my boss currently was an outside inspector when the barge ignited. the piston in the pump engine pierced the hull into the cargo tanks thus creating a spark because the cargo tanks were empty there were gas vapors remaining in the tanks. if the tanks were full the explosion would of been less severe and contained in certain tanks not what we see in the video. horrible though
Improper maintenance on a pump that was unloading fuel led to a catastrophic failure during the fuel offload. Unfortunately whichever part failed caused a spark, and it all ignited. Company owning the barge was found negligent in not properly maintaining the equipment.
The story I got was that one of the two barge men conducting the discharge fell unconcious unexpectedly allowing one of the pumps to run dry which then sparked and subsequently blew up the rest of the product.
The story you were told is wrong. The Coast Guard report proposed the possibility of improper loading, but there were not enough facts to support the theory.
it wasn't a welder the USCG never released the finding. I knew both guys on the barge, they were almost finished Discharging at exxon when the barge burst into flames... both guys were killed an the barge I rode for years is the one you see in the pic close to the camera
I remember this. It happened just after 9/11(November) and the tri-state area was going crazy thinking it was another attack. The shockwave was felt down by Atlantic City and this happened in Staten Island. 1 of the crewman was from Miami and became a father just prior to the accident.
it actually was feb 21, 2003. pieces of that barge were found 2+ miles away. whats not shown is the Bouchard tug Evening Mist driving through the fire to retrieve the barge B35 next to it.
