  • Not much to compare across the various versions..different tempo for each one, different key, and in this first one, a different lyric. It wouldn't make much sense comparing anyway because the changes in pop music between 1957 and the 1980s make it like comparing different planets. Mathis is in period style, Simone smashed the paradigm and made a song into a small opera, and Bozo did what he does best, put the stamp on it. All good, just different.

  • What a beautiful song.

  • what a romantic song i like it a lot

  • i love the top comment

  • 56,000 hits ? should be millions thanks 4 video

  • wild is my love for you.

  • The first girl in the picture at 0:30 looks like Jessica Alba.

  • JOHHNY MATHIS IS THE NUMERO UNO OF ROMANTICISM BAR NONE ! GARRY HOLLINGSWORTH, AUSTRALIA,5TH SEPTEMBER 2011.

  • @AmagaiBluWave no no no , even David Bowie , which performed it well , didnt get to the source of Mathys shoes.

  • What a lovely song. Too rushed though. Barbra Streisand did a version of this that is amazing, especially with the last note. She held it in control for almost 8 bars and then just closed her lips and it was done. PERFECTION.

  • One beautiful song, I have seen Johnny in concert 3 times in Seattle, a very addictive voice, I love it! He is fantastic!

  • Track 1 on Side 1 of Johnny Mathis, his first album.

    I think he has potential!!!!!!!!

  • I have always loved this song to the movie with the same name, very romantic movie!!!

    Thanks for posting it..

  • I met my Wife in a Pub and the first thing we spoke about was JOHNNY MATHIS back in 1976. I seen him in concert in the Capital Theatre Cardiff 1975 I think it was and he still tours today and still a great singer.

  • Mathis, ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!

  • Like the leaf clings to the tree....

Oh my darling, cling to me!

  • David Bowie and Nina Simone wipe the floor with this original version.

  • MY favorite beautiful song 1959

  • Naah!

    I guess he's a one hit wonder.

  • @kend16 look up wikipedia for his discography, he is not a one-hit wonder.

  • This is one of the first Mathis discs, and one of the last new 78s, I ever bought.

    It sure brings back memories!

  • holy crap...i was hot in love with someone when this first came out....good lord, i thought i would burst into spontaneous flame when i heard this.

  • A masterwork arranged & produced by the great Ray Ellis, his orchestra & chorus. In those days, Columbia had Ray Ellis, Percy Faith, Don Costa, & Glen Osser. All helped create the Magic Mathis Sound of The 50's & 60's on Columbia.

  • For sheer soul Nina Simone. For sheer majesty Johnny Mathis.

  • Bowies is the best version and you all know it

  • @colinchinsammy NO WAY!!!! Johnny is ORIGINAL...HE OWNS THIS SONG! It was even used in the film by the same name...

  • @colinchinsammy lol bowie compared to Simone and Mathis??

    not in this lifetime..bro.

  • Nocaro, great vid. made me remember when I played this song over and over again. So beautiful you captured the feeling! Happy Christmas BB x

  • Nina Simone's version beats this hands down!

  • nice quality! thnx

  • Best version of this song is Johnny's, without a doubt. Then comes Barbra Streisand's version. Real singers. Period

  • @ocnoreen No no first Nina Simone THAN Johnny's.

  • I have this as a Fontana 78 - one of the last 78s issued in the UK.

The recordings quality was exceptional - better than most vinyl issues of the time.

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG, THE BEST I EVER HEARD BY A SINGER.

  • There's a reason why this song was nominated for an Oscar... :o)

  • One of my favorited JohnnyMathis songs..........

  • johnny mathis is my cousin cool right

  • I get goosebumps just listening to this song - Johnny does such a great job on it. David Bowie also has a fabulous version , recorded in the 80's. They are both fabulous.

  • Theme of the 1957 movie with the same title..............one of my most cherished songs.

  • Ha ha Frankie!!

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever written........

  • I love this song ! Love Johhny Mathis voice!

  • I like the more meditative versions by Simone and Bowie. By comparison, this seems dashed-off. The lyrics deserve to be lingered over. Just my opinion.

  • One of my top JohnnyMathis songs. Thanks for posting.

  • i love this version its the best

  • One of my top favorite Johnny Mathis songs. A classic truly to be always treasured.

  • one of my mom's favorite songs...now one of my favorites too

  • I like each version... With a song this perfect, it's hard to screw it up.

I must confess, however - Nina Simone's interpretation just leaves no doubt that she has full command over the song

  • I have just listened to Nina Simone. While her version has a style of its own, JM's rendition is about as pure as a song could be. The orchestration is also beyond compare.

  • @frankieheartsful

In addition, upon hearing Simone I afforded myself the benefit or research. Simones persona, politic and training in classical piano all contributed to the strengthening of my opinions towards her.

Now, this is subject to change, as I learn more about Mathis, but it is notoriously difficult to re-establish sentimental psychological associations.

  • @frankieheartsful

This creates a holistic endearment that underscores the pure subjectivity of the critique.

Hearing Mathis AFTER THE FACT I cannot exchange those sentiments however, I can establish new ones that will necessarily be secondary to my Simone hearing.

  • @frankieheartsful

    I agree -

For me, it's like listening to two different songs.

I heard Simone's version before I heard Mathis and consequently, what happened psychologically is that I associated emotions with events that were recalled upon listening to Simone.

  • This voice along with a few chosen others are God's gift to those who find beauty in all of His creation.

  • @Emblasail sorry, no one comes close to johnny mathis.

  • any one remembers the movie ?

  • What a movie and this song became my favorite Johnny song forever. I was in High school when I saw it on TV

  • Johnny's original version of this song still gives me chills..Awesome!!! =)

  • good voice but prefer george michael

  • This guy has real potential. I hope he records another song.

  • @frankieheartsful Great line!!!!

  • @frankieheartsful

    Thank you, made me laf.

  • The meloncholy mood of the song is perfectly complimented by the sweeteness of Mathis's vocal tone. A haunting recording that has inspired some wonderful cover versions, most notably the ones by Nina Simone and David Bowie.

  • Great song!! Perfect for Johnny Mathis' rendition. Thanks Nancy for sharing...

  • Beautiful song!

    Wonderful video!

    5*

    nancyfloressantos - thanks for sharing.

  • This was a very popular song when it came out. It was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Song in a motion picture.. I still think this is the best recorded version.

  • .............satisfy this hungriness....you touch me......I hear the sound of mandolin.......you kiss me......and with your kiss the world begins..........you're all things to me......you're life itself..........BEAUTIFUL WORDS...........Thanks for this song.

  • love this version the best

  • me too...Johnny's version ROCKS!!!

  • Beautiful song for lovers! Johnny Mathis' voice is magic!

  • Great song here, it's melody was written by Dimitri Tiomkin and lyrics by Ned Washington. It was used in the 1957 movie soundtrack with the same title. It was played at the end of the movie with airplanes taking off and the running sound of plane motors. This recording here is much better and more complimentary to Johnny, thanks for the upload.
