the result is extinction, but the means it gets to that point in this video isn't from negative reinforcement. "Negative" refers to the subtraction of a stimulus, and reinforcement refers to the encouragement of a response. What's happening is the opposite on both sides. "Positive" because the object being here are words of seeming interest. Insincerity doesn't come to play until you start speaking about the result (extinction). "Punishment" is when an action is meant to decrease a behavior
@mistysexybabe About whether Daria's mom reaction is a negative reinforcement or not. I don't care what's the correct term anyway, I think it's still true.
We need to see Daria as a single mom trying to making in the workplace. I know she would have some great lines. I can see her with a boyfriend who was an edgy pseudo-intellectuall that now thinks it is cool to go to sports bars or play softball on the weekends.
BF:"Hey Daria wanna go with me to Home Depot"?
Daria:"Do you think I could get a chainsaw, a plastic tarp and some rope"?
BF:"Ah honey, I have all that stuff in the garage".
@Liamitis Me too. I actually fell asleep a lot of times watching this show when I came home from a tiriing day at primary school and sat down to watch TV. When Daria came on at 5:00 I'd fall asleep before I could watch something good at 5:30, lol. Back then I found the show extremely boring and nonsensical. xD
I don't think it is a negative reinforcement. reinforcement increases behavior. and negative means taking something away not giving some additional stimulus. So I would call the situation positive punishment.
@paranormalsun in that sense you're right (absence/presence of reinforcement) but if you think of such reinforcement's content then I'd def label that kind of reinforcement as negative
@paranormalsun The negative: using an empty phrase that displays a lack of interest in the conversation.
The reinforcement: using that same phrase or set of phrases every single time regardless of the content conversation.
This combination suggests to subject "D" that conversation with subject "M" is always meaningless. This would be considered negative reinforcement via intentional neglect on the part of "M"
When speaking of 'reinforcement', you're talking about the principles of behaviour modification. To which paranormalsun is completely correct.
If the observed behaviour is withdrawl (which she described), it is decreasing the likelihood of the target behaviour. Thus the phrase becomes a punishing stimulus for the person.
Positive punishment: the adding of an aversive stimulus that decreases a certain behavior or response.
Negative reinforcement: the taking away of an aversive stimulus that increases a certain behavior or response.
Negative punishment: the taking away of an appetitive stimulus that decreases a certain behavior.
In this case M is withholding an appetitive stimulus (her attention) that increases a withdrawal behavior in D. That is an accurate description. Call it what you like.
Either way, its not negative reinforcement. The M's statement is meant to be a reinforcer of the target behaviour--that is D's increase in positive behaviour towards her mother. However, the lack of attention of M becomes a positive punisher for D causing a decrease in the target behaviour.
@yuumei M's intentions are irrelevant. She intends to give Positive Reinforcement (the adding of an appetitive stimulus to increase a certain behavior or response) She does so poorly a job of this that it becomes transparent to D. What we can be sure of is that this is some kind of Reinforcement because it is increasing D's withdrawal, regardless of anyone's intent. Plain and simple.
@MidskakurUlvur It's not a kind of reinforcement. it's a punishment like I said before because daria have started to avoid the conversation with her mother. And if someone starts to avoid something because of some stimulus we call it a punishment. Do you have anything to do with psychology? I'm studying it and i'm sure its the way I say it is..
@paranormalsun Even in the psychological community, the usefulness of these "differing" terms is debated, so I really don't see the point of arguing it here any further(though I still politely disagree with you based on the information I've read)Even so, it was a fun excuse to read up on the subject. Thank you for the opportunity. For your own gratification I will tell you: I am not involved with psychology. I am in fact a history major with plans to go into archival studies :)
@MidskakurUlvur The "usefulness of these terms" are very clear. I'm not sure what you have "read" but if you picked up a book by BF Skinner, you will know what is correct or not. But I supposed since you are a history major, the point is moot...
@stuffedtater I'll definitely check out the book sometime. When last I checked, the usefulness of these terms were in question specifically because they sometimes over lap, and do not always accurately describe a dynamic. I think it's unlikely that has changed, but you did say that the definition I have been using is wrong, so it's a real possibility. Thanks for your input. Also, there is no point to citing my major for this argument. That's just petty.
@stuffedtater Fair enough.I can understand that kind of generalization, though we all know that being one major does not prevent anyone from studying other subjects.I have studied some psych and taken a couple classes, but it*is*just a hobby for me,along with several other fields which have little to do with history or archival studies. Some of them I know better than others, and my knowledge of psych as a whole is mediocre at best, though I still stand fairly certain of my original assertion.
@otowilchestube We had a disagreement based on conflicting information, so stuffedtater suggested some reading material so that I might better understand his argument.
Haha after taking Psychology I finally get this xDD

@yuumei The wiki:
