry's coke usage get with it man

  • i have never seen jerry move so much

  • you gotta love dancing Jerry!

  • jerry kicks ass

  • Is Jer havin a blast playing this tune....'78 was a good year!

  • My ex went to this show and said she got hit in the head with a frisbee before the show. That's why I checked out the show to see if it was on YouTube. Funny to look back on this. Bob sported a DUKE shirt on an album cover I believe, too. (I am quite sure someone is going to get all Wikipedia like on me and tell me exactly what album cover that was, but what the hey!)

  • @hjp11222003 , At roosevelt stadium I saw a asshole fling a wine bottle into the crowd! I don't know if it got anyone, but I still cringe at the thought of it! Anyway, your ex is a lucky lady if you know what I mean!

  • This is The Dead at their best. They are having fun and tripping their total brains out, The Mothership is going Full Tilt Boogie this night. The best Dead era -75 to 83 or so, before the heroin got to Jerry. Then they had a good run from 87 to 91. I logged in over 30 shows from 82 to 93, so I missed this version of the Dead. Like I have always said, the best and worst music shows I have ever seen were The Dead.

  • I saw 170 shows from '77 to '95 and I never, and I mean never saw Jer come anything close to this!!! I mean the "fist pump" at Hartford in '87 was big news back then! (Check out the Satisfaction from D.C. in July of '86 right before the coma....Jerry comments about Bob DURING the song and the solo that follows are very cool...Also, the Sug. Mag. from Meriweather Post Pav. in '83= very funny stuff!!!!!!!)

  • I have seen over 100 GD shows, cannot recall Jerry ever being this energetic, and if you look at the rest of the guys they are ALL on. This show was exactly one year before I was introduced to the band. Timing is everything i guess.

  • Yeah it sucks becoming a deadhead now because you know you have NO chance of seeing them live. But then again at least all the other guys in the band still tour, it's better than nothing. I'm hoping to see The Dead or Further sometime before I die dammit! BTW def. never seen Jerry move this much and I've been watching lost of Dead clips on youtube. Even in the late 60's, I've never seen footage of Jerry being so animated. This must've been a hot show.

  • enuf dopey drug references...it was like breathing...Mars Hotel was a great American apex for this band

  • Anyone remember those Foxboro shows in July in the mid to late eighties? Hearing this song made it TRULY THE 4TH OF FUCKIN SUMMER !! Steal ya wife baby....steel ya wife

  • @nebnis81 7/4/87...crazy hot, as I recall. One of my favorite times at a show. Not fade away!

  • i really wish i was alive when the dead had shows like this. i became a deadhead about 2 years ago and did not pick it up from my parents. they never went to a dead show when they were younger and it really sucks knowing that i never will either. i would do anything to see one of jerrys jams live. at least phish is around and i can go to those. theyre alot of fun but u cant really compare it to a grateful dead show

  • Superb. I've never seen Jerry move so much. (I was an 80's head)

  • damn i wish i was 18 during these times... this is real music.... name me one group that does this kind of stuff anymore.... the mid 60's to late 70's were the shit if you were there. this is the shit

  • @wtractor024

    one word phish.........

  • true... but still not the "magic" of jerry

  • @wtractor024 Widespread panic.

  • wow, I remember this! I was a junior at Duke in 1978 and attended this concert!

  • f&ck yeah! best ever motha's who don't think so!

  • Jer should have stayed with the coke and laid off the H!!

  • @pjp729 , He should have laid off both! Just think how much better his playing would have gotten if he did! It blows my mind to think about it! Nobody's saying you can't get high, but at least try to be a little more moderate about it! Anyway, I often wonder about that. It's all history now of course.

  • @MrSharkey11 I wish people could just lay off jerry and the way he lived his life christ none of you have contributed 1/1000000 the good he did....and all we do is boo hoo hoo the end sell out 8k plus shows then talk smack....no offense to you sharky just needed a spot to write

  • @Toppersbazaar , That's not exactly true, I think any real person contributes what they can to make a difference to the human condition. In reality it all boils down to service, and nothing but! It's true that jerry gave much of himself in the music that touched all of our lives,he performed a great service to humanity! He laid his soul on the funeral pyre of true art and in the end it consumed him.I think any true person tries to leave some mark of goodness on the world before they are no more

  • @MrSharkey11 i agree with you and me

  • @pjp729 he should have laid off of both, neither did anything good for him, or anyone else for that matter...

  • These guys provided a "defining relationship" for me & it has stuck with me all the years of my life. Thank you Grateful Dead & Gratefulvideo for posting this. This music & memories of those days have kept me going through thick & thin. AND THE MUSIC... JUST ROCKS.

  • Ahhh, gettin my fix of this bad ass version, this reminds me of the Stagger Lee from the Egypt dvd for the boisterous vocals not to mention performance.

  • just watch jerrbear

  • even though Bobby added that bad riff in the song, Jerry makes it shine!!!!

  • ah i was there, three weeks before my youngest was born ,i stood a bit farther back from the stage thinking he wouldnt be as affected by the sound lol hes a death metal musican and composer now, i shoulda known better lol lol

  • My oh My!

  • Must have had some good coke at Duke that spring....

  • @LSDISGOOD4U straight outta B'more. Twenty years later the shit was still following the same path. SO many colleges concentrated in one relatively small triangle that coke becomes a "must have" item.

  • Comment removed

  • @LSDISGOOD4U Dude, i had been thinking the same thing .. then saw this post... it only takes two to confirm the one... ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • helll yeaaah Gracia was out of his mind on this one.

  • Truly a UNIQUE version of U.S. Blues, glad it was caught on video cuz no one would fully believe an accurate description of the boys on-stage antics that night!

My first show was a year later 5/6/79 Broome Cty Arena, Binghampton, NY. It was hotter than a mo-fo inside that place. I was standing right in front of Jerry, he looked awful.. pale, weak, sweating...I really didn't think he was long for this earth. Glad I got 16 good years with the man!

What a difference a year makes!

  • gotta love cameras..esp in the 70's

  • rock out jerry :]

  • my god they are flying just flying

  • Whoa! Best U.S. Blues ever, perhaps? So much added "Umph"! Great stuff!

  • Love Jerry here doing his best Pete Townsend impersonation at 1:25!

  • @bigriverbum: Thanks for the insights. It sure is fun to see the band so energetic. I really like this '78 show at Duke. Its great to have the milky old vid of the show.

  • the reason the boys were so animated and "rocking out" during this song is because the people running the venue were dicks to them. telling them they couldn't play so long, had better not encourage "the pot" smoking and other sh*t. so the band decided they'd try and work the crowd into a frenzy and piss off the promoters. i'd say they did their jobs

  • OMG this is awesome

  • jerry's feeling it....lol

  • Wow, this is one of the best ive seen and listen to, simply awesome. God, i wish i was at this show

  • not to mention this is probably one of the sickest us blues ive ever seen, the whole band is just so animated and on there game, billy poundin on his set like no tomorrow, jerry windmillin, and even jumpin, bobby being bobby, phil with a huge smile, doesnt come better than this

  • well, w/o reading any other comments, this was a big cocaine era for the dead, and jer was flying high durin this one, no doubt, yes high energy as well, but jerrys just so out of control.... rock and roll BAND!! STEAL YO WIFE@@@@ def some coc pre this encore, nevertheless, the grateful dead with or without drugs is the best thing ever to happen with music..

  • hey man thanx for the 4-12-78 post enjoyed watchin them all thanx for sharin'

  • i wish i could find a torrent of this show

  • ma vi amooooooooooo!!!

  • Happy Birthday Jer (a few days early). Love to see this animated Jerry and the windmills.

  • i think the boys were a little boozed up for this one! great energy though!

  • awesome!!

  • LOL JERRRY! YEAH!

  • Jerry Bear forever

  • Man I love these guys!!! They were THE band. Miss Jerry, he was beautiful. The Dead w/o him is like the Beatles w/o John.

  • "The Dead" are allegedly playing tonight at Rothbury...wonder what the encore will be? Sorry boys, but there ain't nothing like the real thing!

  • The Dead at Rothbury 2009 were spectacular beyond belief.. you have no idea what you missed.. & I miss the crap out of Jerry too, but I could go to a show like the Dead's at Rothbury any given day of the week.. They did US Blues as an encore.

  • you missed out on the real thing ,..rothbury was one of those rare nights when it all clicked even without jerry ,..its all about the energy and it was there at rothbury try and find someone who was really there to dispute it

  • happy 4th of july all, from new york new york, sounds so nice I got to say it twice!!!

  • thank you! BIG US ups from charlotte, nc

  • This is so hilarious, what a beaut this guy was. Just a treat to see him having such a blast. If Ralph Kramden had played guitar, this is what it woulda looked like.

  • Nothing beats them ol' U.S. Blues at a live show. Man Jerry was dancing all over this one! "Careful folks, or we'll have to call the fire marshal on ya!" hehehe

  • looks like jerry liked this one

  • Sorry, this is a smoker... no ifs ands or butts. I may be wrong but it seemed to me Jerry was maybe coked up but if he was chasing he didn't have that explosive emotion, but the subtlety. Like radio city dvd, he's toasted but plays such sweet versions whereas here he may be straight or maybe the extra energy is coke but it aint his heroin. Love this version, love 78 more and more.

  • Not that I need to defend myself but it seems I didn't adequately explain my point in the above post. I was responding to the guy below, "bryceschmidt" about the cocaine. I never even thought about it until I read the comment. I watch this video every month or two because it gets me off so much to see his energy and the band just exploding. So read his comment and then read mine and maybe it will make a little more sense, maybe not. It certaintly wasn't even negative.

  • This was on my Mom's 36th bday, and for a change I can look at this & remember where I was at the time...I was 7 yrs old & we were having a Pool party at our house in San Diego, CA. My Mom & Dad were Cops at the time & they were some of the biggest partiers on the planet! LOL This was the night my oldest sis was sippin off everyone's drinks and she ended up pukin on the rug in the hallway. LOL Talk about bein caught! The house wreaked for a week after that! Ahh memories! :)

  • 1:26-1:30 priceless

  • Someone must have slipped Jerry something in his Coke? Isn't this around the time he started speedballing with heroine and speed? Jerry's the gratest!!

  • Every time I watch clips like this of The Dead, I always feel like I'm part of a Freak Brothers comic strip...or R. Crumb.

The '70s were a scruffy time in U.S. history, for sure. ;-)

  • I'M GONNA STEAL YO WIFE!

  • this is the greatest! look at em go! so much energy

  • Clearly before Jerry became a professional at chasing the dragon

  • imagine this being your spring weekend show

  • This song and Grateful Dead make me proud to be an american.

  • Don't agree at all with Scmidtty. I is good to see Jerry with some life, Go watch 1995 if you want sedated Jerry footage

  • Agreed

Coked up or not..........Its cool to see him so animated and having a great time!

    Rock on

  • I don't like this version at all. Jerry's obviously on cocaine or something as others have alluded to. Jerry acting like this seems weird and almost wrong in my opinion, it's not in the spirit of the Grateful Dead or himself. Jerry is a musician, not a Rock Star in the general sense of the word, but he's acting here like all the mainstream rockers of the time that he desperately did NOT want to be. This performance seems like a regression to me; it's almost embarrassing to listen to.

  • eat your words

  • take my word for it jerry was a rock star,...and how many times have u seen captain trips....?

  • What? All I'm saying is that if you compare this performance to other U.S. Blues where Jerry was not coked up, there's a clear difference. I'm not broadly attacking Jerry, I'm attacking his decision to do coke before a show. To ME, it's like someone you really respect and admire (a serious musician) acting like an idiot because his drug use, on this particular night, got a little out of control... I want Jerry's liveliness to go into his music, not into his yelling. And on coke it can't happen.

  • He's not even going "that nuts". I mean can't Jerry have some fun once in awhile? If Pete Townshend acted like this on stage at the same time they woudl have said he was too mellow.

  • bryc I go back to Warlock Days in 1965. Before they changed their name. I'm from SFBay saw him only as we could all the years I did I know I don't have a clue what he took or didn't this night so wonder WHY you THINK you know? Not Spirt of GD? I watched him do a High Steppen Chuck Berry Duck Walk all the way across a flat-bed truck stage in Golden Gate Park 41 years ago for Free & just the Fun of it. This Rocks! How bout he's having a good time?
  • Thank you 6749er

I saw them at the beacon in NYC

rocked so hard his glasses flew cross the stage....

    the whole band was on!!

    MAGIC

  • Loved the MAGIC

    They sure made some

    Good Old Greatful Dead

    Happy Trails Buddy

    From sea to shining sea

  • this is # 1 THE BEST EVER

  • These are real musicians playing real songs. You can't get this kind of stuff anymore.

  • There is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert, period!!!!!

  • Wow...never seen Jerry so into it. Good crowd as well.

  • cocaine anyone..............

  • 74-78 was staple....im 23 and am infatuated with...wtf im such an old soul.

  • man in 15 and im infatuated with them. sucks to be an old soul. every band we like is either broken up or someones died =[

  • Cut a rug Jer!

  • Wow, what a version. 78 rocks.

  • I tried REALLY hard to get a petition going to get THIS song to be the National Anthem for the United States instead of the Star Spankle Banner...

  • yeah it should be.the only good star spangled banner is jimi hendrix's version from woodstock 1969

  • @gtz1975 hahaha i could get down with that

  • I know that Jerry hated Reagan from the first time he ran for Governor, and I know that he was apalled when Reagan emerged almost unscathed from the Iran-Contra scandal.Jerry also voiced opposition to the "Desert Storm" operation. Since everything that the US has subsequently done to Iraq is an outgrowth of Reagan's covert Iran policy, I have little doubt that Garcia would be outraged at the most recent invasion and occupation of Iraq..

  • now the party is starting!!!dffd!!!
