I love this song! I find it quite heartbreaking to see his smile in the very beginning of the video though :( he was such an amazing musician. R.I.P Shawn
Unbelievable that Rolling Stone wouldn't even place him on their list of top guitarists. If Kurt Cobain, Jack White, Slash, and Kirk Hammett are better than Shawn, then I'm a 700 year old Asian midget hairdresser with four penises.
@psyoptica The thing is they basically enter the famous ones some of whom most of us are miles better than and some who are actually good. To think about it they never enter any fusion players or jazz players at all do they ? Rolling Stone is just a mainstream piece of junk, the best players often don't make it big but at least they get their respect from fellow musicians and the like :)
@psyoptica lmao. its a shame =( guthrie isn't on there either. but they got the guy from the ramones... please. i mean i like the ramones but for guitar? hah.
when I hear this song it makes me feel like a golden valkyrie eagle god soaring through the heavens with a giant glowing mace and the wing cap from super mario
am i the only 1 here who found out about shawn lane by buying the 189 issue of guitar techniques where he was featured in the fusion section?(it was actually the very first issue of gt i bought)
amazing to finally get a chance to listen to some of his works.
I think the issue here is that people like Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan, if not just guitarists... Lee Ritenour and his friends, Al Jarreau, etc. etc. should deserve more credit and exposure. I mean, people like Justin Bieber, that guy who sang Lollipop, or that "you spin my head right round right round" have talent (ewww I can't believe I said that), but I'd like to see them in the underground scene than on TV. They're producing "swag" over substance, not pure passionate and emotion jerking music.
I seriously do not fucking understand it. At all. How the fuck do all these new age bitches get more famous than people like Shawn Lane? They all sound the same! No melody, drone-y/repetitive lyrics, and some idiot screwing with a DJ system. And possibly the "singer" attempting to play an instrument.
@Thompaam Actually When Shawn was younger he played alot of heavy rock type stuff with various bands. There are some vids when he was 17 of him doing some awesome shredding. Not necessarily metal but shawn pretty much could play anything. and at some point did play everything. He said himself he played pop, rock, blues, and jazz when he was younger too.
@SlayerL66 One of my previous guitarteachers basically said: Give Shawn a month and he could play the living crap out of any genre. I think that's true
@Thompaam That probably is the truth. In the later years of his life Shawn went of to play Indian music as well. So you can tell your friend that Shawn loves the music he plays and could play metal if he wanted to. Besides alot of metal guitarists cite Shawn as an influence.
I love Shawn' music but people who hate on other great guitar players just to play Devils advocate kill me;like stupid people who say stuff like Steve Vai couldn't play this song and comparing etc.etc. are just wads of horse shit.Shawn is great but Vai is where he is because of greatness not lack luster ability;can't they both be great as well as Al di Meola,Alan Holdsworth,Uli Roth???
shred is usually when players just zip through scales such as harmonic minor. scales. shawn lane never did that shit, he mastered jazz and indian classical music among other forms of music. if you want to troll go troll elsewhere. don't disrespect one of the greatest musicians who walked this planet
i hear truth in shredding with holdsworth and gambale and centrifugul funk (or however its spelled) and i say that there are different kinds of shred my friends
This is my first time seeing Lane's work and I'm astounded by how similar him and Buckethead shred, it's no wonder they were such good friends. RIP dude
ill be honest this genre of music hes playing died in the 80's where it belongs... if great guitar players don't seek to branch into multiple genres they will never be a profitable session player nor will they make any meaningful contribution to the continued exploration and debate on how the guitar should be played.
@Dave9309 Wrong. The problem is that You lump him into a class of 80s dudes who had big hair and shredded. You cant hear the difference b/w Shawn and Paul Gilbert or Malmsteen or whoever. There's a huge difference. Shawn played many genres and sounded different all the time. If Miles Davis were alive, I have no doubt he'd say "I want THAT dude." Dont take it from me, search 'Shawn Lane India' and see how dumb your comment was.
@1Eu4ic Well don't blame me if an artist only has one style promoted and 100% of the reviews for him are about his shred. People elevate him to this level of greatness that is completely ignorant of the complexity involved in determining what exactly the correct way to play this new instruments (electric guitar) which has only been around for about 50-100 years is!
@Dave9309 Stop typing words, for the sake of humanity. Shawn Lane isn't even a shredder and the fact that you're grouping him with 80s metal guitarists makes you unbearably ignorant. Plenty of the modern guitar virtuosos (Guthrie Govan, anyone?) acknowledge Shawn Lane as having been in a league of his own. Furthermore, one style? Really? There are videos of him playing indian carnatic music, classical music, jazz, fusion, rock, blues, the list goes on. He was so far from a "shredder"...
@darvocheevy He died because of Psoriatic Arthritis and had to constantly inject himself with steroids to survive and that made him overweight. Besides, any human life is nothing compared to the music he makes.

@souravdodo That's why America's healthcare system is fucked up compared to the UK. And how the hell was he not able to afford health insurance if he was a professional musician
@souravdodo Yeah- but Shawn would have lived comfortably had he lived- he was just beginning to come into his own... Just curious- you said "godly"- what do you know about Shawn in regards to "godliness"? Was he a Christian? Did he walk the walk?
@souravdodo You just need to understand the context. Sean was living with his grandmother, in very poor health, morbidly obese, and did not even own a guitar, or any musical equipment for that matter. I knew his closest friends that saw him as often as anyone did, which wasn't much, he was a recluse. He had lots of offers to do things, but he could not accept offers because he couldn't get around, had no equipment. He was one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar, period.
@souravdodo compare shawn lanes fans to the fans of the artists that you have listed...lane fans are much more die hard and musically aware of his greatness in composing and performing, but its an unfortunate world that we live in were true greats like lane go unrecognized for how great they are...but i do give me hat off to gaga, she has some raw talent
I agree with you, i wouldn't include Rihanna in that bunch though, she atleast has a modicum of talent and byfar the best voice of the 3 you mentioned.
So I read in a Guitar World where Guthrie was teaching shred lessons, so I looked him up. Comments on that page led me here. I think Vai and Satriani are about to be replaced as my idols. It's funny how chance encounters can lead you to amazing places.
@narutorox85 True, great guitar playing does not equal great music. Because anybody can learn great technique, but that's beside the point. What Shawn did was revolutionary, he made every note speak. Whether that note was in the main melody, or in the solo. But if it doesn't speak to you, that's fine. Music is subjective, and always will be. Peace
@narutorox85 You obviously have no sense of melody, harmony or anything even closely related to good music. This is about as colourful and beautiful as music gets.
@lebannerfan65 You can use all the buzzwords you want but if the song doesn't hold my attention or demand a replay then it's not very entertaining or good. Like I said, it's impressive technically but the best songs aren't the best technical songs.
So because the song doesn't hold YOUR attention it isn't very good? You must regard yourself pretty highly. A bit too highly methinks. Opinions are fine. But there's a difference between having an opinion and being a dick.
@ChainsawVsGod Don't patronize me, this is exactly the genre I'm into so if I can tell the song isn't worth listening to it probably isn't. It's basically a bunch of random notes with a lackluster backing track. If you like it then I really don't care; my first post was just asking if I was the only person who didn't like this song because clearly everyone here has a huge Shawn Lane boner.
Well either that or everyone else just loves and respects this legendary musician and his music and you are just a sad little shit who thinks far too much of himself and his musical opinion. That's what I think.
@ChainsawVsGod And now you're resorting to personal insults. I respect him and his guitar playing, all I said was this song is bland and doesn't sound good. You can't deny that all the commentors here are blindly heralding this song as far better than it actually is, then again you probably don't have the self-awareness to realize you're doing it too. I don't have to waste my time with an asshole who can barely string a linear argument together without dishonestly changing tactics at every step.
@ChainsawVsGod And now you're resorting to personal insults. I respect him and his guitar playing, all I said was this song is bland and doesn't sound good. I can't deny that the commentors are blindly heralding this song as far better than it is? Umm, actually I think you'l find that I can. The song is that good. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. Are you really that pompous, that you think that if you think something is bad, everyone else is wrong and you are the only right one? Do you really think that much of yourself? Learn a bit about music. then learn how to present an opinion.
@ChainsawVsGod In any case, didn't you just tell me I have "no sense of melody, harmony, etc." and that "this is about as colourful and beautiful as music gets"? One comment you're telling me I have no idea what makes good music, then I counter that and you switch tactics to "music is subjective herp derp." Obviously you're just throwing bullshit on a wall to see what sticks, which means I'm done here.
i just lost my job and am sorta goin thru rough stuff to come on and play to this song every mornin makes me mfeel like im on top of the world like nothing can stop me or beat me i love his jazz shred fusion his phrasing is so amazing i bubble everyday knowing i can play this song
@charvelgtrs yeah that's why it's so nice :) not everything has to be atonal improvisation or shred metal to be great :D, this sort of music is incredibly uplifting and innocent, let the beauty touch you and put down your guard ;)
Shawn had "the touch". That's all. are very few in the various musical disciplines to possess "the touch". I can think of Art Tatum on the piano, Charlie Parker on sax, Jaco Pastorius on bass and Shawn on guitar indeed. and 'the divine gift that blends technical, speed', feeling and creativity 'at the highest level and all with great lightness and naturalness. and 'nice to see them playing' cause you think you can also do what they do. and instead of 'impossible .... Thx Shawn! You Are The One!
wow..it just goes to show you the power of God he sure knows when to pick the best and wen it is time, Shawn was the guitar hero's hero... the forbidden secret of most whom many would consider great....every bend is in key probably the fastest triplets ever recorded(in this song)...dont know if if anyone can come along and improvise at the speed, articulation and note choice of shawn's I havent heard it since his passing, guthrie , and holdsworth are the closest comparison since..thanks shawn
im a metal guy and came here from a andy james vid, some kid saying this guy blows him away..idk bout that hes alright i prefer andy james more my style of playing
@dmanz007 Andy James is an amazing guitar player, I'm also a metal guy but Shawn blows Andy away. But let's not compare them! They are two completely different styles and both are amazing!
@MikeyboyMovies why compare to vai? at least hes a very proficient musician in his own right , when theres so much shit music around support the artists theyre becoming rarer
@MikeyboyMovies Steve Vai could do this. But then again, Shawn Lane could do Steve Vai... Wouldn't it be cool if Shawn and Steve had done a track together
Hello. Can anyone tell me what this man uses as his distortion and other effects for this particular song? I also noticed that he used the same dist on his other tracks (rules of the game, etc.). Thanks. This man is a god.
First of all Shawn Lane was a Musician, with a capital M, which used his incredible talent to make and create music. That 'the thing most' important of all. At 1 mile per hour or 10,000 miles per hour does not matter .... and all his amazing and unparalleled technical potential, including its TOUCH that I think is the most 'extraordinary ever seen on a keyboard electric guitar, and 'all aimed at generating MUSIC, GREAT, BEAUTIFUL MUSIC! Thanks Shawn!!!
What a tragic story. He was an exceptional talent.
They were trying to manage his condition (Psoriatic Arthritis) with (non-anabolic steroids) but the side-effects destroyed his health and cost him his life.
I've dedicated my life trying to understand the instrument and only really 'get' a fragment of what Shawn was doing. He executed rhythmic ideas so complex, just trying to represent them by banging on a hand drum is a motherfucker. Accomplishing them harmoniously via 6 strings across 26 frets on a guitar? The reason most people don't get Shawn Lane is because he expressed music through the prism of true genius (in the most stringent, classical definition of the word). He exceeds our capacities.
Is 18 NPS just not quite fast enough? Do you really want to ask your brain to try and track 33 NPS? Or 466.6? Really? A friend of mine recently said ( and I wish I had said it first ) - " Always strive for the maximum NPS. That way you are sure to gain the admiration of the incompetent". And he's a keyboardist, not a guitarist. But he probably ( I did not ask - I just laughed really hard ) came up with that after observing comment threads by guitar players.Maybe.I dunno dude, just sayin'.
Shawn's main influences were not guitarists, although he knew and could mimic many great guitarists' styles in an uncanny manner..But his primary influences were some of the greatest pianists, saxophonists, and violinists that have ever lived. He once told me " What I'm doing is not really new, it's just that I'm doing it on the guitar, and that makes it SEEM new". Space precludes listing all those musicians here, but here's another great Shawn quote - " I've listened to a shitload of music".
33 NPS? 466.6 NPS??? Honestly, how do folks come up with this nonsense? OK now,Shawn was clocked at doing 18 NPS (alternate picking) which is faster than... well, pretty much everybody. Add to that the fact that he played extremely advanced musical ideas with one of the most beautiful tones ever conceived of by any Rock guitarist and you end up with something we all can aspire to and probably never attain. But the energizing effect of such a strong inspiration can help one to find one's own way.
all fareri is offering is speed, and shawn lane's offering speed, phrasing, musicality, and virtuosity........its not hard to see who the better musician is
@Doug44393 You'd be surprised at the number of similar comments that come from 100% serious people. Because let's face it, Herman Li has way more fans that Shawn Lane will ever have. So I take these comments all seriously. Sorry for missing your point though.
Nevermind the speed, the note selection and musicality displayed in this video is simply amazing.. Wow and the way this entire group seems to flow into eachother. I was blown away since my first listen :)
This is just so perfect! I've never been more jealous of a single human being.

Kid: Outside, gotta kill some guys.
Mom: But why?! How many are they?
Kid: 36 deaf basterds.
Mom: 36! And you're going alone...
Kid: Nope ma, me and 1866 more.

Am I the only one here who thinks this doesn't sound good at all? Great guitar playing does not equal great music.
narutorox85 4 months ago
@narutorox85 True, great guitar playing does not equal great music. Because anybody can learn great technique, but that's beside the point. What Shawn did was revolutionary, he made every note speak. Whether that note was in the main melody, or in the solo. But if it doesn't speak to you, that's fine. Music is subjective, and always will be. Peace
JackErith 4 months ago
@narutorox85 You obviously have no sense of melody, harmony or anything even closely related to good music. This is about as colourful and beautiful as music gets.
lebannerfan65 4 months ago
@lebannerfan65 You can use all the buzzwords you want but if the song doesn't hold my attention or demand a replay then it's not very entertaining or good. Like I said, it's impressive technically but the best songs aren't the best technical songs.
narutorox85 4 months ago
@narutorox85
So because the song doesn't hold YOUR attention it isn't very good? You must regard yourself pretty highly. A bit too highly methinks. Opinions are fine. But there's a difference between having an opinion and being a dick.
ChainsawVsGod 4 months ago
@ChainsawVsGod Don't patronize me, this is exactly the genre I'm into so if I can tell the song isn't worth listening to it probably isn't. It's basically a bunch of random notes with a lackluster backing track. If you like it then I really don't care; my first post was just asking if I was the only person who didn't like this song because clearly everyone here has a huge Shawn Lane boner.
narutorox85 3 months ago
@narutorox85
Well either that or everyone else just loves and respects this legendary musician and his music and you are just a sad little shit who thinks far too much of himself and his musical opinion. That's what I think.
ChainsawVsGod 3 months ago
@ChainsawVsGod And now you're resorting to personal insults. I respect him and his guitar playing, all I said was this song is bland and doesn't sound good. You can't deny that all the commentors here are blindly heralding this song as far better than it actually is, then again you probably don't have the self-awareness to realize you're doing it too. I don't have to waste my time with an asshole who can barely string a linear argument together without dishonestly changing tactics at every step.

The guitar sounds great, but that background music is super cheesy. The whole song sounds like a theme song for some kind of 80's cartoon.
charvelgtrs 4 months ago
@charvelgtrs yeah that's why it's so nice :) not everything has to be atonal improvisation or shred metal to be great :D, this sort of music is incredibly uplifting and innocent, let the beauty touch you and put down your guard ;)
HamerD 4 months ago
So nice.
doctorich 4 months ago
Shawn had "the touch". That's all. are very few in the various musical disciplines to possess "the touch". I can think of Art Tatum on the piano, Charlie Parker on sax, Jaco Pastorius on bass and Shawn on guitar indeed. and 'the divine gift that blends technical, speed', feeling and creativity 'at the highest level and all with great lightness and naturalness. and 'nice to see them playing' cause you think you can also do what they do. and instead of 'impossible .... Thx Shawn! You Are The One!

Thanks Shawn!!!
aigornoigor 5 months ago
What a tragic story. He was an exceptional talent.
They were trying to manage his condition (Psoriatic Arthritis) with (non-anabolic steroids) but the side-effects destroyed his health and cost him his life.
altroval 5 months ago

But he probably ( I did not ask - I just laughed really hard ) came up with that after observing comment threads by guitar players.Maybe.I dunno dude, just sayin'.
sidwolfband 6 months ago
Shawn's main influences were not guitarists, although he knew and could mimic many great guitarists' styles in an uncanny manner..But his primary influences were some of the greatest pianists, saxophonists, and violinists that have ever lived. He once told me " What I'm doing is not really new, it's just that I'm doing it on the guitar, and that makes it SEEM new". Space precludes listing all those musicians here, but here's another great Shawn quote - " I've listened to a shitload of music".
sidwolfband 6 months ago
